Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord,
Welcome to Sacred Heart Church!
Thanks for joining our worshiping
community as we celebrate our Eucharistic
Liturgy for the 21st Sunday in Ordinary
Time. We are blessed through your
presence and prayerful participation. May
the Risen Lord enlighten your faith as you listen to
God’s Word. May the Bread of Life we take and eat
nourish your spirit.
Parish life picks ups steam a little earlier this year!
Meetings begin this week, as the Home & School
Board, the Picnic Committee, and the Finance
Committee gather in preparation for upcoming
activities. Sacred Heart School begins classes next
Tuesday, September 1! It’s the first time I can
remember beginning school before Labor Day.
Hopefully, the parents and children are ready for a
new school year.
Recently, I came across an article on “The Culture
of Narcissism,” a book written by Christopher Lasch
in 1979. In his book, the author argued that social
trends in the 20th century had given rise to a
“narcissistic personality structure.” This “narcissistic
personality structure” is exhibited in a reluctance to
make long-term commitments, a fear of aging and a
fascination with fame and celebrity. Christopher
Lasch’s 1979 insights have become a reality in
today’s society.
In the Book of Joshua today, the people are asked
to make a long-term commitment. They are asked to
commit themselves “to serve the Lord.” Joshua,
speaking for himself and his household, says “We will
serve the Lord.” The people, rejecting the gods of the
Amorites, also make the long-term commitment. “We
also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.” In today’s
Gospel the “long-term commitment” meets resistance.
Some disciples struggle with Jesus’ teaching on the
Bread of Life. They find it hard to accept. Not being
able to make a long-term commitment to Jesus, “many
of his disciples returned to their former way of life.”
In the ups and downs of life, our long-term
commitments to Christ, to one’s marriage, to one’s
religious vows and to our family
responsibilities can be tested. I
pray each of us will be blessed
with the grace to be firm in our
long-term commitments to serve
the Lord through our lives as
Catholics, as spouses, as parents
and as family members.
Be well! God bless,
Fr. McKee
