Revelations The fortnightly newsletter for PreK to Year 12 families of St Paul’s Revelations - St Paul’s Fortnightly Newsletter. Issue No. 08 1 Issue No. 08 28 July, 2017 Welcome back to the start of a new term. As per usual we can expect another action filled term at St Paul’s. It has been wonderful to welcome a number of families to the school this term both in the junior and secondary schools. We also have a number of exchange students with us this term from France and Germany who really add value to our school community. As you are aware Glenda Clapin our Director of Policy and Compliance retired over the holidays. As a consequence of this, Monique Joines who has been responsible for daily organisation, is now responsible for the bulk of Glenda’s role description. We have also appointed Brenda Bennett as our school nurse in a part time position. Brenda will be overseeing all the medical services at the school. I am very excited about the commencement of construction of the new canteen and café facility. We are so grateful to those families who have contributed generously for this important new project. We are currently organising the fit out aspects of this project. If you are able to assist the school in this area particularly in kitchen fit outs, supply of equipment or even landscape design please contact me directly to discuss any possibilities. The secondary school is planning a musical in June next year, which hopefully will be the start of an ongoing tradition at St Paul’s. After much deliberation, I am pleased that the production team has selected the show Crazy for You. I believe this choice will really showcase the strengths of our students and be a wonderfully fun and uplifting show. Musicals are hugely beneficial to the engagement of students, staff and parents and bring much value to a school community. I am so grateful to the team of staff who have committed to this production and look forward to opening night. The start of this term also saw the start of another Pre K class due to the increased demand for places. This is a tribute to the exceptional work of our fantastic Pre K staff who create such a positive, interactive and dynamic learning environment. As a result of this new class commencing there are now some places available, feel free to share this news with your friends and neighbours who may be interested. The next Friends of St Paul’s meeting is on Tuesday evening the 15th August. This is a great group in which to be involved and a wonderful way to make connections with our parents and staff. We look forward to their next planned event, which is ‘Cinema Under the Stars’ on Friday 15th September. Hope you can take part. Thank you for your continued support of our school. A year has passed since we were in the place of Emma and Steven about to come up on stage and do our inaugural speech In that speech we reflected upon what we believed school is really about how it needs to be a place where we feel a sense of belonging and safety and a place that we feel joy I hope that for everyone here today that that is indeed how you feel at St Paulrsquos and I hope that the outgoing 201617 leadership team has helped you in that

So far this term almost every teacher that I have run into in the corridor or seen in class has asked me something along the lines of ldquohow does it feel not to be school captain anymorerdquo ndash Well herersquos my answer ndash itrsquos really sad I think that anyone who has spent any time with me over the past year knows just how much I have loved this role the experiences that I have been able to have were amazing and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity

Next there are a few major thank yoursquos that we need to give First and foremost to the most amazing talented and dedicated group of senior leaders thank you for your outstanding commitment to the St Paulrsquos community It has been such an enormous pleasure to be a part of our leadership team itrsquos really been you guys that have been the heart and soul of it Thank you for all the time and effort that you have put in especially when it meant sacrificing your own time or a slightly late IA submission I hope that you have all enjoyed the past year as much as Meredith and I have we have made so many amazing memories together and without being too lame there are no words to describe the depth of gratitude that we feel for you all So to our fellow leaders our friends thank you

Matthew and I would like to especially thank Jessie and Alhassen you guys have been so amazing and you never fail to go above and beyond in both helping and supporting us and organising and serving independently I donrsquot know about you guys but I personally think its pretty impressive how much the four of us managed to organise together during biology lessons ndash Sorry Miss Newby

We also of course must thank Mr Wake You have been an outstanding role model for the team especially Meredith and I Your incredible leadership of this school has been a huge inspiration to us your willingness to sacrifice your own time and comfort to benefit the school community is a true display of servant leadership We are incredibly grateful for your eagerness to listen to our ideas and feedback and for the all-round devotion that you give to St Paulrsquos

The next thank you is to Mrs Keogh Your door has always been open for us and we are so grateful and thankful for the kindness that you always show You were also the driving force behind everything thatrsquos happened with the Student Wellbeing Project including the page on mystpauls You have always been incredibly willing and eager to listen to our ideas and you sacrificed so much of your own time to help them become real

We also need to take a moment to thank Mrs Whale While you work mainly behind the scenes your immense commitment and dedication to the school is what seems to keep it running sometimes The continuous sacrifices that you make for this school cannot possibly be overstated Wersquore also incredibly thankful for the kindness that yoursquove shown to us always eager to help out give us a smile and share a few kind words of thanks

First and foremost to the most amazing talented and dedicated group of senior leaders thank you for your outstanding commitment to the St Paulrsquos community It has been such an

enormous pleasure to be a part of our leadership team itrsquos really been you guys that have been the

heart and soul of it

Therersquos also some really important people that I would like to thank firstly Mr Heath You know yoursquore going to miss me barging into your office unannounced with some kind of question or something to tell you But even though I do seem to be in your office more often than I am not you have never not been helpful even when it comes to answering my extremely stupid questions you always did your best to answer them and you were always there to help me through this entire experience so thank you

Irsquod also like to thank another person who is not doubt sick of seeing my face floating around her office Mrs Ash Thank you so much for every time yoursquove loaned me your keys to get into a classroom thanks for all the amazing chats wersquove had whilst serving coffee at parent teacher interviews thank you for always not only putting up with my incessant questions but also thanks for answering them I can honestly say I would have struggled so much in this role if it wasnrsquot for you so thank you

And finally even though shersquos not here today Miss Paragalli deserves the biggest of thanks The amount of emails shersquos received from me is ridiculous and I could never thank her enough for the guidance shersquos given me and the fun times wersquove shared So thanks to Miss Paragalli

201617 School Captains Farewell Speech

Revelations - St Paulrsquos Fortnightly Newsletter Issue No 08 5

Matthew thank you to MeredithBefore we finish Irsquod like to take a moment to thank Meredith for being such an amazing person over the past year Together we done have countless speeches helped at numerous school events attended a bunch of community functions and I can honestly say that I wouldnrsquot have been able to do any of it without you by my side Your dedication and commitment to the team and to helping St Paulrsquos has truly been my biggest inspiration Every time I panicked because Irsquod realized that something hadnrsquot been done you always had it covered You were always there to support me in my ideas and my opinions and I must say that I wouldnrsquot have even been able to attend more than half of the events that wersquove done if you werenrsquot able and willing to drive me

So thank you Meredith for your never-ending enthusiasm dedication commitment and kindness I know that Irsquove got the support of the rest of the team when I say that yoursquore literally one of the main reasons that we made it to the end Itrsquos been such a pleasure working with you

Meredith Thank you to MatthewIrsquom sure you all will have no trouble believing me when I say that Matthew was the absolute best co-captain that I could have ever asked for Matthew you are smart and you are kind and you are caring and you are by far the most compassionate person that I have ever met The amount of heart that you have put into this role amazes me and please believe me when I say that all your work has honestly paid off in the way you have lead this school I have had the privilege of growing with you over the past year and I am truly truly blessed to have you as a friend

Address to all Incoming Leaders Now addressing all of the incoming leaders directly In terms of advice I think that all I can really say is to be yourself which is something that you have probably heard a thousand times before but that makes it no less true Donrsquot be afraid to be unique because from that uniqueness grows new and innovative ideas that will help you enact positive change and make a true difference There will also be times over the next year when you will be trying to handle a lot at once especially seeing that you are undertaking senior study As Shawn Mendes sung ldquoSometimes it all gets a little too muchrdquo Remember that yoursquore part of a team ndash be there for each other because there will definitely be times when you feel overwhelmed and stressed and when you do just remember that there are always people there to help you including your fellow leaders Miss Sharpe and Mr Heath and yoursquore always welcome to ask one of the outgoing leaders for their advice

The best advice that I can give you and the advice that I really hope that you guys follow is to please honestly love this position you guys have been blessed with an amazing opportunity and my prayer for you is that you will seize it But finally I would like to pass on the wonderful advice that Jack McNamara gave to me

when I was in your position one year ago enjoy the food And now seeing that any farewell speech wouldnrsquot be complete with its share of lame quotes Meredith and I will leave you with two of our favourites

ldquoDo more than belong participate Do more than care help Do more than believe practice Do more than be fair be kind Do more than forgive forget Do more than dream workrdquo William Arthur Ward

Oh the places yoursquoll go today is your day Your mountain is waiting So get on your way Dr Seuss

Matthew Thomas amp Meredith ColagiuriSchool Captains 201617

Remember that yoursquore part of a team ndash be there for each other because there will definitely be

times when you feel overwhelmed and stressed and when you do just remember that there are

always people there to help you

Welcome back to Term 3At the end of last term I wrote thanking the outstanding contribution of our outgoing Senior Leadership team This term has seen the lsquochanging of the guardrsquo with the induction of our new senior prefects taking place last Friday morning in the Centre

The induction is a significant event on the school calendar The ceremony formally thanks and acknowledges our outgoing prefects in front of the entire High School as well as providing the opportunity for our school captains to reflect on the previous year For our incoming prefects the event is also significant as a representative group of the team make public pledges in the forms of oaths These oaths outline both what the prefects will seek to in their service of the school and the way in which they will seek to do so in terms of their approach and character In this way such public declarations serve as a form of accountability for our incoming prefects

I would like to commend the entire Leadership Team for 20172018 They are an outstanding group of young women and men who I know will do an admirable job of filling the large shoes that our outgoing team leave behind I am very much looking forward to working with the leaders (as listed to the right) over the next twelve months

The other major happening since the last edition of Revelations was conducting our second ever Combined House Day This took place on the final day of term 2 in order to raise funds for our school supported charity Congo Aid This day is the initiative of our 6 heads of House Mrs Newton (Cornwallis) Mrs Stacker (Castlereagh) Mr Smith (Wilberforce) Mr Jeffery (Melville) Mrs Cullimore (Claremont) and Mr Linfoot (Strathdon) who put together a great day of activities in partnership with our Senior Prefect team It was really pleasing to see this yearrsquos prefects build on the involvement of last yearrsquos prefects with their increased involvement and greater sense of ownership

There is always an element of apprehension involved in holding something for the second time especially when it was such a raging success the first time I am pleased to report that the day exceeded all expectations Our students were overwhelming in their support of all the activities conducted both the fundraising and non-fundraising elements to the day The enthusiasm for the morningrsquos activities of Mini Olympics Mario Kart challenge and Family Feud was contagious This continued into the recess cake stall and lunch time Hot Dog stand The teacher auction

was yet again a spectacular success with students often banding together to lsquopurchasersquo their preferred lots The day culminated in the lsquoSt Paulrsquos Has Got Talentrsquo talent quest A wide variety of acts was showcased and it was wonderful to see how supportive our students were of their peers who were up on stage In terms of the financial support for Congo Aid an amazing amount of almost $6000 was raised This was phenomenal effort and very much indicative of the generosity and selflessness of our students My thanks to the Heads of House our outgoing prefects and our staff for their supervision and encouragement on the day which all combined to make the day a wonderful success

Personalised Learning for St PaulrsquosNext week our Year 10 students submit subject choice forms for Year 11 2018 This is the next step in a process of course and subject selection which began in mid-Term Two with a student survey of career suggestions information evening individual student interviews with senior executive to provide advice and answer questions regarding subjects and career options During the term break each Year 10 student received a report on their progress which was followed by parent-teacher interviews this week

Student subject selection forms are carefully processed beginning the journey to commence the construction of the High School timetable for 2018 Timetables at St Paulrsquos are built around student gifts abilities and choices unlike many schools which ask students to choose from pre-determined lines that suit school structures The St Paulrsquos approach results in personalised timetables and subject choices for each student with the goal being to provide each student with the opportunity to bring out their best

Next week we begin a similar process for Year 8 students with an Information evening on Wednesday led by the Coordinator of Middle Yearrsquos Programmes Dr Robyn as she leads the presentation regarding elective choices open to Year 9 students in 2018 The school offers a comprehensive range of electives and employs the same process of development of individualised patterns of study for our Year 9 (and 10) students Students in Years 7 and 8 have a set pattern of study designed to expose them to a range of elective options in addition to the mandatory subjects that are required to be taught throughout the curriculum

If you have any feedback on these items please contact me

Library LookoutWe thought that wersquod devote this edition of Revelations to wide reading particularly with the announcement of the Childrenrsquos Book Council of Australiarsquos announcement of the Book of the Year on Friday August 18 2017 There are five categories Older Readers Younger Readers Picture Book Early Childhood and Information Books If you would like further information about the awards then we suggest you use this link - wwwcbcaorgau

For now though wersquoll just focus on the Shortlisted books for Older Readers

The Bone SparrowZana FraillonThis is a rather confronting read that gives an insight into the lives of detainees in refugee camps The trials and tribulations of Subhi are heart wrenching and the relationship between him and Jimmie (someone from the outside that is dealing with her own issues of abandonment) as they both find a shared healing process is powerful This is an engaging read much like The Boy in Striped Pyjamas but in an Australian context Therersquos a tension between trying to live out your dreams and trying to live in incarceration and balancing the two Perhaps the only way to truly escape is to escape through your imagination Mr Balbi

Frankie Shivaun PlozzaThe attraction here is that the novel is set in Melbourne Another attraction is the influence of a migrant background Perhaps the most important attraction is the way Frankie eventually deals with her anger and grows up Frankie is an angry girlhellip a very angry girl who is dealing with a mother who abandoned her and a just found step brother Frankie can be annoying at times and you do want to tell her to get over it but isnt that the value of literature - a powerful character that evokes a wide range of emotions in youMr Balbi

From the Humanities Department

Liveable Solutions for our SchoolThroughout Term Two the students in Year Seven White received the pleasure of being able to redesign a certain area of our school Recently Year Seven has been studying liveability the factors and crucial aspects that influence how liveable a certain area city or country is Therefore we all had extensive knowledge on this subject and were able to apply it to our designs

Our task was to individually create an area that would be a comfortable place for students to relax study and enjoy themselves With valuable help from our teachers Mr Ingold and Mrs McDonald we set to work

To start the process we studied our school as it is currently by looking at aerial images and drawing a sketch map of it We then took our sketch maps outside and walked around our school as a class whilst adding details to them and pointing out key features that make our school liveable We reached the area between L Block and J Block this was our designated area which we were to redesign Collectively as a class we sat down and surveyed the area closely we discussed various ways that we could change the area We even named it ldquoThe In-betweenrdquo

We all had various splendid and slightly odd ideas We know that the amazing staff at our school care immensely about the comfort of their students so we were able to design the new area from a studentrsquos perspective

Greenery is a beautiful sight and food tech is always needing vegetables so we discussed incorporating a couple of vegetable gardens Not only would the food technology teachers appreciate this new feature but students could put their farming skills to the test and learn how to care for a garden which is always a valuable asset

During the intense heat of summer everyone students and teachers alike line up for a drink at the bubbler and there is nothing more infuriating than having to line up for ages to get a drink To prevent this we included chilled water fountains in the new area A couple of water fountains would be sufficient for all of the thirsty students

Over the next few lessons of geography we put our inventive imaginations to work with help from Mr Ingold and Mrs McDonald Approximately halfway through the process we were told that our beloved principal Mr Wake may even look at some of our designs and consider our ideas We all continued our designs with renewed vigour and effort

When we had all finished our designs we decided to write to Mr Wake telling him about what we had include in our designs why we thought the area should be edited and how so Mr Wake was extremely attentive and considerate he even took time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about our ideas and give us his opinions about them

Getting feedback about what we had created was marvellous and knowing that someone as important as Mr Wake actually

cares about our opinions and is even considering including them in the future design for the school is amazing We all worked really hard to design an area that students would use and enjoy hearing that he wanted to use some aspects of our designs in the future plan of the school was one of the best things that we had heard all day

The plans for what the school could look like in the future were extremely interesting to hear about and we feel privileged that we were able to see them and be included in the vision for the school
