Membershipby Anke Seifried

Renewing our Membership

Our delightful Registration and Information session at Snow Valley was on October 24.

Thanks to our host, Snow Valley, for providing an excellent venue plus delectable refreshments and even some snow to boost the spirit. My thanks goes to the new and renewing Members who joined us at Snow Valley. I particularly want to thank all the volunteers who manned stations with enthusiasm and skill. The membership card laminator is in intensive care right now. We did get another at the end of the day but those who did not laminate their cards may do so at the Club Dinner on November 28.

New Members and Renewing Members

As of October 25, 2012, we have 40 new Club Members and nearly 300 Club Members have renewed their membership for the next 12 months. There are still 160 potential renewals from last year’s register. If you want your name to appear in the Club Phone list, please send in your Membership Application no later than this November. The Phone list is issued in December containing telephone numbers of those who signed, thereby giving their consent on the Membership Form. Membership Application Forms are on our website seniorsski.com under “Join Us.” Please print, sign and mail to the address on the form with a cheque. We are not set up for Debit or Credit Card transactions.

Welcome to Winter and New Members Day

is scheduled for Tuesday, November 20th, at Snow Valley. We will be introducing the New Members present during coffee break that morning. Lifts start operating at 9:30 AM. The exact extent of activities is snow and weather dependent. We look forward coffee, cookies and a great visit when Welcome New Members day occurs.

We expect to have Demo Skis, which can be tried at no charge, but you have to bring your boots. There will be ski tips from our friendly instructors and we usually have binding checks. In the past, Club Members using the binding check expertise, have been observed making a totally voluntary donation to support Snow Valley’s Community Initiatives Program.

As the snow materializes and plans can be firmed up, we will send out notices and post information on our website seniorsski.com

Tuesdays at Snow Valley

You will find Members skiing at Snow Valley at all times. Tuesdays are specially designated by the Club Members as the day. for meeting, skiing on the hill and gathering in the Lodge for coffee. The first hour after lifts open is usually not busy. Also, the time from 2:30 PM until the early evening is good for being able to pick your route rather than doing the slalom out of necessity.

Rocky Mountain Seniors Ski ClubSnow Valley On-Hill Training

Programs for the 2012-2013 Season

Four programs: Ski, Synchro, Carve and Race. The choice is yours.

Ski:

Never skied before but want to acquire the skills necessary to enjoy those fabulous trips to the mountains? Skied since you were a kid but want that extra boost in efficiency so you can ski straight through from lift opening until closing time at Marmot? Then this program is for you! Snow Valley instructors will help you to get your skiing to where you want it to be. The same instructors will work with you each week throughout the class to enable you to build on what you have learned in the previous weeks.

This program is intended for all skiers, novice through expert. Groups will be created based on participant level of experience and goals. There are two sessions, A and B, each consisting of five classes. Classes are offered on Tuesdays 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm. The price of each session is $70.00 + GST for Snow Valley pass-holders and $110.00 + GST for non-pass-holders, payable directly to Snow Valley guest services at their front desk. Session A dates: 20, 27 November 2012; 4, 11, 18 December 2012. Session B dates: 15, 22 January 2013; 5, 12, 19 February 2013.

Synchro:

Want to play and socialize while you ski? Synchro is almost like dancing on skis. There are faster ways to get to the bottom, but with lots of laughs and almost as many turns, youʼll copy the movements of the leader to create a flowing, unified image. As the leader – and everyone gets a turn – youʼll learn how to ski smoothly and predictably so your team can match your movements. Without much time spent in typical “ski lesson” skill-focused development, participants will learn how to vary their speed and their turns to follow and match a leader, while the leaders will learn how to move smoothly and predictably to be easy to follow. By practicing skiing the way someone else moves youʼll develop versatility to avoid obstacles, and focusing on other skiers while you ski helps develop more awareness of your surroundings – so that snowboarder flying in from the side isnʼt so surprising. Besides, there are a lot of laughs celebrating the beautiful patterns and the ones that didnʼt look quite so good!

This program is intended for all skiers, beginner through expert, as long as youʼre comfortable skiing on Cascade (between the chairlifts). There are three sessions, A, B, and C, each consisting of four classes. Classes are offered Mondays 2:00 - 3:30 pm. The price of each session is $70.00 + GST for Snow Valley pass-holders, payable directly to Snow Valley guest services at their front desk.

Session A dates: 26 November 2012; 3, 10, 17 December 2012. Session B dates: 14, 21, 28 January 2013; 4 February 2013. Session C dates: 25 February 2013; 4, 11, 18 March 2013.

Carve:

Think those metal edges on your skis are purely cosmetic? Or do you think they're reserved for racers only? In either case, prepare to be enlightened and achieve a state of euphoria on snow! Snow Valley instructors (aided by a couple of Club members) will teach you the fundamentals of carving a turn using the edges of your skis. This skill can be applied in all types of turns: wedge through slalom and everything in between. By learning how, when, and how much to engage your edges in your skiing, you will gain significant control in all types of terrain and conditions. Plus, riding those edges is one heck of a lot of fun!

This program is intended for skiers with some prior experience who would like to learn to take advantage of the whole ski. (After all, you paid for the entire ski! Why not use all of it?) Participants should be comfortable skiing on groomed, blue runs, and they should possess a Snow Valley season pass. There are three sessions, A, B, and C, each consisting of seven classes. Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:45 pm - 3:15 pm. The price of each session is $90.00 + GST for Snow Valley pass- holders, payable directly to Snow Valley guest services at their front desk.

Session A dates: 20, 22, 27, 29 November 2012; 6, 11, 13 December 2012. Session B dates: 15, 17, 22, 24 January 2013; 5, 7, 12 February 2013. Session C dates: 14, 19, 21 February 2013; 5, 7, 12, 14 March 2013.

Race:

This program combines the technical skill of carving with the strategic and tactical skills of selecting appropriate turn trajectories and timing in order to successfully and quickly navigate a series of gates on the hill. But you needn't have Olympic aspirations to join the race program. In fact, you needn't even aspire to race at all! The skills you learn in the race program will enable you to quickly take evasive action when that guy on the snowboard cuts across in front of you as well as enable you to deftly negotiate a sequence of gentle moguls off the Paradise Chair at Marmot. But most of all, the race program will hone your skiing technique so that it will be as sharp as your

edges! Snow Valley coaches will provide training both in free skiing and in the gates.

Gate training will begin with small brushes, progressing to knee-high stubbies. Full-length gates will be available for those that want to use them. Most of the work, however, will be in the stubbies, providing an intimidation free environment in which to practice the physical and mental skills necessary for mastering the gates. This program is intended for skiers comfortable with skiing at higher speeds who would like to take their technique up a notch or two. Participation in session A of the Carve program is a prerequisite for participation in the race program as is possession of a Snow Valley season pass. There are two sessions, B and C, each consisting of six classes plus one fun race. Classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:45 pm - 3:15 pm. The price of each session is $90.00 + GST for Snow Valley pass-holders, payable directly to Snow Valley guest services at their front desk.

Session B dates: 15, 17, 22, 24 January 2013; 5, 12 February 2013. Race: 7 February 2013.

Session C dates: 14, 19, 21 February 2013; 5, 7, 12 March 2013. Race: 14 March 2013.

Slalom-specific training is also offered, conditions permitting, on those Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:45pm - 3:15pm when the regular race classes are not held. Slalom training is offered on a pay-as-you-go basis for a price of $15.00 + GST per class for Snow Valley pass-holders, payable directly to Snow Valley guest services at their front desk.

Tentative slalom dates: 18, 20 December 2012; 8, 10, 29, 31 January 2013; 12, 14, 26 February 2013.

Want more information about any of these programs? Please contact Martha at [email protected]. For questions specific to the Synchro program, please contact Larry at [email protected].
