    The ice-crystal symbol ap-pears on the display.

    Possible cause:

    The air temperaturemeasured at the vehicle

    is lower than:

    approx. 3 °C

    WARNING

    Risk of black ice also applic-able at over 3 °CRisk of accident

    Always take extra carewhen temperatures arelow; remember that there isparticular danger of black iceforming on bridges and wherethe road is in shade.

    Ride carefully and think wellahead.

    Electronic immobiliseractive

    The "General" warning lightshows yellow.

    The warning symbol forthe electronic immobiliser

    appears on the display.

    Possible cause:The key being used is not au-thorised for starting, or commu-nication between key and engineelectronics is disrupted.

    Remove all other vehicle keysfrom the same ring as the igni-tion key.Use the emergency key.Have the defective key re-placed, preferably by an au-thorised BMW Motorrad dealer.

  • Fuel reserveThe amount of fuel present inthe fuel tank when the fuel warn-ing light is switched on is de-pendent on vehicle dynamics.The more the fuel moves in-side the tank (due to regularlychanging angles of heel, fre-quent braking and acceleration),the more difficult it becomes todetermine the reserve volume.For this reason, the fuel reservevolume cannot be displayed ex-actly.

    After the fuel warning lighthas switched on, the range

    is displayed automatically.The distance that can still betravelled using the reservevolume depends on the style ofdriving (usage) and the amountof fuel remaining at the time thelight came on (see explanationabove).

    The odometer for the fuel re-serve is reset when the amountof fuel after refuelling is greaterthan the reserve volume.

    Oil level

    The oil-level indicator 1 gives youan indication of the engine oillevel. You can call up this read-ing only when the vehicle is at astandstill.

    The preconditions for the oil levelcheck are as follows:

    Engine at operating tempera-ture.Engine idling for at least tenseconds.Side stand retracted.Motorcycle standing upright ona smooth, level surface.

    The readings mean:OK: Oil level is correct.CHECK: Check the oil level thenext time you stop for fuel.---: Oil level cannot be meas-ured (conditions as stated abovenot satisfied).

    If the oil level needs to bechecked, the symbol 2 is

    displayed until the oil level is de-tected as being correct again.

  • Ambient temperatureWhen the motorcycle is at astandstill, the heat of the enginecan falsify the ambient-tempera-ture reading. If the effect of theengine's heat becomes excess-ive, -- temporarily appears onthe display.

    At ambient temperatures be-low 3 °C, there is a risk of iceforming. When this temperaturethreshold is undershot for thefirst time, there will be an auto-matic switchover to the ambienttemperature display 1, irrespect-

    ive of the actual display setting;the displayed value flashes.

    WARNING

    Risk of black ice also applic-able at over 3 °CRisk of accident

    Always take extra carewhen temperatures arelow; remember that there isparticular danger of black iceforming on bridges and wherethe road is in shade.

    Tyre pressurewith tyre pressure monitoring(RDC)OE

    The front tyre pressure is on theleft 1; the reading on the right 2is the rear tyre pressure. " "appears directly after the ignitionis switched on. The sensors donot transmit tyre pressures untilthe first time the vehicle acceler-ates to more than 30 km/h. Thereference tyre-air temperature forthese tyre-pressure readings isalways 20 °C.

    If the symbol 3 also shows,this is a warning. The crit-

    ical tyre pressure flashes.

    A spare vehicle key attached tothe same ring as the radio-oper-ated key used to start the enginecould "irritate" the electronics,in which case the enabling sig-nal for starting is not issued. Thewarning with the key symbol ap-pears in the multifunction display.Always keep the spare key sep-arately from the radio-operatedkey.

    If you mislay a radio-operated keyyou can have the key in ques-tion barred by your authorisedBMW Motorrad dealer. In orderto have a key barred you mustbring along all the other keys be-longing to the motorcycle.The engine cannot be startedby a barred radio-operated key,but a radio-operated key that hasbeen barred can subsequently bereactivated.You can obtain emergency/ex-tra keys only through an author-ised BMW Motorrad dealer. Theradio-operated keys are part ofan integrated security system, sothe dealer is under an obligationto check the legitimacy of all ap-plications for replacement/extrakeys.

    Dynamic ESA PossiblesettingsUsing the electronic chassis ad-justment Dynamic ESA you cancomfortably adapt your motor-cycle to the actual vehicle load.Via ride height sensors, DynamicESA detects the movements inthe chassis and suspension andresponds to the same by ad-justing the damper valves. Thechassis and suspension will thusbe adapted to the characteristicsof the terrain.

    Starting from the basic settingNORMAL, the damping can bemade harder (HARD) or softer(SOFT).The ESA calibrates at regularintervals at a standstill with theengine running to ensure thesystem is functioning properly.Chassis adjustment is not pos-sible during this calibration.

    with Pro riding modesOE

    The setting of the chassis andsuspension and the number ofthe selectable damping variantsdepend on the riding mode se-lected. The damping defined bythe riding mode can be changedby the rider.If the coding plug is not fitted,the basic setting specified by theriding mode will be set after eachmode change.     With the motorcycle at a stand-still, the selected mode is ac-tivated after approximately twoseconds.The newly selected ridingmode is activated as youride only when the followingpreconditions are satisfied:Throttle twistgrip is in idle posi-tion.The clutch lever is operated.Following activation of the newriding mode the clock is dis-played again.The mode selected in this wayis retained with the engine-characteristic, ABS, ASC andDynamic ESA adaptation set-tings even after the ignition hasbeen switched off.

    Deactivate the RDC foroff-roading

    RequirementYou can deactivate RDC warn-ings for the Enduro and EnduroPro riding modes when you wantto lower the tyre pressures foroff-roading.

    Briefly push button 1 forward.The speed is increased by2 km/h each time the buttonis pushed.Push button 1 forward andhold it in this position.The motorcycle acceleratessteplessly.The current speed is main-tained and saved if button 1 isnot pushed again.

    Decelerating

    Briefly push button 1 back.The speed is reduced by2 km/h each time you push thebutton.Push button 1 back and hold itin this position.The motorcycle deceleratessteplessly.The current speed is main-tained and saved if button 1 isnot pushed again.

    Deactivate cruise controlBrake, pull the clutch leveror turn the throttle twistgrip(close the throttle by turning

    the twistgrip back past theidle position) to deactivate thecruise-control system.Telltale light for cruise controlgoes out.

    Resuming former cruisingspeed

    Briefly push button 1 back toreturn to the speed saved be-forehand.

    Anti-theft alarm (DWA)with alarm system (DWA) OE

    ActivationSwitching on ignition ( 46).Customising anti-theft alarmsettings ( 75).Switch off the ignition.If the alarm system is activated,then the alarm system will beautomatically activated whenthe ignition is switched off.Activation takes approximately30 seconds to complete.Turn indicators flash twice.Confirmation tone soundstwice (if programmed).Anti-theft alarm is active.

    Alarm signalA DWA alarm can be triggeredby:

    motion sensoran attempt to use an unauthor-ised vehicle key to switch onthe ignition.disconnection of the DWA anti-theft alarm from the motor-cycle's battery (DWA internalbattery in the anti-theft alarmprovides power - alarm toneonly, the turn indicators do notflash)

    All functions are sustained evenif the internal battery of the DWAanti-theft alarm system is flat; theonly difference is that an alarmcannot be triggered if the systemis disconnected from the motor-cycle's battery.

    An alarm lasts for approximately26 seconds. While an alarm is inprogress an alarm tone soundsand the turn indicators flash. Thetype of alarm tone can be set by

    If an alarm was triggered whilethe motorcycle was unattended,the rider is notified accordinglyby an alarm tone sounding oncewhen the ignition is switched on.The DWA LED then indicatesthe reason for the alarm for oneminute.Light signals issued by theDWA LED:

    Operating the heatedhandlebar grips

    NOTICE

    The heating in the heatedhandlebar grips can be activatedonly when the engine isrunning.

    NOTICE

    The increase in power consump-tion caused by having the heatedhandlebar grips switched on candrain the battery if you are rid-ing at low engine speeds. If thecharge level is low, the heatedhandlebar grips are switched offto ensure the battery's startingcapability.

    Start engine ( 93).

    Repeatedly press button 1 untildesired heating stage 2 ap-pears on the display.

    The handlebar grips have two-stage heating.

    50% heating power

    100% heating power

    Stage 2 is for heating the gripsquickly: it is advisable to switchback to stage 1 as soon as thegrips are warm.The selected heating stage willbe saved if you allow a certain

    length of time to pass withoutmaking further changes.In order to switch off theheated handlebar grips,repeatedly press button 1 untilthe heated handlebar gripsymbol 2 is no longer shownon the display.

  • Turn the key clockwise in seatlock 1 and hold it in this pos-ition while pressing down therear part of rear seat 2.Lift the rear seat at the frontand release the key.Remove the rear seat andplace it, upholstered side down,on a clean surface.

    Install the rear seat

    The rear seat can be set toeither of 2 different positions.Bear in mind the position ofthe rider`s seat with regard tothe direction for adjustment ofthe passenger seat:Centre both lugs 1 on the rearseat in the mounts.Rear seat position: Push pas-senger seat toward the rear A.Front seat position: Push pas-senger seat forward B.Lugs 1 of the rear seat are cor-rectly located.

    Firmly press down on frontseat 1 at the front.The rear seat engages with anaudible click.
