The process leading into your final GCSE exams

Dear Student,

This booklet is designed to help you and your Parents / Carers prepare in the best and most effective way possible for your end of Year 10 mock and final GCSE exams. Your teachers have provided the information you will find in this booklet and it will hopefully be helpful in giving you all the information you require to stay on top of your learning and enable you to get the best grades possible. When you started your course after May half term in Year 9 you had 76 weeks of study. This works out at;

304 English lessons (8 every 2 weeks)

304 Maths lessons (8 every 2 weeks)

190 option subject lessons (5 every 2 weeks)

This sounds a lot but when you consider that we are roughly half way through your courses there were approximately 41 weeks left on the evening you received this booklet. That works out at;

168 English lessons

168 Maths lessons

105 option subject lessons

Time is passing quickly and it is important with the new style of exams that you prepare as fully for these examinations as possible. You will sit end of Year 10 exams during June and July. This is your opportunity to showcase how much you have learnt but more importantly it provides you and your teachers with an accurate update on how much of the content you learnt in Year 10 has been retained. This then means that teachers can prepare appropriately to help you in any areas you have struggled with. There are some general tips which would help you moving forward;

Be fully prepared for every lesson

Make revision cards or mind maps after each lesson

Keep trying and if you really struggle speak up and ask for help

Good luck with your exams, Harlington Upper School The remainder of this booklet will give you subject specific information, cover the exam preparation sessions you have had in school with Elevate and provide you with some useful general advice on revision.

Exam preparation

Expectations leading into assessments/exams Changing landscape

The new courses, in the majority, are based solely on terminal exams which are longer and more

difficult. Student performance in exams is more important than ever so it is a priority that students

have the skills to successfully complete these more challenging papers.

This process needs to begin as early as possible. Work is being done with our feeder schools to

allow the skills required to be introduced during Years 7 and 8.

Students are currently receiving guidance on how this can be done through Elevate workshops and

follow up sessions in their values lessons. These sessions have been well received and student

feedback is very positive.

Parents / Carers are also very keen to help and ensure that students prepare for assessments. At

present they do not always have the information needed to support students at home.

The following timeline shows the process Harlington Upper will follow in addressing the concerns which

are coming out of the changing landscape. Timeline

When Action

Beginning of course Individual course specifications placed onto website.

Order revision guides (where available) for students to purchase/use during the duration of the course.

Parents made aware of specifications and that revision guides are available and will be sold throughout the year including at parents’ evenings.

4 weeks prior to any progress check period

List of revision topics will be given to students in class and/or added to Show My Homework.

Leading into a classroom assessment

List of revision topics given to students and added to Show My Homework. (Teacher discretion on time period).

Opportunities for students to create materials in consolidation lessons, which can be useful for revision.

Leading into GCSE final exams Each subject given a session the day before the exam to prepare students for the exam. (Based on exam timetable).

After an examination period or progress check period

Reward linked to good performance in the exam period/assessment period.

Elevate exam preparation seminars To date there have been 3 sessions delivered by Elevate. Below is a brief re-cap on each session, including what was covered in the follow up Personal Development lessons. Session 1 – Study Sensei Skills covered

Working consistently How to get notes done during term, instead of just before exams.

Note taking How to get the ideas students have extracted from their readings into an organised set of notes that facilitate effective learning.

Conceptual learning skills

Teaching students how to break the information into its relevant parts as opposed to simply rote-learning the material.

Standing out on assessment

How to distinguish oneself from the thousands of other students being taught the same material.

Session 2 – Time Management Skills covered

Study routine How to develop a study routine that allows for socialising, sport and extra-curricular activities but still ensures productivity.

Working smart How to identify the work that is going to get students the most marks across their final years and how to ensure that it gets done.

Study groups Students are shown how to leverage their time across the year by using study groups. This is a particularly powerful technique for those students who struggle with time management.

Procrastination Students are introduced to the most common reasons underlying procrastination and how to manage them, if not eliminate them altogether.

Session 3 – Ace your Exams Skills covered

Effective work Students are introduced to the different types of work they can do in preparation for exams and which are the most effective. They, therefore, walk out of the seminar with an understanding of precisely what work they should be doing and when.

Fixing mistakes The students are shown how to identify exactly what they are currently doing wrong on mock exams and practice papers and how to ensure these mistakes are not made in the exam room.

Allocation of time Students are taken through a step-by-step process to ensure preparation is completed weeks in advance.

Exam room techniques

Including stress management, planning, time allocation and how to tailor a succinct, focused answer.

Future sessions There will be two further sessions from Elevate. One of these seminars is scheduled prior to your mock exams and the other will be leading into your final GCSE exams during Year 11. Session 4 – Memory Mnemonics (May or October 2017) Skills covered

Understanding memory and how we manipulate it.

Examination of why we forget.

How to ensure more information is retained.

Effective revision strategies.

How to minimise reliance on rote learning.

Session 5 – Finishing Line (February 2018) Skills covered

How to set or reassess short term goals.

How to work effectively during the exam period itself.

Getting work done during holidays and how to avoid putting it off.

The importance of sleep and what bad sleep patterns do to productivity.

Exam tips and strategies for preparation and the exam room itself.

Additional Guidance

Help for students

What can I do before every lesson? Ensure you have all equipment which may be needed in the lesson.

Ensure you have completed all homework to the best of your ability.

Ensure you arrive on time and in a suitable state of mind to work well.

What can I do during every lesson?

Try your very best.

Do not be afraid to make mistakes, there is nothing wrong with this as long as you learn from it.

Always ask for help if you aren’t sure how to do something.

Volunteer ideas and answers during whole class discussions.

Help, encourage and support your class mates. Remember, it is ok for them to make mistakes too.

Think creatively and don’t give up if the answer isn’t immediately obvious.

Where can I find resources?

Make good quality notes while your teacher is explaining the work, copy down examples and show all workings. This will enable you to revise from your work and also for the teacher to help you identify any mistakes you may make.

There are many good websites with high quality revision resources. Some of these are

https://vle.mathswatch.co.uk/vle/ http://www.mathsgenie.co.uk/ https://corbettmaths.com/

How should I use the revision guide?

Read through the page in the revision guide and then try the questions in the revision workbook. If you find the questions hard or get them wrong, you will need to look into this topic in more detail, for example by using Mathswatch.

Remember, you learn Maths by doing questions, not by reading books.

Use your RAG sheet that you are given after every test to identify topics that you answered badly. These will always be a good starting place when choosing which topics to revise.

Before a test, you will be provided with a list of topics. Use your revision guide to revise these topics.

How can I independently support my own learning?

Reflect on your understanding after each lesson. If you find a lesson hard, go over the topic before the next lesson for example by using Mathswatch.

Go to the after school drop-in with any topics that you are struggling with.

Every week, go over a few topics that you have done previously, especially those which you found hard. This will help keep them fresh in your mind and will mean you have less to revise later on.

Start your homework early on so that you can ask for help if you struggle with it.

Page 11: Revision and Exam Preparation Study Support 2016-18fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/HarlingtonUpperSchool...List of revision topics given to students and added

11

Help for parents

Is there an appropriate text book or revision guide which will help?

We use the CGP Mathematics for GCSE textbook in class which is readily available if you wish to buy a copy.

If you wish to buy a revision guide, we recommend the Edexcel revision guide and revision workbook although any Maths 9-1 revision guide is fine. Please check your child’s tier of entry before buying any books.

Where can I find past papers? As this is a new specification, there are no past papers. In Year 11 we will provide

students with any past papers which are available as well as other practice papers.

What should my child be doing to prepare for each lesson?

Students should ensure that they go over anything that they might not be comfortable with in their previous lesson prior to the next one. They can do this using a number of resources, for example Mathswatch.

It is important to be fully equipped for all lessons.

Complete any homework on time and to the best of their ability.

What should my child be doing leading into an assessment or exam?

Students are given a list of topics to revise in preparation for a test. They should work through this in the weeks leading up to the test.

However, the best way to prepare is to work well throughout the course, ensuring that any work which isn’t understood well in lessons is worked on.

How can I help my child revise for Maths?

Encourage them to work consistently throughout the course, asking for help whenever they need it and learning how to look for help independently, for example through Mathswatch.

It is important to revise topic areas that your child struggles with as well as working through practice papers to get a feel for a paper in general.

When revising, little and often works best so doing something every day is better than lots of work once a week.

What’s the best way to support my child with their learning?

Be positive about Maths and help them see the value in doing well in the subject. Do not tell them that you were never any good at Maths and do not expect them to be either.

Encourage them to revise little and often rather than leave everything until close to tests.

Ensure your child knows their logins and passwords for Mathswatch.

Provide them with a calm place to do their work and ensure they are fully equipped with all the equipment they may need; pens, pencil, rubber, ruler, scientific calculator (we recommend the Casio FX-83), protractor and pair of compasses.

Logging into Mathswatch – the details to log in are;

What can I do before every lesson?

Review previous lesson notes- if studying a set work, look at the score and listen to the set work; make notes of any points not understood or that need clarification ready to ask the teacher during the next lesson.

Ensure that all homework is complete. If unsure of the task, do not wait until the next lesson to ask for help; find the teacher at break/lunch for support or ask a peer.

What can I do during every lesson?

Focus hard and try your best!

Listen, think and ask questions.

If you do not understand, be resilient, ask a peer or a teacher, keep asking until you do understand; everyone learns differently, we need to find the best way to suit your learning style.

Where can I find resources?

Resources are created within the department but you can find others on line. Take care; however, as these won’t necessarily have been vetted by a teacher and, therefore, may not be accurate or relevant to your course.

YouTube is a great site to listen to music that you are learning to play for your assessments or to support wider listening for your set works. Please ensure that you listen to the tracks given to you from school for your specific set works and not other versions, as they may differ to the ones given by the Exam Board.

How should I use the revision guide?

The CGP guide has the basic facts; we may go into more detail than this. Simply use it as a cross reference or when asking for someone at home to test you on your knowledge and understanding.

How can I independently support my own learning?

Practice your instrument/singing ideally every night or at the very least, every other day for at least 20 minutes. Targeted practice: work on the more tricky parts; don’t keep playing the parts that you are confident in!

Review keywords on a regular basis and practice applying them to unfamiliar listening.

Practice starting each track in random places; e.g. at the start of verse 2, or the outro. Initially, use your revision cards/mind map/A3 sheet to help you identify the part of the song/piece and to explain what you hear/what is happening in this section (refer to the Elements of Music; sonority, texture, dynamics etc.). Ultimately, you should complete this exercise without using your notes.

We will complete practice essay questions/answers in class, follow the system we use to practice writing answers at home.

Use Auralia and Musition software (which is on all of the computers in the Music Department) to enhance your aural and music theory skills.

Help for parents

How will my child be able to revise?

Students will create personalised revision resources at the end of each unit/set work according to their preferred revision style. Students will also have access to the recordings of the set works and should regularly listen to them whilst following their annotated scores.

Where can I find past papers?

This is the first year on this new specification so there is currently very little available. We are purchasing any sample papers that are published whilst creating our own which will be available to the students later in Year 11. Currently, students have a listening homework book linked to YouTube, which although is not specific to Edexcel and the specification, is never the less, a very useful resource and can and should be revisited during the revision period in Year 11.

As part of the exam is a listening exam, it is vital that students listen to all types of music on a regular basis and try and analyse what they hear by using the keywords that they have learnt. (Revision cards are available to support this practice).

What should my child be doing leading into an assessment or exam?

For practical assessments, as soon as students are given their piece for assessment, they should be practising every night for at least 20 minutes, focusing on the more complex sections and building the piece up gradually. They should ideally perform to other people on a number of occasions to overcome performing nerves. They should refer to their instrumental/vocal teachers practice notes.

For listening assessments and written assessments see above: “How can I independently support my own learning? “

How can I help my child revise for Music?

See above: “How can I independently support my own learning? “ In all instances you can test your child.

Using the keyword cards/vocab sheets, ask him/her what the keyword means or conversely, give him/her the definition and ask them what the keyword is.

Play the set work to them and ask what they are hearing (you should have the annotated score in front of you to support).

Look at past questions/essay revision cards – ask your child to answer the questions.

Play all types of music; ask your child to describe the Elements.

What’s the best way to support my child with their learning?

Have regular routines – starting/ending times for revision/instrumental/vocal practice.

Work through the above suggestions.

Prior to formal exams – whether internal or external, help create a revision timetable, break each area of the course down into revision sessions, e.g. each set work- subdivide into listening revision and essay revision. Follow above guidelines.

Help for parents

Is there an appropriate text book or revision guide which will help?

Students have been provided with the revision guide to use as part of their learning.

The course textbook is ‘OCR GCSE (9-1) Computer Science’ and although there is no essential need to purchase the book it might prove helpful when completing homework.

Where can I find past papers and how many should be attempted?

This is the first year on this new specification so any past papers are not based on this course. It doesn’t mean that some of the content is not relevant and the vast majority of the past paper will still be useful. They can be found on the website below under the past paper section ; http://www.ocr.org.uk/qualifications/gcse-computing-j275-from-2012/

The more past papers that are completed the better.

What should my child be doing to prepare for each lesson?

Checking that homework, if there was any, has been completed.

Reading the notes from the previous lesson.

Have a list of anything they don’t understand and E-mail the teacher prior to the lesson or visit the ICT office at break or lunch.

What should my child be doing leading into an assessment or exam?

Spending an appropriate amount of time preparing.

Looking at the list of revision topics provided on Show My Homework prior to the assessment and ensuring that all are covered.

Asking for help if there are areas or topics they do not understand.

How can I help my child revise for Computer Science?

Ensure that Computer Science is on their revision timetable.

Make sure they have a quiet space to revise.

Test students on the material they have on their revision cards.

What’s the best way to support my child with their learning?
