As another year draws to a close and I reflect on all achieved within Rice College: the amazing win by our Golfers in Balmoral, Belfast has got to be the highlight. Rice College, Westport is the new Irish Senior Schools Golf champions 2013. Well done! Congratulations to the many students who excelled in an array of academic and sporting disciplines this year. These young men were feted at our Awards Night in May. Well done to the 2nd. Year GAA team who continue to impress, winning Connaught at “A” level and good luck to all competing over the summer. Congratulations to all the Students who received the “Student of the Year” and the many students who were nominated for this coveted award. Congratulations to all the selected “Sportspersons of the Year”. It was also very positive to have so many students receiving an award for 100% attendance. Certification from the National Education Welfare Board (NEWB) for this is a very welcome development. I wish Mr. Pat Fleming and Mr. Maurice Rice together with their families, a healthy and happy retirement, as they depart the teaching profession after so many years of loyal and dedicated service. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they will be greatly missed and that their voices will echo in the corridors of Rice College for many years to come. We wish the Leaving Certificate, Junior Certificate and the Leaving Certificate Applied all the best in their examinations and pray that their nerves stay calm and that they remember all the data and information studied. Many thanks to the local community. I wish to extend my huge appreciation to all the staff, the Parent’s Council and to those who have volunteered their time so freely and worked and supported me throughout the school year. Dates to remember: First Year Students will start with “Mentors for Induction” on Tuesday, 27th August 2013. Registration week will commence on Monday, 19th August 2013. Further details on the above will follow in early August. “Per Ardua ad Astra” Message from our Principal Rice College golfers were crowned Irish Senior Schools Golf champions following a famous victory over De La Salle Waterford in Balmoral Golf Club on Tuesday last. The other schools competing were Malahide Community school and Regent House Grammar School, Newtownards. The Rice College boys were up against Ulster opponents in the semi finals with five matches involved and all matches off scratch. The result was in doubt right up to the very end with Regent House winning the top two matches and Rice College levelling matters with wins by Joe Hastings and Jack O’Donnell. As in the Provincial final, the outcome lay in the capable hands of Sam Gillivan and again he came up trumps with victory on the 18th green. The final took place in the afternoon. De La Salle, unlucky losers in the 2012 final and winners in 2011, brought pedigree and valuable experience with them to this final. The Westport boys were unfazed by all of this and proceeded to play with confidence and resolve. In the early part of the contest De La Salle were ahead in most matches but slowly the pendulum swung Rice’s way. In the top match Jack Healy showed his class winning on the 17th. Next up was Matthew Golden, getting into the groove when the need was greatest, playing a fantastic 6 iron from 180 yards to 10 feet from the flag to register Rice’s second point. Sam Gillivan again came to the fore and delivered the knockout punch on the 16th green. Rice College were All Ireland Champions! The remaining games were called in and the spoils were divided to give an overall score: Rice College 4, De La Salle 1. It should be mentioned that both Joe Hastings and the tenacious Jack O’Donnell were up in their respective matches, Jack overturning a 3 hole defecit to be ahead when called in. Harry Gillivan was a reserve and valuable caddie for his brother Sam. Team captain Joe Cuddy had an emotional few moments with his team and their parents on the 17th green before returning to the clubhouse to receive their pennant, shield and all Ireland medals. Congratulations to all involved. It was a brilliant performance and a fantastic victory. Awards evening in Rice College By Pat Dunne Roy Keane, the Irish international, once uttered the memorable phrase, ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail.’ While Roy provokes mixed reactions, very few could question his commitment, hard work and courage when he competed at the highest levels. Rice College’s recent Awards night was a perfect opportunity to recognise and commend the young men who have made an outstanding contribution during the last year. Sporting achievements will always be visible. It is entirely appropriate that the team successes in our major sports such as Athletics, Gaelic, Rugby and Soccer are celebrated. Rice College students also participated with great distinction in Handball. Team sports by their very nature require shared goals and intense effort from all members. It is incredibly satisfying when the team performance is greater than the sum of its parts. Then the hard work is forgotten and all the participants can enjoy the sweet taste of victory. However, there are many aspects of school life that take place in quieter arenas which may not also seek or draw the same level of attention. Many students achieved academic excellence on a national stage through participation in writing and poetry competitions. Others excelled in Art with the Doodle for Google competition. Student participation in the Science quiz at Junior and Senior level has been particularly rewarding given the need to improve Ireland’s performance in the Science/Technology sectors. Students have also achieved excellence in Irish and Maths. A significant number of young men have been recognised for their perfect attendance and punctuality records. It’s difficult to teach empty desks and so this contribution to school life deserves recognition as it sets an appropriate example for all students and is a reminder of the standards that will be required in later life in the workplace. Many other students were praised for enriching all our lives in Rice College. These include the young men on the Green Schools Committee as well as the musicians and singers who have lit up many events this year with their beautiful music. The mentors also made an incredibly valuable contribution. There were amazing individual performances throughout the year in a wide variety of disciplines. Participating in drama, excelling in the Sea to Summit, devising the Science posters and participating in “Our Schools Got Talent” generated very special memories. The students who participated with distinction in the John Paul 2 Awards programme should also be acknowledged as this programme requires a long term commitment. There was an elite group of students who excelled in the academic and sporting arenas who merit recognition. It is entirely appropriate that Rice College would invite the many students who achieved in excess of 500 points in their Leaving Certificate last year to return so they could be celebrated on this special night. Teaching and learning is central to the mission in Rice College and these students are truly part of a national elite. We expect great things from these young men in the future. Their example will speak to all students within the school and will remind them that the pursuit of academic excellence is a worthy goal. All students should seek to achieve their true potential and achieving a personal best whether it is 200 or 625 points in the Leaving Certificate or achieving exemplary results in the Leaving Certificate Applied is a cause for celebration. Equally, students who pursue alternative career paths, building on their unique abilities outside of the third level sector, will merit recognition in future years. Finally, there was a very small cohort of students who hit the highest standard as they were All Ireland winners. This is an exceptional achievement and the winners in Golf, Boxing and Soccer deserve enormous praise. There is only one All Ireland title and for a young man to have his name inscribed on the Roll of Honour in one particular year is a spectacular achievement. Many of these moments pass by in a blur of excitement and adrenaline are exist only within the memory. Happily, you tube allows us to view Con Doherty’s stirring achievement in securing a bronze medal in the World Junior Triathlon Championship in New Zealand last October. His bravery, particularly when he led the field on the bike is truly inspirational. Con has two more years at this age group and this gives us all great hope for the future as this was Ireland’s first international medal in the triathlon. Of course, the participants and winners get the glory. It is fair to say that there is a dedicated army of parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers and coaches in the background. There would be nothing to celebrate without the generosity shown by countless numbers of individuals who give their time to support, to reassure, encourage and occasionally challenge all of our young people as they embark on their unique pathways in pursuit of excellence. Brendan Kennelly, the Irish poet once described good poems as ‘flashes of light in the darkness of the heart and mind.’ While we are living through exceptionally difficult times, any achievement by young person represents a poetic moment, a true work of art which has the capacity to lift the spirit, to inspire all of us and to remind us that we can all work together to create a magnificent future. Well done to all our young men on your heroic achievements. We’re already looking forward to next year. We make no apology for pursuing and achieving even greater success in the future. Hopefully, the Awards night will be an even bigger event next year. Michael Rabbette, School Principal receives a commemorative statuette from Christy Madigan, Capt. Westport Golf Club Rice College 8 - 9 St. Muredach’s 6 - 12 Goals win games! This was a wonderful contest. The ball settled in the net 14 times! Unfortunately for us St. Muredach’s found the net 8 times and won the game in extra time. A goal for Muredach’s in the first minute of the game forced Rice College into heroic defending as St Muredach’s continued with unrelenting pressure. The turning point for Rice College came with the introduction of Fintan McManamon. The full forward put in a performance that Donegal’s All-Star Michael Murphy would have been proud of. John Ryan was moved to mid-field and began to send high balls into McManamon who was denied at first by the Muredach’s keeper until Daniel McGovern, picking up a loose ball, slotted it home. St. Muredach’s started the 2nd. half with the same intensity, forcing Stephen Walsh to make a brilliant save. Two goals for Muredach’s followed in quick succession! The situation looked ominous. John Ryan began to stamp his authority in midfield and sent in a long ball which Andrew Currid stuck in the top corner of the Muredach’s net. The goal lifted the Rice College challenge and Pat Lambert landed another point in the next attack. A goal and a point from Fintan McManamon followed and minutes later McManamon was in for his 2nd. goal, coming from excellent build -up play from John Ryan and Declan Shanahan. Muredach’s were a goal up with seconds of normal time remaining, when Keith Joyce at wing back found the net from long range to tie the game to the delight of the Westport support. Both teams continued to fight on in extra time with every ball being contested. Despite Rice College scoring 2 more goals, including McManamon’s hat trick and late frees from Pat Lambert, St. Muredach’s forward Luke Honan secured victory with a late goal. Our boys were disappointed, no doubt, but they can be very proud of the way they stood up to the challenge. Victory awaits this team in the near future.

On the 8th of May Rice College celebrated its annual Edmund Rice Memorial Mass in the school gym. The Mass celebrates the lives of those students and teachers who have gone to their eternal reward and remembers in a special way their grieving families. Fr. Karl celebrated the Mass with Darragh Reidy singing a beautiful song appropriate to the occasion. Thanks to all the readers, gift bearers and singers who made the Mass such a thoughtful and prayerful occasion.A special thanks is extended to Mr. Chris Gibbons who laid a wreath at the Memorial Garden. Following the ceremony, refreshments were enjoyed in the College by all present where they enjoyed some pleasant conversation.Go ndéanaigh Dia trócaire ar a n-anamacha. A group of 2nd Year students and myself travelled to GMIT Galway recently to participate in the “Future Skills” project, supported by GMIT Access Service. On our arrival we were met by the Registrar of GMIT, Mr. Michael Hannon, who outlined the courses available in the College and the financial assistance available to students. The “Future Skills” project encourages the student to aim for a qualification in an area that is of particular interest to him or her.

Volunteers from Hewlett Packard, Boston Scientific, Avaya, Oracle and Top Oil assisted our boys in workshops, exploring employment opportunities. This was

followed by an extensive tour of the College and its facilities, conducted by GMIT staff. On our tour we were delighted to meet a few of our past pupils and wished them success in their examinations. The assembled students, coming from schools in Galway and Mayo, were addressed by guest speakers: Yvonne McArdle, SAP; Gearóid Lacey, HP; Pat Howard, Thermo King; and Dave Hickey, Connacht Tribune. The speakers stressed the part played by education in gaining a successful career. Our links here in Rice College with Junior Achievement Ireland - encourage young people to remain in education and teaches them the skills they need to succeed in a changing world. Junior Achievement Ireland teaches young people about the world of work, encouraging them to remain in education. This event brings enthusiastic business volunteers from local organisations into the classroom to run enterprise and life skills programmes motivating and inspiring young people to value education and equip them with the skills they need to succeed at school and in life. I would like to thank the students for attending and participating so enthusiastically in the workshops. I wish to thank also, Mr. Ray Fogarty for helping to organize a most enlightening and enjoyable experience.

It was not just the sun that shone brightly on the 24th of May as we celebrated our Leaving Certificate Mass. Each and every one of our Leaving Certificate students shone brightly also. To say that the Rice College

community was proud of all the lads would be an understatement. From beginning to end each and every one of our boys showcased their many talents whether it was through their musical skills, public speaking abilities, artwork or general good behaviour. Our boys looked the part and they played the part well. Many compliments were echoed through on the night- parents, teachers, past-teachers and principals as well as some past students were in attendance and welcomed on the night. The theme of our Liturgy was ‘Stand Tall & Live for What You have Learned’ and this is exactly what our Leaving Cert boys did!!! As we wind down during our final week of this academic year we remember Donal Walsh’s words that were quoted during Myles Sammon’s well-read, humorous yet touching Homily- ‘Always Today, Never Tomorrow’. I hope that our students bring these valuable life-lessons with them as they venture on their new journey. Lads, thank you for giving us a wonderful night of music, reflection, prayer and of course your presence. Wishing you all the very best of luck in all of exams. May all your hopes & dreams come true!!!

On Wednesday 24th of April the 5th year agricultural science class attended Agri Aware’s Farm Walk & CAP Talk 2013, in association with Teagasc & IASTA, in Mountbellew Agricultural College, Co. Galway. This day is organised to help students with their 25% project work. Many other schools from around Connaught also attended this educational day.Our day started bright and early as we set off for Mountbellew at 8am. When we arrived we gathered for a talk outlining our day ahead. We were then taken on a tour of the farm, stopping at eight different stations to receive a talk; students were also allowed to take pictures to include in their projects. The eight stations were: Machinery, Suckler Cows, Beef, Sheep, Soil, Dairymaster, Grass Measurement & Dunbia. Each of the stations provided valuable information for the student’s project work.Thankfully the rain stayed away for the day, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our day at Mountbellew Agricultural College. After our farm tour, we warmed up with a cup of tea, and then we started on our journey back to Rice College, having enjoyed a great learning experience.

This term, our Second Year students visited the Mosque in Ballyhaunis, as part of their learning for the Religious Education coursework and journal project. The students were given a guided tour and Q&A session with local Muslim resident, Manor Cherbati. The boys were given the opportunity to witness the sacred place of another religious group, exploring the features of the Mosque and understanding how they aid members of the Ballyhaunis Muslim community in their worship. The Q&A session with Ms Cherbati allowed the boys to gain insight into and respect for, the lifestyle, tradition and customs of those practising the Islamic faith.

Coming towards the end of our final school term, the Greenschools committee wish to thank all the boys who participated in the Rice College cycling initiative. The Greenschools committee, working in conjunction with Westport’s Smarter Travel and Westport Town Council, worked to promote cycling within our school with the tempting offer of a free lunch to those who cycled on random days. The result was a massive increase in the number of students cycling to school each day from one to seven, who have toughed it out and cycled to school every day in wind, rain and more rain! The boys’ efforts were acknowledged in the recent Rice College Awards Ceremony and the faithful seven were rewarded with panniers by Eva Gannon, representative of the Westport Smarter Travel Group. We hope that the boys will continue “the drive to be green” next year and encourage many others to follow their example.

On Tuesday the 23rd of April, 62 TY students departed Rice College for Northern Italy their final major event of the TY programme. Day one was spent in Venice, where the students got a guided tour of the famous city and also a culture shock as to how expensive tourist traps are. Day 2 was spent in the beautiful city of Verona and aboard a boat as we had a very enjoyable cruise on Lake Garda. Day 3 was spent in Gardaland where the students turned themselves upside down and inside out on all the attractions the theme park had to offer. On day 4 we arrived in Milan and spent some time buying presents for home before we headed to the world famous San Siro stadium, home to both AC and Inter Milan. The weather was lovely and sunny and the students really seemed to make the most of the trip. A very enjoyable trip was had by all. I wish to thank all the students who took part in the TY programme during the year. I hope they got something positive out of the year. Enjoy the summer holidays.

Moving up from Primary school to Secondary school is on the minds of many 6th Class students in National

schools about now. What a mixture of excitement and wonder mixed with a little concern, this anticipated event brings to young hearts! A good start is what it is all about really and the approach taken by both parents and students is surely the key. Yes, a positive attitude, good attendance, being punctual, keeping school rules and the approach to study are all very important. However, the latter cannot be emphasised enough, or recognised to the full without a greater understanding of what it involves day to day. We have all heard the words ‘Just do your best’ when doing homework or when preparing for tests and examinations, in our attempts to educate ourselves through life. But, what does doing our ‘best’ mean in terms of STUDY? Realistically each person, young or old, will have a unique set of talents or abilities and will learn by various learning methods. Rocket science is not for everyone and our best learning style is reflected by our individual uniqueness. Knowing ourselves is the passport to getting it right and having a balanced view of our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities available to us and what may be threats to our potential success, is vital in the process. Going back to what ‘doing our best’ means in the context of a successful secondary education, we simply must recognise the value of having a routine of study all through each and every secondary school year, from January of First Year onwards. In the past, perhaps life was a bit less distracting, as those of us who are adults may not have had the many technological and social distractions faced by our young students today. All the more important therefore that consistent approaches to learning be developed early on. Good habits in this area will serve the Leaving Certificate student very well in the future. Many past students may recall the terrible scramble to study last-minute after the Mock Examinations in 6th Year. To varying degrees pupils learn by seeing (Visual), hearing (Auditory) and by doing (Kinaesthetic). These may be considered as representing different ways of processing information. Some people may say this relates to reading, writing and saying aloud what is to be learned. Research has shown that we remember 90% of what we read, hear and do at the same time. The Institute of Guidance Counsellors will be making a number of Booklets dealing with the many aspects of processing information and learning well, while progressing through secondary school, available on line in September on www.igc.ie Best wishes to all the Junior and Leaving Certificate Students taking the State Examinations and wishing them every success. Just a reminder to Students of Year 5 who wish to consider studying in the U.K., that www.ucas .com is where they will find all the appropriate information regarding deadline dates for making application for courses and what may be involved in taking related tests. In particular, reminding students of the earlier date of 15th October Application if applying for courses in Dentistry, Medical and Veterinary Courses and also for applying to the University Colleges of Oxford and Cambridge.

Paul Cadden RosbegManaging Director at Saba Restaurant

Congratulations to Paul Cadden, son of Michael and Mary Cadden, Rosbeg Westport on his award winning Thai and Vietnamese Eatery on Clarendon Street, in Dublin’s city centre. Paul tells us that “Saba” means “happy meeting place” in Thai, serving authentic cuisine at reasonable prices in a setting described as “colonial meets contemporary”.Paul Cadden is one of our illustrious past pupils, an excellent student, of pleasant disposition, ideally suited to the career he chose to follow. He graduated from Rice College in 1990.Saba was delighted to welcome Irish rugby legend and HSBC ambassador Brian O’Driscoll recently when he spent a day cooking with sous-chef Yo at the award-winning Thai and Vietnamese restaurant.

Under Paul’s stewardship, Saba has secured many prestigious awards such as:Being listed as one of the Top 100 restaurants in Dublin 2012 for the sixth year in a row by The Dubliner Magazine.Saba wins the Pickniker Award 2012 at Electric Picnic for the second year running.Saba: The Cookbook won a ‘Breakthrough Award’ at the FRESH AWARDS held in Manchester recently. We all rejoice in Paul’s success. Any move that helps stem Bullying is one to be saluted

from a recent Irish Independent editorial

“Cyber-bullying is one of the great scourges of our modern age. The phenomenon has added an insidious and sinister dimension to something which has inflicted great suffering on generations of school pupils. At least victims of the old-fashioned school-yard and classroom bullies could sometimes take a little consolation from respite outside of school hours. They could also hope that their humiliations had a small audience within the confines of the school community. But 24-hour, seven-day social media which never sleeps, and has a global reach, has put the kibosh on those scant consolations in many cases. Unfortunately, the arrival of the hi-tech bully has also offset the great progress which has been made by school authorities in tackling this issue. We must accept that it is an extremely tall order to police cyberspace. But we cannot accept that these difficulties mean we stop looking for remedies. The grievous suffering of a significant minority of school pupils, for some of whom this has literally become a life and death issue, cannot be ignored. The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals are to be congratulated for their dogged pursuit of this issue. We look forward to all internet agencies supporting their work. We also expect the Irish Government to seek EU-wide and more international remedies for this scourge, which does not respect national boundaries. The second-level teachers have shown good example here - we look forward to all others doing their duty.” Let’s hope we that we see an end to this type of abuse very quickly and ease the stress on victims.

Facebook agrees to help schools in tackling cyberbulliesPlans are afoot, involving Facebook, the Dept. of Education and Science, second level School Management and leadership bodies to work together to tackle bullying in Irish schools and to provide an effective channel for school leaders to quickly raise concerns when required. The National Association of Principals and Dep. Principals (NAPD) is concerned that the network is not prepared to deal directly with school’s and parents’ requests to take down abusive posts of a hurtful nature and their sometimes tragic consequences. NAPD looks forward to securing effective channels of communication between Facebook and schools.
