Reunion Fauna

In Reunion Island we have many Endemic birds. Let's see two of them.

Some birds are now extinct. Ex: Le Solitaire de Bourbon, a cousin of the Dodo.

This is the Mascarene Petrel.

It always nests on the heights of the island ( Piton des Neiges and Grand Morne).

It usually lives at sea, around the Indian Ocean.

It eats fish.

It is endangered.

This is the Reunion Olive White eye.

Its scientific name is Zosterops olivaceus.

It lives in trees, on the heights of the island.

It eats insects and nectar.

In Reunion Island we have animals that live around the Mascarene Island. Let's see two of them.

This is the Tropic Bird.

Its scientific name is Phaeton Lepturus.

It nests on cliffs next to the sea.

It eats fish.

This is the Humpback Whale.

It usually lives in the Antartic Ocean.

It eats krill and small fish.

It comes around the Mascarene Islands in Winter ( June, July, August, September).

In Reunion Island, we have many exotic animals ( People brought them here).Let's see two of them.

This is the Madagascar Hedgehog.

Its scientific name is Tenrec.

It eats fruits and insects.

It usually lives under bushes and boulders. And sometimes in gardens.

This is the Panther Chameleon.

Its scientific name is Furcifer pardalis.

It lives on trees and in gardens.

It eats insects.
