EDITOR’S NOTE

So, here we are again, my friends... smack dab in the middle of the 2014 Revolt Summer Surf Series. Two of four events have already gone off this season - so far, so good. We’ve been experiencing record turnouts this summer with great local, National & International talent showing up in large numbers (including some of the best surfers in the world). We

now attract somewhere between 100-125 riders to each event. Stoked!

Top SD surfers including Ricky Whitlock, Brent Riley, Austin Ware, Jeff Lukasic, JD Lewis & Johnny Noris have been going head to head with some top riders from Brazil. Riders like Willian Cordoso (who incidentally, just took second place at the 2014 Van’s US Open of Surfing) and even the infamous Neco Padaratz have shown up to throw down with our best surfers.

Another young Brazilian, Luan Wood, recently gave everyone a run for the money at stop #2 with his local wave knowledge (we heard he now lives here in PB some-where?) Not only did he claim first place in the Junior men’s division, he also took home first place in the Men’s Pro Am. Wow! The kid’s got a future in the sport!

Juniors like Remy Jaboori, Tanner Ford & Dillon Najor have been putting on a great show for the fans this summer. We look forward to seeing how this series plays out.

The Surf Shop Challenge has been drawing a solid lineup & this stop saw Rusty Board Shop of La Jolla taking top spot & the lads walking away with 400 bucks!

I digress... Giving a shout to the top riders in our series is difficult - there are so many talented surfers in each division. Eric McHenry, Jay Christenson, the Johnson sisters... SUP surfers are throwing down this season & Noah Hopper is kicking butt! The Women’s Pro Am is stacked & the groms are always a blast to watch - Ok, I could go on for the remainder of this column - or better yet - you can just go check out the images, videos & season points online at www.revoltsurfseries.com.

As these events continue to unfold... time and time again, Leslie and I are im-pressed by the sportsmanship & camaraderie between the surfers. We are one of the only events around that continue to include shortboarders, longboarders & Stand Up Paddlers together, in one competition, on the same day. There is little (or no) negativity or ‘vibe’ between the surfers. Everyone is just having a great day surfing. That’s the objective - it’s all about the fun of surfing.

Our partners this season are another reason we’re having all this great success. Our presenting sponsor Hoven Vision has been making sure the riders (and a bunch of lucky fans) are covered by their quality sunglasses. SurfersVillage.com has been getting the word out about the events - Worldwide! Red Bull & Dos Equis have been stepping up the setup & entertainment at all our events. The DJ’s on the beach and at the official after parties are simply blowing the shit up! Thanks DJ Schoney, Fresh One, Slip Matt & Tantrum - you guys are on fire!

The next event is coming up fast - It all goes down August 23 at the Ocean Beach Pier. Look for a large SUP Surf presence at this one - It’s gonna be our season FINALE for the SUP crowd (our last RSSS event in October falls on the same day as the Battle of the Paddle & anyone in the SUP world will be expected at that event). OB has always served up solid surf & large crowds in the past. I expect this one will be much the same, if not better. If you have not taken the time to check out an RSSS event, now may be a good time to start. San Diego - Support your local surfers!

NEWS FLASH! We have developed a brand new event for San Diego. The SSSR or ‘SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY’ RACES! This is a flatwater SUP & Prone paddle race combined with Pro Am Beach Volleyball. An Outdoor retailer show, combined with Live music & Great food. We expect to attract some of the best SUP & Prone Paddle racers in the world. True Beach will hold their qualifying tournament for the big show the following weekend at BeachFest in PB. It all goes down September 28th at Mariners Point on Mission Bay. Anyone can compete. Young, old, male, female...Bring it! Admission to the venue is free and the event is family friendly.Stay tuned for more info

Until then... We’ll see ya at the beach! ~ B & L

Luan Wood captures 1st in BOTH Junior Men’s and the Men’s Pro Am division at stop #2The second stop of the Revolt Summer Surf Series Pro Am took place in July with challenging (but contestable) 2-4 foot S-SW waves. Patience was the key to advancing your heats, with long lulls between sets. But with key wave selection, the experienced riders were picking off clean waves consistantly - more than a few clean tube rides had the crowd on the beach and the pier cheering through out the day.

Top riders from Brazil including the infamous Nico Padaratz, William Cor-doza & newcomer Luan Wood joined the competition to challenge the So. Cal competitors.

The RSSS judges had their work cut out for them at this event. Just a few points made the difference in multiple divisions. In the Men’s Pro Am 1st place went to Luan Wood, while a close 2nd went to Vince Boulanger - 3rd Austin Ware & 4th went to Jeff Lukasik

Noah Hopper captured his second consecutive 1st place in Junior SUP. Stand Up Paddle divisions have a blast at these events with a real cama-raderie between the competitors. The series Finale for the SUP divisions will take place at stop #3 as most SUP competitors plan to attend the Dana Pt. Battle of the Paddle same day as our final event in October.New to the event was Avasin surfboards. Seasoned shaper Scott Sher-wood, teamed up with Seth Stuckert & Pro Surfer Ricky Whitlock to create this new surfboard manufacturing company. A growing roster of Avasin team riders includes the likes of Ricky Whitlock & brand ambassador Aus-tin Ware.

Rusty Board Shop La Jolla takes the secondRevolt Surf Shop Challenge. Also new to the event was WOW Factor Attractions. Giant inflatables that people climb into and ride in the wild surf. Very fun to watch - even more fun to climb inside!

MECCA II Director; BJ Johnson was at the event, keeping an eye on some of the top riders competing, that were featured in his new surf film.

Visitors enjoyed the displays on-site provided by Hoven, Dos Equis, Ava-sin Surfboards, FreeGun, Snow Summit, ZipCar.com and others - all sorts of games, giveaways, samples & equipment demos were there to engage the fans.

The RSSS provided new “wings” to their athletes and select fans at stop #2 by offering the exclusive, limited-edition Red Bull flavor Summer Edi-tion in the Red Bull surfer’s lounge. It provides the effect of Red Bull En-ergy Drink with the new flavor of tropical fruits. The RSSS is the only event in Southern California (and beyond) to sample the new flavor this summer.

Thrusters Lounge in Pacific Beach was the location of the RSSS Offi-cial After Party. 94.9 FM Station was onsite from 5 -7pm with van, tent & sound system. Raffling & give away prizes (i.e., concert or event tickets, CD’s, t-shirts, etc.) Street tacos by Taquizas El Unico were served and Live surfboard art by the multi-talented Jeff Lukasik was a hit with the guests. DJ Schoeny killed it with his high energy music.

The highly anticipated, second installment of the underground surf film, MECCA.

Created by local film maker, B.J. Johnson, the raw

energy of Mecca II is undeniable. Led by local high

performance surfers including Austin Ware, Cory

Lopez, Ricky Whitlock, David Suhadolnik, Hunter

Lysaught, Jeff Lukasik, Nate Yeomans, Torrey

Meister, and JD Lewis, Ryland Rubens, these riders

take you into their world of high energy, passion

laden surfing, and lay bare the drive and mindset

that differentiates elite riders.

The film is presented by Hoven, San Diego’s edgy,

action sport sunglass company. MECC

BJ- Thanks, Revolt for reaching out to the MEC-CA II clan for a Q & A. As the filmmaker, I will briefly describe what to expect from this film.

REVOLT: Is there a theme?

BJ: Basically, the theme is to showcase a broad variety of talent ranging from So Cal’s wonder-grom Ryland Rubens (14), to a surf video icon Cory Lopez (37), and everyone in between. This film was shot throughout a one year span with most, with an exception to (Torrey Meister and Cory Lopez). I will admit, it was an awesome year of filming. In general, MECCA is a move-ment, not just a film.

REVOLT: what kind of gear did you use? Com-pared to the first?

BJ: I used a Canon DSLR, with a good zoom lens. MECCA I was filmed with a Canon XL2 20X lens mini DV Video Camera. This camera was the go-to from 2001-2005. Still an awesome camera to have in the bag, if you can remember how to use it.

REVOLT: is the gas mask guy gonna make an ap-pearance in MECCA II?

BJ: Bishop is his name, and yes he is. But, only fragments compared to the first film. The surfers have taken the roll of creating their own skits and awkwardness for everyone to enjoy. Also, I’ve recently joined forces with an amazing cinema-tographer named Riley Mundia from San Clem-ente, who has made this film that much better! You’re the man Riley!

REVOLT: Who else is behind MECCA II?

BJ: My Mom and Dad love the concept. There is no one behind MECCA II, just the surfers and I. It’s a raw do-it-yourself film, paired with an awe-some soundtrack! Check it out.

REVOLT: Any shout-outs to friends or sponsors?

BJ: I’d like to thank Hoven for presenting my film. Hansen and Avasin surfboards. Rusty and billabong. All the surfers who believed in me and put up with my hard headed-ness. And especial-ly my Mom and Dad for never doubting me when I put my mind to something.

BJ- Cheers.

WHAT HAS HAWAII TAUGHT YOU?Hawaii has tought me the spirit of Aloha and also how to genuinely get worked in the water.

ANY SHARK ENCOUNTERS?When I was surfing in Florida there was a big group of spinner sharks flying out of the water but I felt safe in the crowd and just kept my feet up. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG GIRLS WHO WANT TO BE PRO SURFERS?For all you young girls that dream of becoming a pro surfer, I encourage you all to chase after that dream and make sure it is your own dream and it is what you truly love doing and want to persue
