This weekend, the week after Pentecost, we celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast has been celebrated by the Church for more than 700 years. It was Pope John XXII (1316-1364) who made this celebration official. The Holy Trinity is one of the great mysteries of our faith. It is the mystery of the identity of God. Who is God? God is one God in three Divine Persons — the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Whether we are aware of this consciously or not, this is something each of us acknowledges in a number of ways, especially when we go to Mass. When we make the Sign of the Cross, as we do many times in Mass, we are making a statement about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In today’s Gospel, we hear The Great Commission from Matthew 28 and, again, the baptismal formula “in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” It unites the baptized with the life of the Blessed Trinity. Jesus, at the end of his earthly ministry, commissioned all disciples (and that means us!) to go into all the world to teach the commandments. And, in accepting the challenge of discipleship, he guarantees his constant presence. As disciples, we are truly blessed.

“Therefore GO and MAKE disciples

of all nations. BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father,

and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

and teaching them to observe all that

I have commanded you. And, behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:16-20

“Every time we make the sign of the cross, we draw closer to God.” Pope Francis

Notice of 2nd Collection on May 26-27, 2018—THIS Weekend / Catholic Communication Campaign

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

The Catholic Communication Campaign helps to tell the world about our faith. It is taken up each year to

provide the funds needed for a variety of projects directed toward strengthening Catholic faith, worship, and

witness. We must use every means available to us to preach The Word to the wider community. With the growth of

all media options, there are now a wide variety of choices in the way we choose to communicate.

This is true of our own Diocese of Reno. In addition to the weekly televised Mass, information about the

Diocese and our faith is available in a variety of formats including the High Desert Catholic magazine and our web

page (www.renodiocese.org). One-half of the proceeds from this collection remain in the Diocese to provide much

needed support to these local communications efforts.

Thank you for your generous support of the Catholic Communications Campaign.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

Celebrating Catholic Education

Reasons to Send your Child To Religious Education

Early Bird registration is open for all religious education classes. But why do I need to sign my kids

up for classes? To help answer that question, we are bringing you reasons our families say that Faith

Formation programs are important to them.

I want my children to have friends at church. This is a great place to make really good friends, and parents typically share the same values. Our

friends play an important role in our lives and the lives of our children. They challenge us, question

us, and influence our decisions. By giving our children an opportunity to discover and nurture

friendships within our faith community, we are enabling them to journey towards a stronger faith,

hand-in-hand with each other.

I want our family to be part of a strong tradition and a caring community. Our church has its roots in Jesus. When Jesus was here, he gathered in community with others,

often around the table. When we gather at Eucharist, it makes a difference when we know the

other people in the pews. Participating in Faith Formation allows us to grow together as one strong,

caring community.

I can’t do this alone. There is so much to know about the Catholic church. Vatican II tells us that, as parents, we are the first and foremost teachers in our children’s lives. It

can be frightening to take on this responsibility alone, especially if we don’t feel as if we know

enough. Our parish community is here to help your family on your faith journey. We offer classes

and support for any age and at all levels. Just contact us!

I want my child to have a strong relationship with God. If we want our children to be good musicians, we sign them up for lessons and encourage them to

practice. If we want our children to become good athletes, we sign them up for sports and encourage

them to practice. Sending the right message: making Religious Education a priority shows your

child how important YOU think it is for them to spend time with God.

We invite you to join us as we move further along our faith journey! Contact Becky Massingill at (775) 831-0490 or [email protected] for more info about our Religious Education & Sacraments Program.

ISSUES OF PEACE & JUSTICE: We presumably celebrate the Trinity always, but today we bring our

attention more fully to The Most Holy Trinity. Likewise, Pope Francis’ new exhortation, a call to renewed holiness, refers to

the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit throughout: “Holiness is … parrhesía: it is boldness, an impulse to evangelize and to leave a

mark in this world. To allow us to do this, Jesus himself comes and tells us once more, serenely yet firmly: ‘Do not be

afraid.’ ‘I am with you always, to the end of the world.’ These words enable us to go forth and serve with the same courage

that the Holy Spirit stirred up in the Apostles, impelling them to proclaim Jesus Christ. Boldness, enthusiasm, the freedom to

speak out, apostolic fervor, all these are included in the word parrhesía…Blessed Paul VI, in referring to obstacles to

evangelization, spoke of a lack of fervor (parrhesía) that is ‘all the more serious because it comes from within.’ How often

we are tempted to keep close to the shore! Yet the Lord calls us to put out into the deep and let down our nets. He bids us

spend our lives in his service. … May we always feel compelled by his love and say with Saint Paul: ‘Woe to me if I do not

preach the Gospel.’ Look at Jesus. His deep compassion reached out to others. It did not make him hesitant, timid or self-

conscious, as often happens with us. ….Let us acknowledge our weakness, but allow Jesus to lay hold of it and send us too

on mission. We are weak, yet we hold a treasure that can enlarge us and make those who receive it better and happier.

Boldness and apostolic courage are an essential part of mission. Parrhesía is a seal of the Spirit; it testifies to the authenticity

of our preaching. It is a joyful assurance that leads us to glory in the Gospel we proclaim. It is an unshakeable trust in the

Faithful Witness who gives us the certainty that nothing can ‘separate us from the love of God.’ We need the Spirit’s

prompting, lest we be paralyzed by fear and excessive caution, lest we grow used to keeping within safe bounds. Let us

remember that closed spaces grow musty and unhealthy. When the Apostles were tempted to let themselves be crippled by

danger and threats, they joined in prayer to implore parrhesía: ‘And now, Lord, look upon their threats, and grant to your

servants to speak your word with all boldness.’ As a result, ‘when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered

together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness.’ … God is

eternal newness. (Gaudete et Exsultate, #129-135).

NEW OPTIONS! SAFE ENVIRONMENT / PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN AWARENESS SESSIONS

The Diocese of Reno is excited to announce that parents, volunteers, and employees in our parishes and schools will now have the option of taking the Protecting God’s Children Awareness Session training online or take a live session with a trained facilitator.

Step-by-step instructions to take the online training or a live training session can be found on the Diocese of Reno Safe Environment page using the following link: http://www.renodiocese.org/documents/2018/4/VIRTUS%20Online%20registration%20instructions_Reno_April%20201 8-1.pdf

The online training will take 60-75 minutes to complete.

Reading 24 monthly bulletins and taking a recertification review will continue to be required for employees and volunteers in both parishes and schools. School employees are to read bulletins for the duration of their employment.

All people are encouraged to read beyond their 24 bulletins because of the value of the content. This is especially true when the constantly changing topic of internet safety is considered. Parents and others can glean pertinent and updated information regarding internet safety, including cyber-bullying, through continued reading of the bulletins.

It is also important to note that background checks are now done online, simultaneously with registering for a live session or when taking an online Awareness Session.

If you need assistance, please contact Elda Juarez at the Diocese of Reno: (775) 326-9445.
