TBA BOOK GROUP CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

TBA Book Group 2020

with Rabbi David Z. Vaisberg. M.A.R.E, M.A.H.L.

Wednesday, March 11, 7:30 PM: Two books will be discussed on this date:

-Sapiens: A Brief History of Human Kind by Yuval Noah Harari

From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 internation-

al bestseller— that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding

of what it means to be “human.” One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited

Earth. Yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us? Most

books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari

breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cog-

nition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires,

Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contempo-

rary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas. Dr. Harari also compels us to look ahead,

because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for

the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves.

Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become? Featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustra-

tions/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of

Jared Diamond, James Gleick, Matt Ridley, Robert Wright, and Sharon Moalem.

-A Pigeon and A Boy by Meir Shalev

A mesmerizing novel of two love stories, separated by half a century but connected by one enchanting act of devo-

tion—from the internationally acclaimed Israeli writer Meir Shalev. During the 1948 War of Independence–a time

when pigeons are still used to deliver battlefield messages–a gifted young pigeon handler is mortally wounded. In the

moments before his death, he dispatches one last pigeon. The bird is carrying his extraordinary gift to the girl he has

loved since adolescence. Intertwined with this story is the contemporary tale of Yair Mendelsohn, who has his own

legacy from the 1948 war. Yair is a tour guide specializing in bird-watching trips who, in middle age, falls in love again

with a childhood girlfriend. His growing passion for her, along with a gift from his mother on her deathbed, becomes

the key to a life he thought no longer possible. Unforgettable in both its particulars and its sweep, A Pigeon and A

Boy is a tale of lovers then and now–of how deeply we love, of what home is, and why we, like pigeons trained to fly in

one direction only, must eventually return to it. In a voice that is at once playful, wise, and altogether beguiling, Meir

Shalev tells a story as universal as war and as intimate as a winged declaration of love.

Organ Donation: Questions and Answers from a Jewish Perspective with Cantor Epstein

This two-part class is open to the community and hopes to increase an awareness of organ donation gener-ally and within the Jewish community specifically. We will clearly and simply explain the different kinds of donation procedures and Jewish bioethical opinions on each. We will study sources and commentaries on the overriding Jewish concept of Pikuach Nefesh (saving a life) as well as other Jewish ethical teachings re-garding donation. We will address misinformation or myths which are prevalent among many in the com-munity. And finally, explain how to become an organ donor in New Jersey. Limited to temple members only.

PRIME TIME MUSICAL AFTERNOON

Prime Time Musical Afternoon, From Gottschalk to Gershwin Sunday, March 15, 2:30 PM. RSVP by March 10 Cost: Prime Time member: $10 All others. $15 (At the door Prime Time member $15 and All others $20)RSVP online or call 973.994.2290.

Join us as we trace the important role played by Jewish composers—from Gottschalk in 1842 to Gershwin in the 1920s and 30s—in the history of American music! In an engaging, humorous and thought-provoking con-cert, pianist Alex Pryrodny, mezzo-soprano Leslie Valentine and tap dancer Alexander MacDonald explore some of the turning points and key contributors, from early fusion attempts until the dawn of the “Jazz Age.” They connect history to the present day to answer the question, “What is American music and what makes it unique, valuable and truly American.”

By his early teens, Alex has won the title of Ukraine’s best young composer twice, as well as several international competitions in classical piano, composition, and improvisation. CARLI LLOYD BIO KRAV MAGA CLASS @ TBA

Carli Lloyd is an American professional soccer player for the US. Women’s National Soccer Team and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Sky-Blue FC in NJ. A two-time Olympic Gold Medalist (2008 and 2012), Carli holds the unique distinction of scoring the game-winning goals in the finals at both the 2008 Games in Beijing and the 2012 Games in London. She also represented the United States at the past four Women’s World Cup tournaments (2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019) and is a two-time World Cup Champion (2015 and 2019). She has been awarded the most prestigious and highest award in soccer being named two-time FIFA World Player of the Year (2015 and 2016), only four other Ameri-cans receiving the award. She became the only American to score multiple goals in three separate Olympic Games (2008, 2012, 2016). Currently she has scored over 115 + goals, in almost 300 games played.

At the 2015 Women’s World Cup, Carli led the U.S. team in record-setting fashion, bringing the World Cup back to the U.S. for the first time since 1999. During the final match against Japan, Carli scored a historic hat trick, with all three goals occurring within the first 16 minutes of the game. Her third and final goal of the game scoring from midfield was widely described as one of the greatest goals of all time. Lloyd became the first player ever to score three goals in a FIFA Women's World Cup final and the second soccer player ever to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup Final. For her performance in the tournament, Carli received the Golden Ball Trophy, awarded to the best player of the tournament, and the Silver Boot for her six tournament goals and one assist. Following her extraordinary achievements, noted me-dia and soccer analysts around the world called Carli’s performance among the best-ever on a world stage.

In July 2019, the USWNT claimed its record fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup title, making Carli a two-time World Cup champion and she became the first player to score in six straight Women’s World Cup games. Off the field, Carli is a role model who empowers fans to never give up on achieving their goals. She almost gave up on her own soccer dream, but with the help and motivation from her coach/mentor James Galanis, Carli continued her journey and has never looked back!

Carli was raised in Delran, NJ and attended nearby Rutgers University, where she set records as the Scarlet Knights all-time leader in points, goals and shots. In 2013, Lloyd was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni. In 2017 she was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. She published a best-selling memoir in the fall of 2016, When Nobody Was Watching. Carli serves as mentor and mental toughness coach for her former youth club, the Medford Strikers .

TBA Men’s Club Enjoy a Hockey Night @ The Prudential Center

It may have been a heated hockey game between the NJ Devils vs Montreal Canadiens on the ice at The Prudential Center in Newark , NJ , but in the stands it was a friendly rivalry among the Temple B’nai Abra-ham Men’s Club members with their Canadian- born Rabbi David Z. Vaisberg and some of their guests, also Montreal Canadiens’ fans. Ultimately the Montreal Canadiens did take the game, but all who attended had a fabulous time of camaraderie and socializing at this TBA Men’s Club sponsored event.
