Local ar(st and resident of Rancho Santa Fe, Connie McCoy, painted the image in 2004 while actually listening to the funeral on the radio. Connie says, “At the (me of President Reagan’s death, I was at a ranch in the Sierra Foothills, where President Reagan would frequently visit and ride horses. There was no television at the ranch house, so when the funeral started to be broadcast over the radio, we sat down to listen to it. As the cadence of the drum rolls con(nued I picked up the Fresno Bee newspaper and noted there was a fuzzy photo on the front page of President Reagan’s casket being pulled on a cart by horses with Nancy walking beside it. I grabbed a canvas and immediately started pain(ng the image and con(nued to paint during the en(re funeral service. It was my catharsis or way of working out the grief and emo(on from our na(on losing this wonderful man and leader. Of course, I changed the image quite a bit and edited out traffic, street signs, and photographers to make the image more “poignant.” The original 9” x 12”, oil pain(ng named “Reagan” sold immediately, so Mrs. McCoy had a limited edi(on of gicleés (high resolu(on, color prints on canvas) made to support addi(onal interest. Because of the upcoming Centennial Celebra(on at the Ronald Reagan Presiden(al Founda(on and Library, Mrs. McCoy was mo(vated to donate the framed, enhanced gicleé. The registrar, Jennifer Torres, at the Ronald Reagan Presiden(al Library, explained that the permanent galleries are being renovated so they are closed to the public and won’t reopen un(l February. They are now in the process of determining which ar(facts will be displayed in the new museum and are delighted to have the piece as part of their as as part of their collec(on. Connie McCoy is a long (me member of the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild and has exhibited locally for years. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and presently is studying with Jeff Wa_s at the Wa_s Atelier. A limited edi(on of gicleés are available in the the original 9” x 12” size and the enhanced 18” x 24” size. Rancho  Santa  Fe  Middle  School  Students  Create  Magnificent  Coral  Reef  Mosaic  for  New  School,  by  Dr.  Tim  Lueker

Janis  Reeser’s  7th  and  8th  Grade  students  learned  the  art  of  mosaic  making  as  part  of  a  guest  ar(st  program  this  spring.  The  goal  of  our  project  was  to  create  a  9    by  5  foot  coral  reef  mosaic  in  6  sec(ons  to  be  installed  on  the  new  Rowe  School.  Our  project  was  supported  by  Superintendent  Lindy  Delaney,  who  requested  that  we  produce  artwork  created  by  students  for  the  new  school.  The  middle-‐school  students  had  been  studying  coral   reefs   this   year,   so   we   held   an   in   class   design   compe((on   to   determine   the   layout   for   our   reef,  including  sea  grass  and  open  water.  The  students  then  designed  their  favorite  inhabitants,  determined  the  proper  colors  and  textures,  and  then  with  my  guidance  and  assistance  created  their  subjects  and  installed  them  on  the  reef  using  an  assortment  of  stone,  (le  and  glass.  The  students  were  supervised  by  myself,  Mrs.  Reeser,  and  also  by  Debbie  Holder,  who  acted  as  my  assistant  mosaicist.

Following  is  a  list  of  the  students  who  worked  on  the  mosaic  and  their  subjects:

Olivia  Berger    Cleaner  Wrasse,  Surgeon  Fish,  Sponge  Shea  Botkiss    Starfish,  Branching  Coral  Lilly  Budano    Picasso  Trigger  Fish,  Grouper,  Sponge  Alexandra  Carter  Shark,  Humphead  Wrasse  Michel  De  La  Rosa  Pufferfish,  Clownfish  with  Anemone  Jackson  Fiser    Sea  Urchin,  Schooling  Fish  Ashley  Goetz    Sweetlips,  Dolphin  Jordyn  Klein    Giant  Clam,  Brain  Coral  Chanel  Leavi_    Nudibranch,  Sea  snail,  Coral  Ka(e  Michel    Trumpet  Fish,  Octopus,  Coral    Sabrina  Sahney  Moorish  Idols,  Coral  Reef  Liza  Schoelen    Sea  Turtle,  Red  Snapper  Alexi  Stein    Moray  Eel,  Squid  Renzo  Vajda      Grouper,  Christmas  Tree  Worm  Dr.  Tim      Yellow  Tail  Damselfish  (juvenile)

The   students   obviously   enjoyed   the   mosaic   making   process,   and   the   final   result   exceeded   all   our  expecta(ons!  The  students  were  a  pleasure  to  work  with  and  I  look  forward  to  our  next  mosaic  project  at  school.  The  Reef  is  currently  on  display  along  with  other  mosaics  at  a  group  mosaic  show  at  Encinitas  City  Hall.  More  informa(on  and  pictures  can  be  found  at  www.dr(mfineart.com.
