Dear friends

This month the magazine letter has been written by one of our Elders, Steve Baker. Thank you Steve.

With best wishes for the month ahead.

February is here and I wonder if you have been complaining about the weather? Looking back just a few weeks to the beginning of 2020 the world has already had floods, fire, earthquakes, famine and wars. It makes me so thankful for living in the UK and the February weather. We have been richly blessed with years of peace and a high standard of living.

When I was a little boy I remember my grandmother in the kitchen busy about her tasks softly singing “Count your blessings, count them one by one and it will surprise you what the Lord has done”. It was only as I grew older that I learnt of all the difficulties she had overcome, in the war their house was bombed. All she and her three children managed to salvage were a few bits of furniture and she went through a lot more but still she was singing “count your blessings”.

Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 1 v 12 “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has given me strength.” Paul goes on to tell us something of his background, but he doesn’t tell us at this point of all the trials he went through. He counts his blessings and in verse 14 he writes “The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus”. He shares that he was “the worst of sinners”, and explains that through the example of God saving him others would be able to believe and receive eternal life. He ends with an outpouring of his appreciation for that blessing by addressing God. “To the King eternal. Immortal, invisible the only God be honour and glory for ever and ever”.

The greatest blessing that any of us can count is having a God who is eternal, immortal and invisible yet saves, loves and cares for you and me. May God bless you as you count your many blessings.

THE BIBLE SOCIETY IN CHINA

This item was taken from the Winter 2019

edition of “Word in Action” the newsletter of the

Bible Society. It shows how your donations are

changing people’s lives in China.

Fruit grower Han Xiaoling never went to school as a

child because she had to help out with the family. So

before she attended a scripture literacy class in her

village church, supported by Bible Society, Han could barely read a word. She

crammed into the class with 120 others, and within six months she could

read basic text. The result? She’s been filled with confidence and passion to

share God’s word. ‘There are opportunities everywhere,’ said Han. ‘I want

people to know that all we have comes from God and that they should trust

Him.’ Already her family, her husband’s family and three of her friends have

come to faith in Christ. ‘After learning to read I felt more hopeful, I could

appreciate the message of God for me,’ added Han.

BOYS' BRIGADE

It was good to see the boys again after the Christmas

break. They all enjoyed playing party games and

eating hot dogs and cakes at our Christmas party.

Both sections are continuing their badge work. They

have done some new year puzzles and listened to the bible story

about Moses in the bulrushes followed by a quiz. All the boys are

practising for the International Team Game Competition. There

are six games in total. These will be judged during March.

PRAYER POINTERS FOR FEBRUARY

Our Daytime Prayer Group meet on Monday mornings from 10.00am - 11.00am. All are welcome to join us.

At our Homegroups we pray for each other, for our friends, our church, and for any situations local or worldwide that are on our hearts. If you would like to be part of a homegroup please speak to Jan Sherlock.

During our Sunday morning services Intercessions are led by members of our congregation. If you would like to lead the prayers one Sunday please speak to Jytta James. At our occasional Times of Healing Prayer between the 9.30 am and 11.00 am Sunday Services we pray for those who come for prayer for healing. There is a Prayer Board in the Foyer where you can post requests for Prayer and Thanksgiving which will be brought to our Daytime Prayer Group on a Monday morning. Please feel free to add your prayer requests to the board where we can all see them and join you in prayer. Why not keep this prayer sheet with your Bible

USE THE POWER OF PRAISE

“His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Psalm 34 v 1

You can praise God too little, but you can never praise Him too much.

David writes, ‘From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the

same the Lord’s name is to be praised’ (Psalm 113:3 KJV). ‘Seven

times a day do I praise thee’ (Psalm 119:164 KJV). ‘His praise shall

continually be in my mouth.’

When you are overwhelmed by circumstances, the last thing you feel

like doing is praising God. But it’s the first thing you should do, because

praise gets your attention off yourself and onto God’s miraculous

power. Jehoshaphat faced an army he had no hope of defeating. But

when he started to praise God, his enemies destroyed each other while

he looked on in amazement. When Paul and Silas praised God in

prison, their chains broke and the doors opened. It’s normal to focus on

the problem and forget to praise God, but praise solves problems.

Peter writes: ‘The trial of your faith, being much more precious than of

gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto

praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ’ (1 Peter

1:7 KJV). Start to acknowledge the power of praise and choose to exalt

God regardless of how you feel. Praise brings you into God’s presence

and positions you for His favour and blessing. You say, ‘But I don’t

understand how praise works.’ Think about it like this: you don’t have to

understand aerodynamics in order to fly. You just get on the plane and

the pilot takes you where you need to go. It’s the same when you

praise God – just do it and you’ll get results.

HYTHE HUDDLE

Thanks from Margaret an Age Concern volunteer

I am writing to thank you all for the good work you do in Hythe Huddle. I have brought a man with dementia

along to three of your sessions and they give him such pleasure, that I wanted to make sure that you knew that. Normally he sits alone (apart from his little dog) in his flat in Dibden Purlieu for most of the day. He is partially blind and his hearing is so poor that he can't read or watch TV, so his days are long and lonely.

Events such as yours are a wonderful way for him to connect with the outside world, and give him such pleasure. His dementia means that these occasions are soon forgotten, but the pleasure gained at the time is greatly enjoyed.

Thank you so much for all you do for the people with dementia in this area, and especially for the lovely Christmas party. With appreciation and many thanks.

BLACKFIELD BUBBLE

We are also greatly in need of more volunteers for our Blackfield Bubble, which is a similar group for people with dementia based in the Jubilee Hall, Fawley on Tuesday afternoons once a month. If anyone could help just to make cups of tea and chat to the old people, it would be much appreciated.

A HISTORY OF SIERRA LEONE by Maggie Troman

Steve Baker and his team are visiting Sierra Leone from 17 th January to 4th February this year. The following background information will help you to understand their work and the problems they face.

Because of its natural resources which are diamonds, gold and other minerals there has always been a problem with sourcing and production. It could provide work and stability in the country if properly managed.

The country was founded in 1797 to provide a home for freed slaves from the deep south of America. Violence with its neighbour Liberia caused guerrilla warfare for many years until 2002 when democracy took hold. Since then there have been peaceful elections but there is a lot of poverty in the countryside and national management of the country is not good.

There is freedom of religion but Islam increases in influence and the power of the occult is still strong especially in the countryside. Christian ministries in areas of the countryside and in Freetown are helping to set standards and providing infra structure in practical ways as we are doing with the wells in the area of Kafanta in the north.

There is much to be done for the older generation who lived through the civil war and many were displaced as a result. The teaching of Christianity has taken hold in many parts of the country including Freetown the capital. It was one of the first countries in Africa to be evangelised. Corruption is a serious problem at all levels and food security is another major issue. Most people survive on a dollar a day which is about £1.50. Life expectancy is 47-years and the mortality rate is one of the highest in the world.

Churches must be places where compassion, forgiveness and healing take place. There is a need for pastors to be biblically trained and given leadership advice so that standards are kept and bibles in their language are provided and we are doing this in the area we visit .Many pastors do not have a secondary education which makes the teaching difficult. The last visit and the conference proved successful and hopefully this one will be just as valuable to those who come.

Ninety-year-old Ma Wen is full of joy. After

25 years of following Jesus, she’s received her

first Bible. Ma Wen got up at 3.00 am to travel

to a rural church with her daughter when she

heard that Bibles were being distributed. She

was one of many who raised her hand to

request a Bible. Ma Wen said, ‘The Bible is

very precious to me. When I became a

Christian I could not read, but I have learned more and more words.’

She wept as she recalled the verse that speaks to her most – ‘where it

says Jesus was crucified for my sins.’ And Ma Wen had a message for

people like you, who helped to put the Bible into her hands: ‘I want to

thank you a thousand times because you are so generous. I am so

happy and thankful to have a Bible today.’

MY VISIT TO GEORGIA

A message from Julia Cross Last March I went on a conference to Georgia (ex USSR) for persecuted Christians from neighbouring Azerbaijan. It was an amazing time which I was able to share with the Women’s Guild group later in the year, and appreciate your prayers.

This year I am planning to go to Georgia again from March 23rd to 30th and would value your prayers for the conference. I will be leading the children's work for children from families who have recently become Christians from a Muslim/atheistic background, and have very little idea about what being a Christian and living the Christian life involves. Some of their parents have suffered imprisonment, loss of their jobs, fines and even death for their faith. They always know that the secret police are watching them and could arrest them at any time for holding Christian meetings in Azerbaijan.

Please pray for our safety and for the encouragement and protection of the believers there and their children, who live in such a hostile environment. Azerbaijan is currently number 50 on the Open Doors Worldwatch list of countries where there is persecution of Christians. Here is some information from Open Doors on Azerbaijan:

Why are Christians persecuted in Azerbaijan? (The picture shows Azeri Children)

Azeri Christians are considered traitors, betraying not only Islam but also their country. There are about 10,000 Azeri

converts from Islam. They speak a language similar to Turkish, and live between Turkey and Iran.

Most of the persecution of Christians in Azerbaijan comes from government officials at various levels - no religious activities beyond state-run and state-controlled institutions are allowed.

What is life like for Christians in Azerbaijan?

Since 1991, when the country gained independence from the former Soviet Union, all churches have been obliged to re-register at least six times, with fewer congregations managing to pass each time.

Unregistered churches face the constant threat of raids, confiscations and fines. Arrests and beatings occur on a very regular basis. Fear that churches have been infiltrated by informers means that no one knows whom to trust.

Those who are known to be Christians have difficulty in finding a job. Christians from Muslim backgrounds bear the brunt of persecution, both at the hands of the state and from friends and family. They need our prayers and encouragement.

Thanks from Jeanette Allen "I want to thank the folk at Cornerstone for the care and support I have received since Ken first went into a care home. We, as a family, also want to say thank you to everyone who came to the Thanksgiving Service for Ken, to George Gibson for leading a wonderful service and to Kirsty for the lovely music. Behind the scenes the church was made ready and the room prepared for the wake. Everyone who came to the Thanksgiving Service were impressed by the warm welcome they received. Lots of folk who do not come to church loved the whole atmosphere of the occasion. Thank you.”

TRIBUTE TO KEN ALLEN

Ken was born 92 years ago in Back Lane, Berkhamstead and was the youngest of four children. His father died when Ken was two which was a great sadness to him in later life. Times were very hard for his mother Annie

although there were happy times with Life Boys holidays in Dovercourt. His interests at school were art and sport which he was good at and continued into adult life, winning trophies for football, cricket, tennis and badminton.

When WW11 broke out he volunteered to do his bit and worked away from home on a farm until he was able to join the army in the Parachute Regiment, which at 18 was a great adventure. After the war he worked for the G.P.O. which later became British Telecom, firstly digging pole holes but ending his career as Manager for the Bedford Area. He married Audrey in 1945 and they had six children.

Following the death of Audrey in 1986 Ken met Jeannette and they married in this church in 1989. They lived happily on the Isle-of-Wight for 25 years but decided to move to Hythe where Jeannette renewed her membership. After a while Ken started to come to church with her and Cornerstone came to mean a lot to him saying how nice it was that folk greeted him with a smile and talked to him.

Norma Turner (Open Doors) says: “Thank you very much for the flowers left on my doorstep on 13th January. I was in, but never heard the doorbell, but I found them when the nurse came. It was a surprise when I had a stroke on 14th December and was taken into hospital where I stayed for over two weeks, so I missed all of Christmas, but I was taken to the church service on Christmas day in a wheel chair where there were only nine of us in beds or chairs but it was very nice. I'm getting on OK but it will take time. Once again thank you so much.”
