Homework Tips for Parents
Ways to Minimize Our Nagging and Maximize Their Learning
"Homework time" can be very stressful and full of tension for both child and parent. Research shows doing homework enhances children’s learning and the essential skills they will need to succeed in school and in life such as organization, problem solving, attention span, memory, goal-setting and "stick-to-it-ness" Here’s a few helpful homework tips.
Recognize your role is helper not doer. Don’t provide too much help. Make sure they do the work - not you! Self-esteem is enhanced when we’ve done a job we can be proud of. Offering too much help robs your child of those powerful, "I did it!" moments, when it’s turned into a case of, "Mum did it for me."
Praise efforts and not just the "end product."
Kids needs to learn the importance of hard work and effort and homework provides an opportunity for you to reinforce perseverance. You might start a family motto such as "Never Give Up!" or "Don’t quit until you succeed." Children learn to value effort by our steady emphasis on finishing tasks on time.
Help them get started but insist homework be their responsibility not yours.
By all means help get them started but resist the temptation of always sitting next to them and offer your help only when it’s really needed. If your child is having difficulties, help them understand the work by making up similar tasks and showing them step by step how to do it. Then watch them try to do one on their own. That way you won’t be doing all the work for them. Ask them to show you their completed work at the end of each row or section to ensure they’re following the directions correctly while not relying on you for every detail. Continued on back page..

Parent feedback on the Australian Curriculum
Parents are invited to contribute to DECD’s submission to
ACARA monitoring the Australian Curriculum by participating
in an online survey.
“DECD would like to hear from parents/carers about the
Australian Curriculum so that we can feed into the national
process of curriculum monitoring. This curriculum is used by
Reception to Year 10 teachers to plan what students will learn.
Your opinions will be a valuable contribution to DECD’s
feedback to the national monitoring process. The survey can
be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/
Feedback_Parents_Carers_Aust_Curric. The survey closes on
Friday 7 August.”

Ardtornish Children’s Centre Update
Safety on Local Roads Elizabeth Henson from the Leader Messenger has contacted the Tea Tree Gully Residents and Ratepayers Group Facebook page to enquire about issues of safety on local roads. She is specifically asking if there are issues with Yatala Vale Rd, Fairview Park, Haines Rd, Banksia Park and Crafter St, Fairview Park, in light of TTG Councils proposal to limit the speed of traffic on Yatala Vale Road and investigation of the merit of installing a roundabout at the intersection of Haines and Milne roads, Banksia Park. If there are other road safety concern for families now might be a good time to convey these to her via the page.

Congratulations Ardtornish Angels Grand Final Winners!!!! Last season it was the Ardtornish Angels school netball teams first
season in under 11’s. This means the games were a lot faster and
definitely a lot harder than the girls were used to and they had a
few different rules and skills to learn.
The girls worked hard and grew together as a team. It was a great
surprise when we were told that the girls made the semi-final and
an ever greater surprise when they won the grand final 17 to 12! Congratulations Ardtornish Angels
netball team! Job well done!
Music Showcase Performance Wednesday 2nd September

invited to perform.
If your child learns a musical instrument outside of school hours, and would like to
audition to perform at our music performance, please contact Cathie in the front office
for more information.
Homework Tips Continued….
Section the assignment in smaller chunks so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
Dividing assignments into smaller chunks is often helpful for kids who have difficulty sticking to a task, have shorter attention spans, or are overly concerned with making sure "everything’s right." Then tell your child to do "one chunk at a time" You can even take a short break after completing each chunk. Gradually you can increase the size of the "work chunks" as your child’s confidence increases.
Agree upon specific times for doing homework and then stick to it.
You may want to even post your agreement in a visible place and then sign it. Many kids need a break after school, while others like to delve right in. Find your child’s best work time and consistently reinforce it. Take a close look at homework tasks the day they’re assigned so you can immediately see if they are clear and manageable. If they’re not you might need to talk to your child’s teacher.
Create a good work environment
Make sure your child’s study is free from distractions and is easy for you to monitor. Limit distractions in the home during homework hours, such as noise or interruptions from other siblings. Turn off the TV and radio and if working on the computer, close email and the various chat and social networking sites. Be sure all books, pens and homework resources are within easy reach. Consider placing a couple of motivational posters on the walls in the study area. Adapted from an article by Michele Borba, Ed.D. www.parentingbookmark.com
