What you can expect…

The Art of Outdoors strives to capture beauty and art from the outside. Whether it’s pictures taken from a nature trail, or the outside architecture of a building,

being outdoors is simply beautiful. It’s not all about what an object is, but more of

how it looks, and what elements make up this form of art. This magazine forces you

to ask questions like: Why is this park bench art? How are these trees symmetrical?

What principles of design apply to this garden? This magazine will also train your eyes to notice art in things that you didn’t

view as art beforehand. You will learn about the principles and elements of design

through The Art of Outdoors because it focuses on these principles and elements in regards to the “outside world”, and helps

anyone who enjoys the outdoors understand how these elements and principles work

together to create art. I guarantee if you love outdoors and can appreciate art in different forms, The Art of Outdoors

magazine is for you! 4

About the Editor…

Montina O’Sha Russell is a Senior at East Carolina University where she is majoring in birth-Kindergarten education, but has a fond love of being outdoors and capturing art in the form of photography. The interest that Montina has in being outdoors all started when she was growing up in the outskirts of the small country town of Mount Olive, NC, and her father would landscape the yard with beautiful flowers and arrange them in unique patterns that were eye-catching. Over the years Montina developed and eye for beauty and art that was outdoors. Montina began buying cameras and snapping pictures of anything that she thought was art, and with hard work she became the senior graphic designer for “Roc House Entertainment”, where she created the famous outdoors logo that is still used today. After taking elective courses at East Carolina University in art and photography, Montina has learned to capture beauty and art in almost anything! The Art of Outdoors magazine is a preview of what is to come for Montina and her career. ENJOY!

Straight Horizontal

These park benches are located at the Town Commons. The way the wood planks are put together represent straight horizontal line.

Straight Vertical

These flag poles located at the Town Commons represent straight vertical lines. The flag poles are tall and represent strength in honor of war veterans that served this country.

Curved Flowing

This is an excellent example of curved., flowing lines. This pathway at the Town Commons between the grassy land flow throughout the park, without being too narrow.

Curved Tightly

This is a sculpture from in front of the Art Building on campus. This sculpture represents lines curved tightly because the lines that create this sculpture bend in really tightly and the sculpture is curved inward.

Surface Quality Real

This picture was taken at Art Building on ECU’s main campus. This photograph represents surface quality real texture because you can feel the bricks and the space between them and they create real texture.

Implied Texture

This painting of outdoors is a good example of implied texture. The artist used different painting methods to make the 2D painting seem 3D.

Non-Reflective Texture

This wall shows non-reflective texture because nothing reflects off the surface, but an artist has carefully carved human figures into the brick wall and used this wall as a canvas. This photograph was taken on 5th St, in downtown Greenville, NC.

Reflective

This picture was taken at Town Commons by the Tar River. The water and the waves show the shadows that were reflected from the surface.

Art Light

This photograph shows a great example of art light from outdoors. Around Christmas time many people use light with color and different shapes to decorate their homes and yards.

Task Light

The light fixtures in this photograph represent task light. This photo was taken at in Downtown Goldsboro, NC. These are task lights because they are used when dark to light up the streets and sidewalks.

Natural Light

This photograph shows the source of all natural light: The sun. All natural light that shines in windows, doors, etc., comes from the Sun. This photograph was taken from downtown Greenville, NC, by the Town Commons.

Colored Light

These traffic and pedestrian lights are an excellent example of outdoor colored lighting. These primary colored lights can be seen as art to a lot of people, as well as have a purpose in traffic. Downtown Greenville, NC.

This photograph taken at the Town Commons represents monochromatic color scheme. The different tints and shades of green all come together and make beautiful scenery in nature.

Geometric Form

These bushes have been made into pyramid geometric forms. These bushes are very popular during the holidays and many people decorate them and use them indoors and outdoors. This photograph was taken beside the BB&T Bank, Greenville, NC.

Natural form

This photograph was taken from the Grand Canyon. The natural form of these rocks is beautiful art when you really take the time to look at it. The natural color of the rock and dirt makes this a really beautiful sight to see, that has not been shaped by human hands, but by Mother Nature.

This picture was taken at Art Building on ECU’s main campus. This photograph represents abstract form because the sculpture clearly looks like a person, but the pieces of what is supposed to be the body are not formed as human body parts, thus making the artwork abstract. 34

Focal Point-Visual

This photograph represents visual focal point emphasis. You can see that the focal point of the picture is the statue in the middle. Even though the statue is not a part of the building and surrounding architecture, everything is centered around the statue.
