What is a SRD operating in ISM band?

According to the ETSI standard a SRD (Short Range Devices) is a wireless communication device, with frequencies from 25 MHz to 40 GHz, that offer a low risk of interference with other radio services, usually because their transmitted power, and hence their range, is low

The ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) bands are unlicensed frequen- cies regulated by the ITU-R. Most used bands for M2M applications are 433, 868, 915 MHz and 2.4 GHz

Most of M2M Applications require network capabilities and low power consumptions

Why SRD Network in ISM bands ?

When several devices-sensors present in a restricted and defined area have to be connected, the use of a ‘point-to-point’ comunication technology (for istance cellular network) can be not economically profitable

However, when there are many devices-sensors defined areas also spread in a wide area, the two networks shown the full complementarity and provides the best solution when

SRD Products: Make it or Buy it !

Development cost of a simple SRD product in ISM band with networking capabilities can range from ~ 100 to ~ 250 K€ for companies with deep RF desing experiences

DEVELOPMENT COSTS •HW development•SW integration•Test Bench dev. and equipment•Certifications / Homologations•Redesign cost due to Chipset/Standard•After sales and support•Additional production costs•Increased warranty costs•Hidden cost due to lack of RF experience
