Restore Active Desktop Recovery Fix

Active desktop recovery is one of those errors you wish never existed. It’s not a showstopper but definitely annoying. I’ve run across

this issue various times throughout computer tech career. I’m not sure what causes this error but it could be virus or spyware related. It

could also be one of the weird Microsoft errors that happens just because it’s a Microsoft product (you know exactly what I’m talking

about). Normally I would tell you to reboot your computer and try again. Chances are, you’ve already restarted your computer many

times and that’s how you got here.

Below are four different fixes that might help you restore active desktop. You will need to

restart your computer after each fix and see if it resolves your active desktop recovery

error. Please comment whether it resolved your computer issue or not!

Solution #1

1. This is by far the easiest fix if it works!

2. Click the “Restore my Active Desktop” button.

3. Reboot computer

Solution #2

This is probably the easiest fix. Copy and paste the below in notepad and save as fix.vbs on your desktop. Run the file and reboot your

computer!

HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001

strComputer = “.”

Set objReg = GetObject(“winmgmts:\\” & strComputer & “\root\default:StdRegProv”)

strKeyPath = “Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components”

strValue = “0″

ValueName = “DeskHtmlVersion”

objReg.SetDWORDValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue

Solution #3

1. Go to Run, type regedit and hit enter

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ \Desktop\SafeMode\Components

3. Select the value DeskHtmlVersion

4. Select the Decimal radial button

5. Change the value of 272 to 0

6. Most of the time it might take a few seconds for your background to appear and other times…you might need to restart your

computer.

Solution #4

1. Open an explorer window or My Computer

2. Tools

3. Folder Options

4. View

5. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files

6. Now do a search for desktop.htt…it should be on your C: normally

7. Delete any desktop.htt files you find (there could be more than one depending on how many user profiles are on the machine)

They should be located in Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

8. Close all windows you have open

9. Now reboot your PC..Windows will recreate desktop.htt for you and it should work!

occurs. this is perhaps the best advantage of Linux over Windows. in Linux, script errors and virus attacks seldom happen. in

I have been having the same problem for days. I tried the first set of directions removing desktop.htt. This did not work for me and

my other issue is that when this all happened it took off all the liks on my start menu. I don’t have a run link anymore. Does

anyone know how else I could try to fix this issue. I may be beyond fixing it myself and have to bring it to a PC repair man.

Go to “Start” then “Run” …in the box….type regedit and hit Ok

that’s how you access regedit

I would be very careful using it if I were you. If something were to be deleted that shouldn’t be deleted, you’re computer might not

properly work anymore. Just Google it and do some research.

where [username] is the name that you use to sign in with.

I have the same problem. i have been trying everything i know to solve the problem. Originally i thought i had 2 desktop. and i was

trying to find out how to just make it one. Because when i turn on the computer while it’s booting up, i see the desktop with it’s

background, the task bar at the bottom with the necessary buttons, the only thing i don’t see are the icons i have on the desktop.

then i get this other desktop screen comes up with all the icons and a white screen telling me to restore active desktop recovery.

i just tried the first method, nothing happens, i tried the regedit method. i don’t know what to say, i still have the 2 desktop

screens, the first is the same as i describe earlier and the second screen is blue with only the icons in the background. can you

help me. i’ve tried everything.

If you are having problems finding the Desktop.htt file, check:

C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Mine was in there. It was Desktop.htt, not desktop.htt, although I dont think that matters on Windoze.

Okay just writing back to let u know that i downloaded a program called spyware doctor and it cleaned my pc out i had a trojan

called desktop hijacker as soon as the program finished i had my desktop back the spyware program is approved by google…

but the only way to get it for free is to also download a few google programs which so far arent so bad.

regedit (registry editor) worked well for me to eliminate the active desktop recovery problem. Thanks!!!! The DeskHtml file I found

and changed to 0 was located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components and

did not include the safemode folder.

I am having trouble reestablishing my start menu (Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2). Any suggestions??

I have the same issue (active recovery screen, exception error, etc, but with a new twsit – my screen alternates back and forth

between this screen and the jpg image wallpaper I’ve chosen for my destop – it alternates back and forth about every 5 seconds.

Well, after trying to delete desktop.htt, and making the suggested changes to the registry (neither of which worked for me), I

installed and ran Windows Defender – it found 2 “severe” risks, removed them both, an volia, problem solved!

So i created small program to set DeskHtmlVersion to Zero Decimal and you must make it run every time my computer start and

1. Download and extrak the arcive, you will see DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe and you have to make it to run on every time

computer start, so follow next step.

2. Copy DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe to C:\WINDOWS\system32\

3. Type regedit on StartMenu > RUN

4. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

5. Create String Key, give it name DeskHtmlVersionToZero

6. Fill The Value with C:\WINDOWS\system32\DeskHtmlVersionToZero.exe

7. Restart Computer.

8. To Check it, type msconfig on StartMenu > RUN, goto startup tab, you will see DeskHtmlVersionToZero on your startup

program.

9. And Check that Your DeskHtmlVersion Keep in Zero Value.

Hi hI had a problem when trying to uncheck “Hide protected operating files”. The instructions say go to Tools, then Folder

Options, then view. But when I click Tools it doesn’t give me anything that says Folder Options. It only says “Map network drive…”

“Disconnect network drive…” and “Synchronize…” How do I get to folder options?

Well, those registry method only works if i restart my computer, but when my windows 1st starts, those white background always

pop-up…

Since those registry method is automatically activated everytime my windows starts, there is no more those white background…

that virus modified your registry key to hide your folder option menu…

Don’t waste your time to delete dekstop.htt, it’s useless..

try to change DeskHtmlValue to Zero Decimal.

Change the value of DeskHtmlVersion to zero instead of decimal 272.

After doing above change just refreshed & my problem of active desktop recovery got solved.

Is this what I’m looking for, or must it specifically be named “desktop.htt”

2 – go to the file C:\Documents and Settings\#username#\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt and change

the background color

I just replaced that with another users file which was working fine.

Yes fix # 2 worked for me ,,, took me a while to figure out that HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet

Explorer\Desktop\SafeMode\Components

once you find HKEY_CURRENT_USER you click on it,, and scroll until you see the word Software,click on it and scroll and find

the word Microsoft ,, just keep doing that until you get to the last word Components once you click on it then look to the box to your

exertime I close this window out the IE 8 Just reloads and I cant ever close out a session with IE 8 I end up using the task

manager to try to close down the extra pages that then pop up and wind up shutting the whole computer off at the on off switch.

Please help me with this problem before I go MAD!!!

I had the active desktop recovery problem also. I changed the background on my desktop and the white screen and error

Solution number 3 fixed the issue. This error keeps happening time and again. The computer is an old one that runs windows xp

pro with SP3. To make matters worse the computer is in another country so I have to remote it every time. Thanks for the

solution. If you have any idea why it might happen let me know. The computer does not get used for anything but e-mail and

skype calls and a little web surfing.
