50 Years

Serving the Communities ofMount Prospect & Prospect Heights In the 1980’s, the park district’s surroundings began to change rapidly. Kensington Business Center, Tree Farm Estates along with Rob Roy Country Club Village began development. The park district also took over the operation

of the driving range. As a result, the park district’s income from its tax base and fee revenue almost doubled. The original parks consisted of Aspen, Burning Bush,

Sycamore, Tamarack and Woodland Trails. The new parks that were added during 1980-1989 to the district were Evergreen, Maple, Willow and Rob Roy Golf Course. In 1983 the driving range was moved north in Woodland Trails Park and expanded. An 18 hole miniature golf course was also constructed. In 1987, the park district built the Marvin S. Weiss Community Center in Woodland Trails Park. This included a full-size gymnasium, a preschool room, a dance room, fi tness club, meeting/multiple purpose rooms, locker rooms and offi ces. Marvin S. Weiss Community Center is still the largest and busiest park district facility.

The 1990’s were a decade of reconstruction and updating. The district started to grow and was in project mode as it met the demands of the community. In 1994, the new Rob Roy Golf Clubhouse was opened. The original clubhouse was a 140 year old farmhouse, the new clubhouse included a pro shop, offi ces, a bar, restaurant and banquet/meeting room. In 1997, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources awarded Woodland Trails with the “Award of Excellence”, which only ten parks throughout the state were presented with this honor. 1997, the park district purchased the Administrative Building on 401 E. Camp McDonald Road. The renovation of Burning Bush Trails began in June of 1997 and reopened in April of 1998. 1999 was a year of planning. A park district wide survey was taken to gather input. From this information, a plan for the future direction of the park was in development for a new century.

MESSAGE

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORSummer is here! Summer is the time to get out of the house, to be free, to be involved, to be active or just TO BE! It is time to unplug ourselves from the lure of electronics that we often depend on to get us through the bleak winter months. Summer offers so many opportunities to play, have fun and reconnect AND the River Trails Park District is here to help celebrate the summer season!

MEETING FRIENDS AND CREATING MEMORIES!There are still openings in our summer camp that offer a wide range of activities for all youth. A child develops social skills, problem solving and creativity through early play experiences. Summer Camp offers our youth opportunities to be active, stimulate and enhance intellectual growth and develop new friendships and experiences!

River Trails Park District is celebrating 50 years and with that comes our summertime special events! Join us on June 6 for our Summer Splash Bash at Woodland Trails Pool and our party in the park at the 50th Anniversary Bash on August 1. Don’t forget our Old Fashioned Family Picnic in the Park on Labor Day. The Park District Team has put together some creative and entertaining opportunities forall to enjoy.

I cannot imagine a better way to optimize the benefi ts of recreation than through the use of the pool at Woodland Trails Park. Swimming is an outstanding activity for people of all ages. Woodland Trails Pool offers so many great amenities, open swim hours and special events. Don’t forget about Our Learn to Swim Program, which offers an essential life skill that everyone should have.

Projects in ActionMaple Trails Park will continue getting a facelift with the pathways being resurfaced and the playground is being replaced summer of 2015.

Woodland Trails Park has creek work being completed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. The stream banks near all three bridges in the park are being stabilized to prevent destructive erosion that has been happening. This is being done through a grant and not only saves River Trails Park District well over $100,000 but also will be a wonderful environmental enhancement. This project is a little shocking due to the removal and clearing that needed to be done around the bridges, 95% of which was invasive, rotted, or diseased vegetation. Once the contractors fi nish installation and bank planting, the Park District will put in several trees.

We look forward to seeing you out this summer! Come check out the benefi ts of reconnectingwith your park district.

The Benefi ts of Recreation are Endless BRET FAHNSTROM, CPRP, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

pHiloSopHy our Trail Blazers program is a developmentally appropriate program designed to help children grow and learn in a stimulating and nurturing environment. We look at the ‘whole child’ including intellectual, social, emotional, physical and creative growth. Children develop differently in each area so the curriculum is carefully planned to include activities that help each child learn and grow in all areas. Children will be introduced to the basic academic and social skills of preschool and will be encouraged to develop problem solving skills, self-confidence and creativity. Activities will include math, science, language skills, art, motor movement, music and dramatic play. All areas of each child’s growth are important and we provide opportunities for intellectual, social, physical and creative growth. Activities are presented in individual and group, structured and unstructured settings. Our goal is for each child to develop a love of learning, tools to continue to learn and a positive image of himself or herself.

Step2 If you already have the basics of golf down and want to improve your swing for more distance and accuracy, our instructor will guide you to the next level. Swing, short game and putting will be covered.

Besides covering all aspects of your game, the instructor will help you with whatever part of the game you feel is giving you problems. We’ll not only prepare you to play on a course, we’ll hold 1 class with actual play on the Rob Roy Golf Course.

Jackie has been a long time employee of the district serving in many roles. She started as a parent volunteer coach for us, has worked floor hockey, little sluggers, pickle ball, Kid Squad, Birthday Parties, then has gone from Archery & Dodgeball Instructor to Trip Bus Driver. If that was not enough, she more recently has been filling in as the Senior Coordinator. Her list never ends! Jackie’s willingness to help out in any way makes her a valuable member of the River Trails team. She is able to successfully work with participants of all ages in different environments and quickly becomes well-liked and respected by all participants. She enjoys the trips as well and really listens to the feedback given by our participants. She

goes above and beyond what is expected and is a pleasure to have around. She is a well admired instructor which helps get participants to return every season. Jackie’s efforts in multiple areas make her a great selection for Employee of the Season!
