THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES

E What a great year for sports lovers, and also for those who are not

really sports lovers. Why? Because up to now there has been no other

event, whether religious, political or cultural that has been able to

pull in the crowds like The Olympic Games.

Sport is one of human beings’ oldest activities. It has such a great

power of attraction because humans look for perfection, just for the

satisfaction of feeling good (being faster, jumping higher,…) We’d

never have imagined that the strength and skill of the human body

could reach such impressive levels.

Athletes are characterized by traits like motivation, discipline and

an iron will. Achieving their goal makes them immensely happy. We

admire them because most of us are much lazier when it comes to

achieving goals in our daily life. But if you take note and you apply

this to your studies, you’ll fi nd that the eff ort has been worth it and

you’ve achieved your objectives.

Life shows us that nothing is free. Everything is obtained with eff ort,

and if that isn’t the case, beware!

Now the good weather is coming and the school year is fi nishing,….

Enjoy sport!!

Enjoy The Olympic Games!!

ENJOY THE SHOW!!

If you’re thinking of visiting London while the Games are taking place, you should get your skates on to book your trip as fl ights and accommodation are selling out. My family were lucky enough to get their hands on some precious tickets for the Olympics but have had to spend around 150% more on their hotel. It’s no surprise that businesses have upped their prices to cash in as much as possible on the millions of tourists who will fl ood to London this summer. Nonetheless this is indeed a double-whammy year for the UK with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and hosting the Olympics which will bring a much-needed feel good factor in the midst of the hard times brought on by the recession. With the new wave of patriotism thanks to the Games, I must follow suit and cheekily say, “Rule Britannia!” (I still love you Spain).

The London Olympics Are Almost Here... As the anticipation is hotting up, it’s not long to go until London 2012 is upon us. Take a stroll along Barcelona’s waterfront and it’s easy to see the legacy the 1992 Olympics left here. Twenty years ago this city had its back turned to the sea. Now it’s the perfect spot for a bit of sport or maybe something less taxing like sunbathing. It’s hard to imagine but before the Games the lovely long stretch of beach was an industrial dumping ground. Amazing! The global profi le of the Games transformed the city’s image. Now it’s one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world, with the number of visitors doubling in the ten years that followed. There’s no question that the Olympics helped to regenerate Barcelona, turning it into one of the most vibrant and popular cities around the world, but what will the impact of London 2012 be? I guess only time will tell if it will live up to Barcelona’s legacy. In the run up to London 2012, the city’s skyline has been transformed into a rather futuristic landscape with the addition of The Olympic Park in the east of the city right next to the Stratford City development and closer to the centre who could miss Shard London Bridge? Its glass spire rises 320 metres into the London sky making it the EU’s tallest building.

London has been getting everything ready for many months and the anticipation is palpable. The Olympic fl ame has been lit in Ancient Olympia, Greece and the London Olympic torch is currently touring the UK and Ireland before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium in east London on 27th July to a worldwide television audience of billions. As you’d expect during the world’s largest sporting event, roads and public transport will be much busier than usual, so the “Get Ahead of the Games” campaign has been created to help people understand where the travel hotspots will be and enable them to plan in advance to make their journeys easier. Many companies are letting their employees work from home or change their working hours a little during the busiest dates.
