Proposal For my photo essay assignment I have chosen to photograph hands. I have decided to shoot hands because they can convey a series of emotions without direct facial expression. Also, they are individual yet similar enough to make a series of photos. My design idea for this photo essay is to take pictures of hands that contrast each other. For example, I will take photos of old working hands and young hands. On approaching this task I will begin by finding subjects that will demonstrate the emotions I am trying to project in my photographs. I will then find the correct lighting and setting, preferably a plain background so the hands are the focal point. Next I will take several test photos to confirm the lighting and setting is correct. And then I will shoot my photos. After my photos are taken I will select the most desirable ones and mount them in a respectable presentation. Lastly I will title each photo and write a final paragraph describing the story I am trying to tell with my photos.
Speaking With Hands
Words can tell stories, but it’s our actions that speak to other people. Our hands convey our emotions in a way our words cannot. They describe our journeys, our struggles,
and our success. When we our born our hands are soft and small and weak. We are vulnerable to the world. As we age
we change, as do our hands. The lines on our palms become deeper, just as the experiences we go through
deepen in meaning. Our hands become scarred, but become stronger with every scar they endure. Hands can show hatred towards others, they can beat and they can kill. But hands can also be responsible for something
greater. Hands can love. They can treat a wound, wipe away tears and give someone something to hold on to. Words can
tell stories, but our hands, they can truly speak.
