August 25, 2019 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time WELCOME THE STRANGER We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria fleeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus’ call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? “They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD.” In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to “strive to enter through the narrow gate” into the glory of God’s own homeland, the reign of God. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Brothers and sisters of every race and language will be brought to Jerusalem (Isaiah 66:18-21). Psalm — Go out to all the world and tell the Good News (Psalm 117). Second Reading — Strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees (Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13). Gospel — People from east and west, north and south recline at table in the kingdom of God (Luke 13:22-30). SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Tuesday: St. Monica Wednesday: St. Augustine Thursday: The Passion of St. John the Baptist Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later. Italy’s heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day. An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GRACE AND STRUGGLE The gift of grace increases as the struggles increase. —St. Rose of Lima ACTS OF THE APOSTLES I never heard anything about the resolutions of the apostles, but a great deal about their acts. —Horace Mann

HOW TO PRAY Grant us grace, Almighty Father, so to pray as to deserve to be heard. —Jane Austen

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 25, 2019 Strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed. — Hebrews 12:12-13

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: 1 Tes 1:1-5, 8b-10; Sal 149 (148):1b-6a, 9b; Mt 23:13-22 Martes: 1 Tes 2:1-8; Sal 139 (138):1-6; Mt 23:23-26 Miércoles: 1 Tes 2:9-13; Sal 139 (138):7-12ab; Mt 23:27-32 Jueves: 1 Tes 3:7-13; Sal 71 (70):1-4a, 5-6ab, 15ab, 17; Mc 6:17-291 Viernes: 1 Tes 4:1-8; Sal 97 (96):1, 2b, 5-6, 10-12; Mt 25:1-13 Sábado: 1 Tes 4:9-11; Sal 98 (97):1, 7-9; Mt 25:14-30 Domingo: Eclo 3:17-18, 20, 28-29; Sal 68 (67):4-7, 10-11; Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a; Lc 14:1, 7-14

— Hebreos 12:12-13

Please DO NOT PARK in NO PARKINGS ZONES around the church where the borders are painted in red. These areas are for emergency vehicles to have access to get to easily get to a person in need of help. Beginning in September this notice will be enforced and vehicles will be towed away at owners.

We will commence the semester on Thursday, September 12th. A free breakfast will be served at 6:00am. The presentation will begin at 6:15am then we will break up into small groups at 6:45am. We will end each session precisely at 7:15am. Each session will have Spanish and English tables.

1. To fast for an hour before receiving Holy Communion. The excep-tions are medicine, water or unless someone is ill and needs to eat sooner. 2. Teachable moments for kids to learn to properly sit – kneel – stand and listen. It is also an opportune moment to teach to refrain from snacks and drinks. The exceptions would be milk for infants, water for the priest or choir and sick. 3. Focus on God and silence. Maintain less movement for less distrac-tion. 4. Chewing gum is disrespectful. 5. Cross yourself with Holy Water on entering and leaving the church. This is a reminder of our Baptism, which made us members of Christ's Church. 6. Dress modestly. Dress in a way that gives witness to your faith. 7. Come early and be as close to the altar as possible. 8. Cell phones are on silent mode. Checking messages, making calls or texting can wait. 9. Youngsters should offer their seats to the pregnant, sick or aged who are standing. 10. When we enter and leave Church, genuflect (bow your knee) to-ward the Tabernacle. Christ is present for our sake. By allowing our right knee to hit the floor, we acknowledge He is our Lord and God. If someone is physically unable to genuflect, then a bow is sufficient. During Mass, if you pass in front of the altar or tabernacle, bow rever-ently. 11. Restless children and baby are asked to be in the “cry room”. 12. Keep our missalettes and hymnals away as toys for children or fans. 13. Come to mass with your offering prepared. 14. Bulletins are read before or after the Mass. 15. Bow before receiving Holy Communion. 16. Only those who have made their First Holy Communion are to make the Communion line. 17. Answer to Mass responses meaningfully. 18. Leave at the end of the final blessing and the recessional hymn that accompanies it, if there is one. 19. Pray after Mass. Stay for a few minutes before leaving the pew. 20. Leave quietly. We encourage you to visit others as a part of Chris-tian fellowship and it is appropriate to do it outside of the main sanctu-ary of the church so as to respect others who want to stay and pray.
