bringing film back to the southside

2012 FestivalThe 2012 festival picked up where it left off with a varied programme of films for a diverse Southside audience - archive, shorts, features, animation, documentaries, artists work, talks and workshops. We had approximately 850 attendees at 29 events held in 14 venues over the 4 days of the festival.

Our film and music strand SouthXSouthside returned with a screening of Ballads of the Book and we closed the festival with Buster Keaton’s The General featuring the mighty Wurtlizer Organ at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall.

Once again we showcased work by Southside directors, writers and producers plus films shot in the Southside by screening recent features Fast Romance, Silver Tongues and NEDS as well as the classic, Comfort and Joy. We were delighted to have the director of NEDS, Peter Mullan attend the screening which was the opening film of the festival and even more pleased when he provided an impromptu Q&A afterwards

The Southside Film Festival is about more than just the films and this year we had our first exhibition at Southside Studios, our first kids animation workshop, our first Film Quiz and our first Script Surgery. As well as our first cinema architecture talk on the cinemas of the Southside and we used every available space across the Southside for ‘pop up’ cinemas so you couldn’t miss us!

Supporting Southside Filmmakers We continue to support new and emerging Southside filmmakers and the winner of the 2012 Best Southside Film Award was Mark Mcluskey with his film Fur and Loathing.

Fur and Loathing (13') took us inside the lives and minds of the people who for a few hours a week lives their lives as the mascots of the teams they support. We literally got under the skin of mascot life and were taken on a journey inside the hot, sweaty suit ourselves to see life through the eyes of someone looking through the eye holes of a furry bear head.

Unique VenuesWhat makes the Southside Film Festival unique is the fact that there is no cinema in the Southside so the festival screening venues were pubs, clubs, halls, artist studios and other community venues which meant Southsiders were able to see films not only on their door step but in places where they least expected it.

Attending a talk, workshop or film during the Southside Film Festival was a unique experience. The venues for the 2012 festival also included a Scout hall, boatshed, swimming baths and libraries.

Press“It's small, it's intimate (especially in the boathouse) but it's also a way of bringing a neighbourhood together. You like to imagine this is how Tribeca or Sundance started out. And if nothing else, it's a nice way to meet the neighbours.”Pauline McLean, BBC Scotland arts correspondent

“Southside Film Festival returns for a second year to provide an oasis of film to an area of Glasgow that's starved of the moving image for much of the year”Jamie Dunn, the Skinny
