Rivers - map question C2002

Study the course of the River Dee and its valley between 866010 and 929035. Describe how the physical features of the river and its valley have influenced land use.

RiverRiver•Upper, middle or lower course?•Wide or narrow?•Gentle or steep?•Direction of flow?•Features (and grid references)

ValleyValley•V, U or other shape?•Floodplain - any, small or large?•Tributaries?•Land use?

There are very few buildings on the floodplain due to the danger of flooding (2). The land is used for farming or recreation (golf course) instead (2) as the fertile alluvial soils will help the farming (1). The edge of the valley is used for communication links (roads) (1) . The steep slopes are wooded at 876015 as it is too steep for other land use (2).

Describe the physical features of the River Carron and its valley from Lochlands (859818) to Carron House (987829).

RiverRiver•Upper, middle or lower course?•Wide or narrow?•Gentle or steep?•Direction of flow?•Features (and grid references)

ValleyValley•V, U or other shape?•Floodplain - any, small or large?•Tributaries?•Land use?

The river Carron is in its lower course (1) and is flowing in an easterl direction (1). It has many meanders (1) e.g. 894826 (1) and is tidal up to 878823 (1). It has a wide floodplain (1) though it’s narrower at Lochlands (1). There is an oxbow lake (1) at 868812.

Rivers - map question C2003

The Rivers Dee and Allt an t-Slugain and their valleys are different.

Describe these differences in detail.

The River Dee is much wider than the Allt an t-Slugain (1). The gradient of the River Dee is more gentle than the other one so it is likely to be slower flowing (2).The Dee flows east whereas the other flows south east (1). The River Dee flows in a wider U shaped valley whereas the other one is in a V shaped valley (2).

Rivers - comparing courses G2003

Look at the landscapes shown in the Reference Diagram.

Compare the physical features of the River Tay and its valley in the two diagrams

The slopes in the upper course are much steeper (1) and the valley is much narrower (1). The river is wider in its lower course (1). There is a wide floodplain in the lower course

whereas the upper course has no floodplain (1).
