From the Pastor’s Desk Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme: “Everyone Who Exalts Himself Will Be Humbled” My dear brothers are sisters, today we celebrate the twenty second Sunday in ordinary time. Today, we are called to reflect on how we carry ourselves when it comes to the virtue of humility. In July I went home to bury my mother. One local parish from the village invited me to a naming ceremony or what some people may call “churching.” As I entered their parish hall, I could feel there was something not quite right. A few people were talking together in a small group and it was clear that they were not happy. In the left corner of the hall, there were four women. They sat there without saying a word. Their faces showed that they were not happy, not happier than those in the small group. I was glad when I saw the smile of my friend Joe who came to welcome me. “How nice to see you! I am happy you are here. Come! Here is your place, just beside me at the first table. You deserve the best for you are welcome. Wow! Long time?” I would have never dared to take that place, but I could not refuse the honor my friend was giving to me. The next day, I heard from my neighbor why some people had long faces. continued on page 3

Hoy, estamos llamados a reflexionar sobre cómo nos comportamos cuando se trata de virtud de la humildad En julio fui a casa para enterrar a mi madre. Una parroquia local del el pueblo me invitó a una ceremonia de nombramiento o lo que algunas personas pueden llamar “iglesia.” Entré en su salón parroquial, pude sentir que había algo que no estaba del todo bien. Cuando leí por primera vez el evangelio de este domingo, me vino a la mente la imagen de la ceremonia de nombramiento. Los rostros de esos. El presente volvió a mí. Todavía siento pena por ellos ... hoy gospel tiene algo que decir sobre esta forma de buscar los primeros lugares. “Jesús había ido a comer a la casa de uno de los principales fariseos. Les contó una parábola a los invitados porque había notado cómo eligieron los lugares de honor.” Jesús nos dice que no busquemos lugares de honor, sino que vayamos al final de la mesa. Esto nos ahorrará vergüenza si alguien más importante ha sido invitado. Si no, la persona que nos ha invitado puede llevarnos a un lugar más alto, lo que nos hará feli-ces. Después de contar la parábola a los presentes, Jesús agrega las siguientes palabras, “Todo el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.” Exaltarse a uno mismo, significa hacernos ver grandes delante de las personas. Usted sabe cómo hacer esto, al jactarse mucho de todo lo que podemos hacer. Hablando de todas nuestras buenas cualidades. Haciendo un largo lista de todas las cosas que hemos logrado hacer. Explantando con mucho detalle nuestra inteligencia y nuestra supuesta sabiduría. Los por el contrario, humillarse, significa que no “alardeamos.” No pretendemos ser más importantes de lo que somos. Nos aceptamos tal como somos. Aceptamos que tenemos buenas cualidades y talentos. Pero ... le damos crédito a Dios que nos los ha dado. No parezcamos o pretendamos ser más inteligentes, exitosos o incluso más religiosos que otros. Reflexionemos sobre las palabras de sabiduría que escuchamos en la primera lectura (Eclesiastés 3: 17-20, 28-29), “No hay cura para la enfermedad (enfermedad) del hombre orgulloso ya que un crecimiento maligno ha echado raíces en él. El escritor de Eclesiastés habla del orgullo como una especie de cáncer, “un crecimiento malign” que crece en el corazón o parte del ser. Esa enfermedad no tiene cura porque el hombre / mujer orgullosa no ve que él / ella está enfermo. Él / ella piensa que todo está bien con él / ella. A él / ella le gusta creer que todo está bien y bien con sus ojos. Esto es lo que Jesús ha condenado tan a menudo. El primero lectura nos recuerda el mensaje de Jesús. Escúchalo de nuevo “Cuanto más grande eres, más debes comportarte humildemente, y entonces encontrarás el favor del Señor.” Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¿son una persona muy importante? Considera tu vocación y responsabilidad. ¿Puedes comportarte humildemente para encontrar el favor del Señor? Dios estará complacido contigo. Porque Él reconocerá en ti los caminos de su propio Hijo. El que nos ha dicho: "Aprende de mí, porque soy gentil y humilde de corazón" (Mt.11: 29). Como somos sus seguidores, debemos ser como Él es gentil y humilde. Hoy, debes haber descubierto la raíz de tu orgullo, de la jactancia, de la búsqueda honores. Tal vez esta semana, querrás erradicar algo de esto, para que el “crecimiento malign” no crezca más y más, y más grande ...
(Continued from page 1) They were members of the parish counsel and they had hoped they would all sit at the first table. A few of them had been asked to sit at the next table, and they were annoyed. So, that was the explanation. I said to myself, “ Is it not strange that a feast where everyone should be happy can be the cause of so much unhappiness?” When I first read the gospel of this Sunday, the image of the naming ceremony came into my mind. The faces of those present came back to me. I still feel sorry for them … Today’s gospel has something to say about this way of looking for first places. “Jesus had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees. He told the guests a parable because he had noticed how they picked the places of honor.” Jesus tells us not to look for places of honor, but to go to the end of the table. This will save us embarrassment if someone more important has been invited. If not, the person who has invited us may take us to a higher place, which will make us happy. After telling the parable to those present, Jesus adds the following words, “Everyone who exalts himself will be hum-bled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” To exalt oneself, means to make ourselves look big in front of people. You know how to do this—by boasting a lot about all we can do. Speaking of all our good qualities. Making a long list of all the things we have succeeded in doing. Explanting with much detail our cleverness and our so-called wisdom. The opposite, to humble oneself— means that we do not “show off.” We do not pretend to be more important than we are. We accept ourselves just as we are. We accept that we have good qualities and talents. But… we give credit to God who has given them to us. Let us not appear or pretend to be more clever, successful, or even more religious than others. Let us reflect back on words of wisdom we heard in the first reading (Ecclesiastes 3: 17-20, 28-29)— “There is no cure for the proud man’s malady (sickness) since an evil growth has taken root in him.” The writer of Ecclesiastes speaks of pride as a kind of cancer—“an evil growth” that grows into the heart or part of being. That sickness has no cure because the proud man/woman does not see that he/she is sick. He/she thinks everything is fine with him/her. He/she likes to believe that all is good and well with his/her eyes. This is what Jesus has con-demned so often. The first reading reminds us of Jesus message. Listen to it again— “The greater you are, the more you should behave humbly, and then you will find favor with the Lord.” My dear brothers and sisters, are you a very important person? Consider your vocation and responsibility. Can you behave humbly to find favor with the Lord? God will be pleased with you. Because He will recognize in you the ways of his own Son. He who has told us, “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.” (Mt.11:29). Since we are His followers, we should be as He is gentle and humble. Today, you must have discovered the root of your pride, of boasting, of seeking honors. Perhaps this week, you will want to root out some of this, so that the “evil growth” does not grow bigger and bigger, and bigger …
