Yr 7a

Yr 7b

Year 7A Students have been learning how to do basic sewing. With a few simple instructions from Ms Nicholls, they were soon experts in sewing on buttons.

They could not wait to show Mrs Atkinson their handiwork. Great Job!

LEARNING TO SEW BY HAND

A BASIC LIFESKILL WE COULD ALL USE :)

The very lucky Year 7b students won a lunch recently to celebrate being the class winners for excellent attendance. After many discussions and a vote, Hungry Jacks was the winner for lunch on 10th September. Students walked very carefully to Hungry Jacks Rockingham for a Stunner Meal Deal lunch. The Year 7b students are to be commended on their excellent behaviour. Even a mum who was enjoying her lunch, complimented our fantastic students. Comments of the day regarding the reward lunch were:-

“It is really nice and I am having fun” - Jaolyn

“I feel really happy” - Dylan

“This is the best lunch” - Sarah

“This is really good and I want to do this again” - Natalie

Well done year 7, keep up the excellent attendance.

Reward for good attendance enjoyed by Yr 7b

On the 7th of September Year 7A went to Woolworths

to participate in a ' Fresh Food Kids Tour'. We got to

go on a tour of the store and even got to go in the ice

cream freezer. It was freezing!

After our tour of the store we participated in some fun

activities about vegetables. We spoke about why the

different vegetables are good for you, and we got to

guess the different fruits and vegetables by only

feeling them. At the end of our tour, our tour leader

Kyra told us how impressed she was with how we all

had a go at answering some tricky questions and how

fantastic our behaviour was. After we left Woolworths

we went to the food court and bought our own lunch.

It was such a fun day!

Yr 8

Yr 9

As part of Science Week in August, our students got to experience “Walking on Water”. Yr 8 Teacher, Ms Batchler had the students mix up a big batch of Oobleck. Students were forewarned it could get messy, so they bought a change of clothing so they could run through the Oobleck!. Even the staff joined in. Everyone was amazed at how the Oobleck looked like white water, but the properties changed [viscosity] when the students ran through it. So much fun while learning! Thank you Ms Batchler—WE LOVE SCIENCE!

Get on Board Station Tour

Year 9 Students participated in a station tour on Friday 14th September 2018. Students caught the bus to Rockingham Station and the Train to Kwinana whilst listening to a Transperth educator. Students gained more confidence by learning how to use the transport system efficiently and safely.

WE LOVE SCIENCE!

Yr 10

Yr 11

Yr 12/13

Term 3 has been a very busy one. Students have been completing their academic programs as well as being involved in various community activities.

They have had hands on experience taking part in Aboriginal cooking and then tasting these traditional foods, an activity they thoroughly enjoyed. Students have also been cleaning up our beaches in Bushrangers and have taken part in the WADSA physical activity program at the Mike Barnett center. The West Coast Eagles have visited our school on a number of occasions speaking about important

issues—This has been great for our West Coast Eagles supporters! Our students have also been to Fishability, where we have started looking for leadership qualities to appoint mentors from our class for Term 4.

We have introduced our well-being program this Term with students focusing on one well-being strategy each week. They have covered:

Believing in yourself Self-Calming Active Constructive responding Strength of self talk Valuing other people Sleep matters

Mindfulness advantage Research process Empathy and Caring

Next term our Small Business Enterprise program will be selling Christmas labels. Please feel free to order your labels from Room 6.

Be Quick for your Christmas Labels

Several of our year 12 and 13 students have been involved with the Good Samaritan Industries (GSI) School Transition to Employment Program (STEP) throughout the year. Layth, Angel and Jake have been working at GSI in Canning Vale; Layth and Angel at the recycling plant and Jake in the canteen. Chloe has been doing her STEP work at the GSI retail store in Mandurah.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our students where they gain valuable work skills in a supportive environment. We must say a big thank you to GSI for accepting so many of our students into this fabulous program.

STEP Program [School Transition to Employment Program]

Some Yr 11 students have been taking part in an employment and skills program run by The Good Samaritan Industries at Canning Vale. The students have been tutored on goal setting, personal presentation, exploring work options and very soon will learn about transport to and general safety in the workplace.

The students were treated to a tour of the facility where they saw for themselves where the clothing and other items sold at GSI stores are sorted. They also saw how GSI bins are built and how clothing is baled up to send overseas.

Students discovered a delicious, well priced canteen on the site, not to mention a most entertaining video arcade game! - Of course the most entertaining part of the day is always our impromptu ‘car pool karaoke’ sessions on the bus!!

Bush Rangers Lower School

Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 all had the opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of native animals this term. We

enjoyed learning about the snakes and animals from Radical Reptiles and Animal Arc.

Year 7

This term Year 7 Bush Ranger students have been learning about native birds and how they survive the environment. We built nests, used different tools as beaks to catch our food, participated as parent birds in a race to feed our chicks to see the hazards that birds face (each student took turns to be a chick!) and looked at the different types of native birds that are in our local environment.

Unfortunately, we were rained out of our bush walk at our C.A.B.A.T.E excursion but we got to meet a few more interesting animal friends and learn about taking care of wildlife.

Year 8

The Year 8 Bush Rangers have been learning about global warming and how it can affect wildlife. Students created a bottle top art project for the Recreate Waste Art Recycling competition called ‘Plastic Splash!’. Ms Boyd and I were very proud of their group efforts.

Above all it was great to watch the Year 8s work together to start our Paper Recycling Program. As a class, students worked together to collect, weigh and record the paper to be recycled from each year group. Our first collection weighed 16.9 kilograms!

Klive sorting paper for recycling Crystal, Siobhan and Madison creating the artwork ‘Plastic Splash!’

Finished Work

Year 9

This term, Year 9 students have been learning about wetlands, its aquatic macro-invertebrates and the pollution that comes from people. Students identified ‘water-bugs’ and tested the water samples on excursions and looked at the different ways that pollution can get into the wetlands.

Another highlight was the visit from Booyi Culture to assist students in learning about Aboriginal culture and creating some beautiful artwork using Aboriginal symbols. Students have also continued their Adopt-A-Beach program and this will carry on in term 4.

The Year 9s completing a large scale board game about taking care of our water.

Bush Rangers Upper School

Year 12 Mersey Point Rehabilitation

The Year 12 Bush Rangers have planted a total of 820 native plants (sedges and sword grasses) at Mersey Point in the Shoalwater Island Marine Park. Simply WOW! Thank you to Craig Wilson (Coastal and Marine Project Manager) and Rockingham City Council for all you support and planning. Our Bush Rangers have felt a great sense of pride contributing to their local community and look forward to continuing their efforts.

Year 12 Nearer to Nature – Wetland Connections – Star Swamp

We travelled to Star Swamp in August to examine the macro invertebrates (water bugs) found within the swamp. The students had to identify what macro invertebrates (water bugs) they had found, they discussed their pollution sensitivity and concluded their day by testing the quality of the water. It was a lovely day and we would like to thank Richard Olive.

Year 12 Booyi Culture – Bush Medicine

Booyi Culture provided our Bush Rangers with a wonderful introduction to Bush Medicine. They came to understand how our native flora was used both in practical everyday living and as medicine. For example, the paperbark was used as an insect repellant, for skin conditions and as a roof covering when building a mia mia. The Rangers created healing bags from native leaves, bark, seeds and the natural oils released from them. It was a fabulous incursion and would like to thank Booyi Culture.

Year 10 and Year 11 St John Ambulance - First Aid Recruits – Bronze Level

Our Bush Rangers have actively been participating in the St John Ambulance – First Aid Recruits – Bronze Level. They have been working to complete six modules of work ranging from DRS ABCD to how to manage fractures, bleeds and burns. They have participated in role play scenarios to practice their practical skills. Well done Year 10 and Year 11 Bush Rangers.

Our Conservation Project –Beach Clean Ups – AMDI –Term 3 Summary

Rockingham ESC Upper School Bush Rangers have adopted three sections of beach in the local Rockingham Area to remove Marine Debris – Shoalwater Beach in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Safety Bay Beach and Waikiki Beach. We have completed another six clean ups. Our Year 11 Bush Rangers have mentored and worked closely with students from Rockingham Beach Primary School introducing them to our AMDI Beach Clean Up Conservation Project. They have shared experiences at the beach collecting marine debris, identifying hazards and when back at school sorting and recording what they found. We hope this new partnership continues into the future. Congratulations to our Bush Rangers an outstanding effort!

WE have made a difference in our local community.

Calming Minds program Calming minds is an 8 week well-being program that addresses children’s overall wellbeing through movement, mindfulness and meditation. Students will learn tools and techniques to help them experience and develop a skill set to manage underlying thought processes and empower them when facing personal challenges. Each session has a concept which aligns to the Australian Health and Physical Education Curriculum strands. These classes equip students with skills they can use at pivotal points in their schooling journey and equip children with the greatest life tools we can give them. Boys Program An 8 session well-being program for young men called In Real Life: Equip will begin in term 4. The program is fun and interactive, and designed to help young men build their skills in teamwork, resolving conflict, assertive communication and emotional regulation. The program also covers safe use of technology and social media and encourages students to build their support networks. Mentoring Mentoring is designed to provide guidance and support to students who are not only experiencing academic difficulties, but social and emotional hardships. The mentoring programs will be approximately 15 minutes in length and are facilitated in a flexible manner, meaning that the program is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual.

Student Services With Mrs Atkinson

Forging Links with the Community

Work Place Learning “Strengthening community Ties”

The Pop-Up Café students at Gracehaven really made Betty’s day by celebrating her 94th birthday with her. It was a lovely celebration and enjoyed by all.

Associate Principal and VET Corordinator, Ms Caroline Mason, was extended an invitation recently to speak at the Rockingham General Hospital Auxiliary Inc. Annual General Meeting. Ms Mason spoke about the long lasting and important links forged between Elenora’s Café and our school, outlining the advantages and benefits for students [past and present] who participate in Work Experience.

Long Lasting Community Ties

As part of his Work Place Learning Program, student Cory has been sharing his enjoyment and knowledge of puppet making by hosting workshops every Monday for the residents of Baptistcare Gracehaven. He has done an amazing job and we would like to share with you his re-count. Please read overleaf to share Cory’s story…………….

Technology Staff Personal Development

“The school will upskill staff as a continued school focus” Education Assistants at the school have been attending PD workshops with Esmeralda, to upskill and develop new skills on the iPads and Spheros to support student learning. They have been using practical hands on approach and have been working with:- Book Creator, Pic Collage, Kahoot, iMotion, Google Drive, Airdropping, Sphero, Blog, Screen Sharing.

“I started my work placement at 8.40 am by making my way firstly to the Life skills room at school to meet up with Mrs Hamlet to get ready to go to Gracehaven. First off, we practised on what I was going to say to the senior residents and then we rearranged which box the resources go in. Then we needed other resources like scissors, needles, plastic bags, colouring in pens and other materials. When everything was in order, we made out way over to Gracehaven where we had to sign in . We then went to C House to greet the lady and start on what we are going to do. I was helping out with 2 senior ladies and Ms Hamlet was helping with 4 other ladies, we just got on with the lesson. I was helping a nice senior lady to sew, Miss Pam. I was at first trying to teach her how to sew but she could not remember everything I taught her. She was trying but had a rough time remembering, I did the work for her to help out. The other lady was doing fine, she didn't need my help so we just carried on making puppets. Pam and I were having a nice chat for a while but sadly it was time to go, so we packed up , said goodbye and left. After that, we came back to the school and unpacked. We sat down to discuss what we did today”.

WOW—Cory, what an amazing re-count! You have helped make a difference to the residents with your Puppet Making classes and your conversation

skills—WELL DONE :)

A Story by Cory Powley ….continued from previous page

Students have been busy practising their Technology skills. The Year 11s have been working very hard and have created some great videos on their iPads explaining diversity. We hope to share their creations with you very soon by uploading to the website and/or Facebook.

As part of HASS and incorporating Aboriginal Culture into our curriculum, the students at Rockingham Senior High School Education Support Centre, had a taste of not only eating Aboriginal food but also having-a-go at preparing and cooking it. On the 24th August 2018 Marissa and Sandra from Bindi Bindi Dreaming guided the students to in preparing some amazing dishes using traditional bush herbs such as Lemon Myrtle, Sea Parsley, Saltbush and River mint [just to name a few].

Yr 12 Student Jessica should be very proud of herself

[as are we], for taking the initiative to volunteer at

Gracehaven once her Year 12 school ceases.

She will be delivering art classes and assisting in the

hair salon. Jessica will be actively enhancing and

making a difference to the resident’s well-being,

whilst practising her VET skills.

WELL DONE JESS!

Congratulations!
