NOTE ON TODAY’S GOSPEL
The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple
will officially be celebrated on February
2nd, but today’s Gospel gives an account
of that event. According to the Mosaic
Law, Jesus had been circumcised on the eight h day following
his birth. On the occasion of his Presentation in the Temple, the
proceedings had as much, or more, to do with Mary and Joseph
as it did with Jesus.
According to the Mosaic Law, women were ceremonially un-
clean from the birth of a male child for forty days. Any person
who touched that woman was also ceremonially unclean. At the
end of the forty days, both father and mother were to present
themselves in the Temple to be purified. The two doves shown
in the above picture were a ritual offering. According to the Old
Testament, Jewish couples had to “redeem the first-born” with
an offering of 5 shekels of silver. Also, for purification, they had
to bring a lamb to be sacrificed,. However, if they were poor,
they could bring two doves or two young pigeons. The very
poorest of the poor could bring an offering of flour. We know the
rest of this wonderful story, because here the Holy Family meet
with Simeon & Anna, and Jesus is recognized as the Messiah!
