ROUND 7 PREVIEWS SOUTH GAMBIER V NORTH GAMBIER Some folks are suggesting these two teams will fight it out for this year’s Holy Grail. No doubting North’s credentials, but the Demons have four other clubs lurking that could rain on their rose garden. Coach Duncan will be happier than a tick on a fat dog if South can repeat the A Grade effort they put in against West last outing. The Tigers are the best in the business at the two book ends of the arena, but The Phant reckons the one area that South could gain a win is in the midfield with the likes of O’Neil, Howie, Berky the Elder etc. But even so I think the Ds will pull up a little short in the sprint to the clocktower. North by 20 points CASTERTON V EAST GAMBIER East finally displayed a bit more bite than bark against North with arguably their best four quarter effort this year. On the downside, very sad to see veteran Dog Cootie in his first 2013 appearance limp to the bench with a broken wing before the first change. The Catters don’t yet have the finishing polish of North or South, but as each week passes improvement is evident, and I feel they are starting to sniff the sweet scent of September in the air. FROM THE JUNGLE Much has been said about their drive ins, but they have also unearthed some great young local talent with the likes of Carlin, Currie and co. This is a big game on many fronts, but I think the Cats will be purring come crunch time. Casterton by 19 points WEST GAMBIER V MILLICENT West claim they had an unavailable list longer than the queue at a Myer post Christmas sale last time out, but even so a 15 goal drubbing at home was disappointing. One question lingers, will we see Tommy Holmes back in the red and blue strip this year? One of these sides will probably miss playing finals football in 2013, and I reckon this game could come back to haunt the club that doesn’t make the cut. The Saints welcomed back a couple of old gunfighters last week. Still haven’t seen the best of Jonny Agnew this year, if he fires up I think West might be in more strife than a caterpillar after a cold winter. It has been an interesting time with the start of the 2013 Western Border Junior Football season. With the switch to just Under 14s and three divisions of Under 12’s playing on Sunday, it has meant a sleep in for most people compared to last year The player numbers are still very strong, particularly in the younger grades. This has resulted in a number of clubs fielding two teams in the 12C’s and 12B’s competition.

In the Under 14s we have the four Mount sides contesting, what is our only premiership battle. Unfortunately Millicent weren’t able to get an Under 14 team up this year – but hopefully next year this might change and when you look at the results from the 12As they will be a force to reckon with. East and South are heading the table, both with only one loss each. Although the competition is tighter than the ladder suggests, as North had a good win over South last weekend. While East was made to work hard to record a narrow 13 point win against West.

As mentioned earlier Millicent’s junior programme is certainly paying dividends as they are very strong in the under 12s this year. They are certainly the standout across the three divisions. Having said this, the Mount clubs are generally dividing the talent to ensure that as many kids get the opportunity to play footy as possible. The end result, is that we hopefully will have large numbers of players moving through the ranks over the coming years to the Senior clubs .

I must take the opportunity to congratulate a number of our local players for receiving personal accolades over the last week. Firstly, congratulations to all those players who represented the area with a week in Adelaide for the SAPSASA carnival – it’s a great privilege to play representative footy at any age. From this carnival both Luke Bull & Beau Nunan were selected in the Team of the Carnival. On top of this 3 boys were asked to attend a try-out game on the Sunday for the State U12 Football side – they were Beau Nunan, Henri Capewell and Lachie Jones . Unfortunately Lachie just missed out but both Beau and Henri will be representing South Australia in Darwin during August. A big achievement for both the boys and an indication of the strength of the Junior program down here.

Congratulations to all players who represented the WBFL at the South East Junior Football Carnival played in Naracoorte and Kybybolite last Sunday. The Under 17s, coached by Richard O’Grady with assistance from Jason Dawe, made an emphatic statement from the outset, holding the KNTFL goalless for the first half before comfortably claiming the inaugural Duncan Shield. The Under 15s, under the guidance of Andrew Close, made short work of the KNTFL before pushing the combined Glenelg FC team in the final. The fierce attack on the ball by our boys was a highlight.Over at Kybybolite Jamie Parsons was in charge of the Under 14s, who were very competitive in both their matches. Thanks to all volunteers who assisted throughout the journey, particularly trainer John Arthurson who was chief medico at both venues. And well done to all the players for their outstanding behaviour and attitude, on and off the field.

Firstly, the long awaited news from A Grade coach.. Amy Cram !! Congrats to Amy and Logan on the arrival (finally!!) of their new son Bohdi. We wish them all the best and look forward to meeting him round the club soon. Last week we had Mollie represent WB in Adelaide – well done to this team on finishing Runners Up. Two weeks ago when we hosted South we had another milestone celebrated, with Kristyn Dawe playing her 150th game for West against her old club. Well done to Kristyn, after a few glitches along the way, to be able to make it to 150. Results: As went down by 9, with Lisa again leading the way, and Brit having another solid game. The A res girls had a 10 goal win with Kahli showing she hasn’t lost any of her touch and Lauren also in the best. B Gr also had a 10 goal win, with Sammi and Chloe getting the side’s best. C gr were back on the winners list having a 20 goal win. Best players 150 gamer Kristyn and Bec having an awesome game. The 17’s went down in a cliffhanger, losing by 3. Best players Sam and Maddy T. Coach Jodie and the 15’s celebrated their first win, 29-15. Well done to Georgia H and Maddy H for winning the awards. Must be the extra Sunday morning workouts paying off !! 13’s were up against the top team, who were a pretty slick unit. Best players Maggie and Eliza. Lastly our littlies went down, but certainly showed how much they have improved since the first meeting. Best player awards to Emily Dawe and Paris Ingley.

Welcome to Malseed Park, where today we can see our Mighty Roo Boys take on The Millicent Saints. If recent history tells us anything, it tells us that the seniors result will be breathtaking. Really looking forward to seeing our on ball brigade use our big ground to its advantage and run with the ball, deliver it to our exciting forwards, and watch them kick goals from anywhere. Looking forward to seeing our big boys down back get in, win possession and spread, rebounding quickly and looking after each other. The reserves deserve their first win, but like Clint Eastwood said: “Deserve aint got nothing to do with it”. The only way we can get over the line is hard work, listen to the coach and follow instruction. Should be a cracker game though so get behind them I will back our under 17’s to win today even though Jacka put twenty on them (at the moment he couldn’t pick Black Caviar in the Penola cup). I watched this game at Millicent last round and enjoyed watching how the under 17’s went about it. Some tough kids there. The under 15’s can get another win today and with good footballers like Bronte Aberle, Jacko Lock, Ryan Hosking, Beckman Jr, running around all looks good for the future. I have predicted 4 from 4 in the footy today so don’t make me look stupid. We have some fun nights at the club coming up so look at the calendar and keep these nights free, you will see the Malseed cup coming up to, and ask anyone that has been and they will tell you its a great night and to stay away from anything Jacka picks. Congratulations to Justine Brown, Deb Redman and Ange Turner for completing their Level 1 Umpires Course with Dusty-Rae from Netball SA. These girls are continuing to work towards getting their C Grade badge and the club is thrilled to have members furthering their umpiring skills. congratulations to Isabelle Tuner, Madi Turner, Sophie Ferguson, Alanah Craig, Keah Lynch, Zoe Brown, Alex Walker, Lucy Walker and Melinda Squire for representing the WBNA in last weekend’s Country Champs. Most of us enjoyed having the long weekend off and are refreshed for today’s games against West Gambier. Last week’s awards winners were; A: Pip Ellis – Heaven on a Hanger, Melinda Squire: Pierina’s. A Res: Lynette Shanks - Rural Living, Jesse bowman - Heaven on a Hanger. B: Kaitlyn Murphy – Pierina’s, Tayla Kelly - Rural Living, C: Karla Werchon - Colour Inn, Anna Lonergan - Rural Living, 17’s: Emily Rayner - Coastal Treasures, Sally Houlihan - Laura and Vicki’s. 15’s: Natalie Tilley -Fasta Pasta, Alex Walker - Colour Inn. 12 A – Kayleigh Taylor -Hungry Jacks, Nicole Moran - Coastal Treasures. 12B – Mia Grant - Toy Kingdom, Madi Haggett - Coastal Treasures. Thanks to all of the netballers and footballers who assisted at last weekend’s Millicent & District Gala Day. We have many volunteers in our club who give up their time each week so that we can have a game of football and netball and we want you to know that your hard work is noticed and appreciated! Good luck to all today and may we come home with some wins. GO SAINTS

Trust is something we rely on, for one, your coach trust’s you to train hard and have a fair dip every week. You trust your best mate taking your wife and kids to Adelaide but somehow question him using your chainsaw? How do you know that when you get a schooner of beer that the glass is clean or the beer is correctly made, you just trust that it is? When you get your burger and chips how many chips has the employee licked? So who do you absolutely trust? Religions? Allah, Budda, Garry Ablett or dodgy reverse collar wearing old men that reek of mothballs? Car Salesmen? 1 owner with books, an old lady only drove it to bowls on Saturdays, yeah right. You trust that when you fill your car up that the bowser is correct and you have got your full 60 litres? Politicians? What a joke, the people running our country give us all these promises and policies and when they get elected they just do whatever they like no questions asked? How does this happen when they should be the most trusted people in the land. You’re Dentist? Your L6 needs a porcelain veneer with triple root canal treatment on your C 29 Incisor and are you gunna know the difference? The Doctor? when you hear the snap of that glove just before the prostate check he is very trustworthy but how come both his hands are on your shoulders? The Foreign clothes that you’re wearing, what chemicals and materials were used and do you think the person being paid 18 cents an hour is making them with love and understanding? Do you trust yourself to eat only 2 Tim Tams or only have 1 glass of wine? Your partner? Well stop questioning them if you do! I have narrowed it down to the old lady selling Cakes, Jam and Chutney at a stall, you can trust that it’s going to taste terrific! Neil Brown

We certainly knew the first day of winter had arrived when we made the journey over to Millicent a couple of weeks ago. C grade, B grade and 17s all had comfortable victories. It was very pleasing to see the 12s and 15s improve their scores from the first encounter with Millicent. A and A Reserve were beaten by very strong combinations. A: 48-79. Flowers From Me to You – Marlee Gartlan, Casterton Pharmacy – Natalie Rhook. A Res: 35-51. Dergholm Hotel – Sharna Fidler, Ladies Committee – Emily Milich. B: 63-43. Ladies Committee – Chloe Pratt, Hairwize – Kate Bruce-Smith. C: 47-32. Glennys Takeaway – Morgan Hamill, Milly’s – Jess Pollard. 17U: 48-13. Kelpie Country Café – Abbey Shannon, Herbert’s Bakery – Allie Gorman. 15U: 22-32. Spill the Beans – Emily Humphries, Ladies Committee – Alyssa Humphries. 12U: 10-37. Faroe’s Newsagency – Bailey Gibbs, Kelpie Country Café – Chelsea Galpin, Faroe’s Newsagency – Claire Foster. We were well represented in the Western Border Netball Associations 17 and under representative team that competed in the SA Country Championships over the long weekend. Congratulations to Abbey Shannon, Claire Outtram, Tori Perry and coach Leanne Outtram. So after a week’s rest we welcome East Gambier to Island Park. Let’s work hard today to get a few more wins than we did in our first game against East. GO CATS!

After another week off East venture to Casterton today for some tough competition in Netball. A grade will be fighting still for their first win after a tough defeat from North 2 weeks ago. A reserve girls had has some work to do, and hopefully with some rest these girls can come back fighting, but have some hard opposition to up stand. The B grade has a terrific win against North, showing them just how hard and determined they are to make it to the top. Show Casterton what you’re made of this week. The C grade girls have been striving away with help from some fill-ins. A big thank you to Tarsh McCallum and Kirby Lepley for running the middle against North, without your help and the juniors girls there probably wasn’t going to be a C grade team. With some injured players back this week, let’s work as the team we started as to keeps the wins on the board. 17’s have been unstoppable, but with Casterton being strong in the competition it’s not going to be a walk in the park for these girls. Work together and play your own style of game. 15’s are coming off a fantastic win against North considering they drew last time, so keep climbing girls when you take on Casterton today. 13’s also had a wonderful win against North, but have the bye today. The 12A and 12B teams had very stiff competition against North, but once again we can see the smiles on your faces that you are all having a good time, and that is always the aim.....have fun! Special mention to all girls from East who represented Western Border in Adelaide over the long weekend. Congratulations!

It doesn’t get much better weather for football than what is planned for this weekend when we head across to Casterton in what is traditional cat and dog fighting match. I’m sure with the week’s rest to celebrate the April Birthday of our Queen the dogs will look to continue what was good form against North. Well done to our junior players that played interleague on the weekend with many East Gambier names filtering through the 3 sides U15’s Todd Lockwood, Brady Biggs & Tyson Sneath, showing why they have had A-grade opportunities this year in the U17’s Harry Walters & Jack Dawe. In what will be a menacing sign for opposition U15 teams in the next couple of years is the number of players who made the U14 team most of which have played U15 in Reece Lillecrapp, Brodie Parsons, Blayke Mc Millan, Brodie Clark, Marcus Murphy, Zac Watson & Zion Young. Casterton has always been a fierce competitor on-field and a great club off-field but in a town best known for its quality farm dogs, looking forward to the dogs taking away the wins. Go doggies!

It is a fading memory but the round six clash with West Gambier was certainly a good one for a couple of our teams. The A grade was able to reverse its opening round result against the Roos with one of its best performances of the season thus far. The attack line was clinical and really looked after the ball, while defensively we really shut down their opportunities and it was a well deserved victory. But of course the story of the day was the 17 and under girls that secured the club’s first victory at this age group in two and a half years. Skipper Demi led from the front with her best performance ever for the club, while Gemma, Alex Kenny and Abby created plenty of turnovers to ensure South always kept the lead. It snuck back to level a few times but the girls rallied. Megan and Jacinta were determined through the mid court and looked after the ball beautifully, while Nat was instrumental in the first half with her pace and sure delivery. Latch was also critical in the second half when she came on, getting some critical touches and working hard to help the girls bring the ball safely down court. She was even disciplined!!!!!! Alex Reilly was also a key, combining well with Demi and pulling in the rebounds on any missed shots. It was just reward for the girls, who have been working hard and improving with little result on the scoreboard. Well done. Big thanks too, to Em Gazzard, Lucy Lock and Latchy for helping waitress at the footy club’s goods& services auction. Much appreciated on what was a successful night for our footballers.

Another trip to Malseed Park last round saw us come away with three wins out of the four games. The Under 15’s were the first to celebrate after maintaining a slight lead on their opposites, the final quarter saw the boys jump out to a three goal lead and took the game by 21 points. Jack Capewell led with 5 goals and Dylan Ridding was named best on field. The Under 17’s took the stage next and were up against a very in form West side. West were strong in defence stopping our boys from scoring during the third quarter and only one point in the fourth. The final siren saw West take the game buy 35 points. The Reserves more than made up for the 17’s with a 10 goal lead at the final break building to a final win of 102 points. Peter Harten showed the way with 6 goals and was backed up on the field by Scott Enderl. The Seniors took a similar note leaping away to a 7 goal lead at half time and 12 goal lead at three quarter time. The final quarter was a bit slower but the build up still let us take away the win by 15 goals. Goals were shared around with 9 kickers including Brett Exelby with 5, Brad Cordy and Ash Bryant with 3, and Simon Berkefeld, Brett O’Neil and Tyson Currie with 2. Brett O’Neil, Brad Bryant and Simon Berkefeld were all named best on ground. Good luck today to the boys taking on ladder leaders North. North have been strong all year and will take a lot of work to overcome.

Welcome back everyone and we hope you enjoyed your weekend off from the netball and football and had a chance to re-charge the batteries ready for some tough competition again today. We also hope all our girls from North that represented the league had a wonderful experience in Adelaide last weekend. It is a fantastic oppor tunity to see how other teams in the State are faring and hopefully you were able to take away lots of new tricks to try in your future games. Today we venture to South and look forward to some competitive games across all grades. Here are the results and best players from 2 weeks ago when we played East at home:- A Grade: 68-43 Ashlee (Shadows) & Brianna (Fasta Pasta), ARes: 65-28 Christie (Gambier City Chemmart) & Tanya (Spor tscene), B Grade: 37-61 Georgia (Shadows/Wine) & Catherine (Active8), C Grade: 37-59 Ashleigh (Squashbrook) & Tarsh (Café Belgiorno), 17/Under: 37-33 Tammy (Subway) & Meg (Active 8), 15/Under: 33-53 Emma (OK Pie Shop) & Amber (Civic Video), 13/Under: 41-47 Georgia (Video Ezy) & Sarah (Red Rooster), 12/Under A: 44-5 Jess (OK Pie Shop) & Emily (Hungry Jacks), 12/Under B: 16-1 Tara (McDonalds) & Lili (Red Rooster). All the best to all teams and players for today

Well I hope everyone enjoyed the break last weekend and have come back fresh and ready to go. Two weeks ago saw our lights being used for the first time at senior level, and what a huge success this was with a large crowd there to witness the tiger cage being lit up. The sponsors tent was bursting at the seams, which turned out to be a roaring success which gets bigger every year, well done Tony Kelly. The football was50/50 with two out of four wins on offer and East in the seniors certainly came to play. Our under 15s have been up against it so far this year but keep showing up and having a crack. Best players Brad Close, Kynan Baker, Christian Magracia, Nic Brown, Tom Brookes, Will Nankivell. Our under17s had a game I am sure they would rather forget about luckily this is another day and another challenge. Best players Jordan Mansell, Thomas Flett, Sam Stafford, Ben Bruhn, Matty Mcinerney. The reserves put the afternoon back on track with a resounding win against the Bulldogs. Best players Matty Hensel, Stevie Mcinerney 5 goals, Sam Whelan making goat tracks up and down the ground, Liam Downs-Wooley, Jack Roughana, Kevin Opperman. The seniors always looked like winning but gave there opponents a good sniff something not to get used to. Best Michael Quirk, Brad Stafford, Troy Hosking, Callum Hudson having a great year, Patty Perry. Today we head to the wide expanses of Blue Lake Sports Park which should suit the roaring Tigers pace and run and quick ball use. All the best today Go Tiges

LANDCAREVICTORIA

What is a catchment?

Geographically a catchment is an area of land that drains to a single low point such as

a gully, creek or river.A large catchment may be made up of a series of smaller sub-catchments and these are

made up of soil, water, air and vegetation. Together theses elements support life and

make up an ecosystem that within it has cycling of nutrients and other elements. Each

component is linked, so when one changes it has an effect on the other elements.

What is Integrated Catchment Management?

Integrated Catchment Management is a coordinated approach to the management of

natural resources. It is the integration of land, water, vegetation and other biological

resources for use in a sustainable, balanced way. ICM draws together all members of

the community to effectively manage the catchment in an integrated and holistic way.

ICM fosters joint action by all sectors of the community in an effort to co-ordinate the

problems and solutions within a catchment.Catchment Strategy – The Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Regional Catchment Strategy will be

built into a catchment management plan. The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative defines ICM as “a process through which people can

develop a vision, agree on shared values and behaviors, make informed decision and

act together to manage the natural resources of their catchment”.

This could be a commitment by the community and agencies of the catchment where

the overall aim could be that while addressing stream flows and stream health, to halt

the increase of salt and silt discharging from Fiery Creek and Salt Creeks and to reduce

overall salinity and silting in Lake Bolac. The adoption of the ICM approach is increasingly regarded as the most effective way

of dealing with environmental issues. ICM takes a ‘whole of systems’ approach and

avoids dealing with issues in isolation. It also recognizes the important role played by the

community in managing natural resources and advantages, such as increased mutual

understanding and effectiveness that results from a genuine partnership between

community and government.

In The PoolThe Swimmers compete

in soaring temperatures

at the House Swimming

Carnival. The skies were bright blue as the colourful

procession of red, blue, yellow and green

made its way noisily to the pool. The

chanting had begun already and the scene

was set for a day of heated competition

in the water. Mr Grigg was looking tense

as students entered the grounds and the

other houses turned their attention to

breaking, finally, Laidlaw’s record of too

many successive victories at the House

Swimming Carnival.

The day began with the diving events.

The standard continues to improve,

and it reflects the efforts Mrs Horne

has put into training the competitors.

This year the Diving cup was won

by Berry. As the ropes returned to

the pool to signal the beginning of

the races, the weather was growing

steadily hotter. Eager groups of

students retreated to the shade of the

‘tents’ and the staff performing duties

as judges and timekeepers looked

increasingly uncomfortable. Nothing,

however, seemed to take away from

the spirit of the day! The Year 12 cheer

squads excelled themselves and it

was not surprising that many had lost

their voices by the time the last event

had been swum.

The scores were close all day and

there were some amazing individual

efforts. Age group championships

were awarded to Anastasia Hamill,

Mitchell Godfrey Smith, Nina

Wootton, Jared Rieger, Robyn Sleigh,

Conrad Hamill, Anna Brown, Tom

Nolan and Jarrod Simons, Anna

Burger, Rodney Evans, Brigid

Godfrey Smith and Drew Dreary. As

the last pennant was presented, the

crowds gathered under the shade of

the trees grew quiet. Would Laidlaw

finally be vanquished? Their girls

performed so well that the blue house

was announced as quite a comfortable

winner of the Girls’ Aggregate. What

could the boys do? Young House

emerged victorious in the Boys’.

Aggregate and the pressure mounted –

but to no avail. Laidlaw once again held

the trophy for the Grand Aggregate

high!

It was again a most enjoyable and

smoothly run day. Miss Waldron

and the Physical Education staff had

worked tirelessly to make it a great

success!

Many successes at the

GSSSA Carnival.Only seven days later, a large team

of our most successful swimmers

returned to the Hamilton Pool to

compete against the region’s schools

in the GSSSA Carnival. Once again

the spirit and enthusiasm of the

squad was evident as the day began

with the diving. Amanda Horne,

Declan Murphy and Anna Burger

each won their events and put us in

strong position early in the day. The

freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke,

butterfly and medley races followed

and more victories were recorded

as Mitchell Godfrey Smith, Samuel

Winter-Cooke, Jandre Slabbert,

Rodney Evans, Megan McIntosh,

Alice Langley, Jack Baring, Jared

Rieger, Brigid Godfrey Smith and

Drew Deary all touched the wall first

in their respective events. Our relay

teams also performed very well.

At the end of the day, our Swimming

Captains, Brigid Godfrey Smith and

Fergus Harpley, proudly accepted the

trophies for the Diving and the Boys’

Aggregate. We came second in the

Grand Aggregate. Collandrian 20071

Forty six swimmers

sompete in the city at

the ICCES Carnival. The ICCES swimming was held at

Nunawading on the 14th of March this year.

A reasonably large team of 46 swimmers

took the long journey to Nunawading to

compete. This was a great opportunity

for all of our swimmers to compete

against much bigger schools and many

state representatives.

As our team quickly found out, the

standard was quite amazing at this

carnival but they certainly held their

heads high. There were a number of very

good results with the highlight being

David Andrivon’s second in the year 9

freestyle C. There were also some very

pleasing third placings for the following

students, Nina Wooton - year 7 freestyle

C, Tess Upstill - year 9 freestyle C, Brigid

Godfrey Smith - year 12 breaststroke,

Georgie Upton - year 8 freestyle D, Will

Collins - year 9 freestyle D and the Year

9 freestyle relay consisting of Conrad

Hamill, Jandre Slabbert, Will Collins and

David Andrivon.

The team arrived home weary but satisfied

with their efforts and appreciative of the

work done by Miss Waldron in training

the competitors and organising the trip.
