Linnahall has been closed since 2009

“Linnahall Concert hall would stand simultaneously as a monument to a bygone era and a sign of the beginning of a new one”

Location

The site showed different characteristics:outside:• very windy because of the sea• the steps can be really slippery• views to the city and to the sea are beautiful• sun is visible from almost everywhere• volume of the building is enormous• shape of the building is flat• it is uncomfortable that various platforms are not connected to eachother• the surrounding infrastructure is not so clear: how to get there by car?

inside:• building needs renovation• water damages because of the flat shape and poor construction• due to vastness, makes a wow-effect every time• the best technology of that time has been used• different ceiling heights are united to each other in a really elegant way

The author of this thesis was not allowed inside the ice rink, since the ceiling of that part of the building is not safe enough, because of that, there are not any up to date photos of ice rink used in this project.

Analysis of the siteAnalysing the existing & improvement ideas

This master thesis approaches the site as an urban landscape. This means, that the project only states that the inside needs renovation, but this thesis will not deal with the inside of the building.

Currently Linnahall is surrounded by wasteland, but in the thesis project, following developments are included:• New Town Hall of Tallinn• New development of the northern area of Tallinn Harbour

New development of Tallinn Harbour Northen area

What has been done at Linnahall

This detour shows that small things can be important and interesting and eyecatching.

But it also shows, that none of it matters when the foundation isdecaying. The building itself needs to be renovated, to be able to be enlivened again.

This is a selection of the workshops and installations done at Linnahall

Dividing the building

All the previous gave the idea to divide the building into three areas:1. Ice rink2. Concert hall3. Harbour

This devision asked for new programme: 1. The rooftop of the ice rink will be transformed into a market area. There will be a new entrance to the ice rink to make the “running circle” in the proposed park. Existing parkinglots will be transformed into active and passive parks.

2. Concert hall rooftops will be turned into green rooftops and there will be a new pavillion on top of the roof as a cafe. The rooftops can be used as an urban gardens for people living nearby.

3. For the best sun direction, the existing harbour building will be demolished and tuned into a beach area. The harbour offices will be moved to the other side of the building. The existing pool will be extended towards the sea, to get longer swimming distance.

From this devision, more detailed solution will be provided for the rooftop cafe.

Process Reviving Linnahall 37

Page 38: Reviving Linnahall - Book #3 - Process

It was recommended by the tutor, to apply construction phases and to analyse what would be the first thing to do, to invite people back to Linnahall.

This thought revealed that harbour bath would be a good startingpoint. To get people to walk all the way to the harbour and give them opportunities to stay there for a longer time. Other phases will be additions to already known paths and therefore would be easier to start using them.

A change of focus was made after these conclusions, from rooftop cafe to harbour bath.

As the project developed, the landscape was populated more and more.

Overall concept

Three superimposed layersThe aim of the layers is to connect and reunite different areas.

The red layer connects Culture Kilometer to the new harbour development. By overlaping the landscape, the red layer also unites all the rooftops. The green and yellow layer are reuniting the promenade to a circular path at the harbour.

To break the dull and gray outlook of Linnahall, all the layers are designed noticable, colourful and playful.

The red layer is named ”Red pier”

The green layer is named ”Green path”

The yellow layer is named ”Yellow river”

Names derive from the characteristics of the layers. Red pier is noticable and acts as a pier. Green path is combined with nature and walkways. Yellow river is colourful and floats over the landscape as a river.

In the Green path layer, the aim of the plantations is to change from city-like plantation to seaside plantation.

The draft of the site plan shows that a bridge can do more than just connect two points. So in this thesis, the bridge transforms into a pier, where the bridge is left as

a shadow under the pier.
