Words from the Greatest Showman, words sung to the school by Fr Patrick on Feast Day, words that

inspire us to be proud of who we are and what we stand for.

Feast Day (8 June) was a great celebration not only of Christ's love for us, but also of our love for each

other, and a great opportunity to affirm what we are all about at Sacred Heart College.

The day started with Mass celebrated by Fr Patrick and attended by representatives from our Boards,

contributing schools and the wider community. To say it was a celebration is an understatement.

Mass was followed by an unveiling of feast day artwork. This year this is a mural with Euphrasie Barbier

at the centre, surrounded by flowers in colours representing our six houses. The mural was designed

and created by Nikki Payne who put hours of work into cutting out the various flowers for each form

class to paint. We are so pleased with the result and the mural hangs proudly on the wall where

Mission House used to stand. It will be a constant reminder to us of our foundresses and their charism;

a constant reminder that we need to continue their great work. Thank you Nikki for such beautiful

work. (Photos on front page and page 10.)

The day's celebrations ended with a school concert that highlighted the wide variety of skills and

talents our young women have been blessed with.

Earlier this term I had the pleasure of going to Mission Cup/Te Toa with our Premier Netball and First XI

Hockey teams. The girls played their hearts out on both the courts and the turf and, although we did

not come away with any trophies, demonstrated high levels of teamwork, skill and resilience. This

tournament is an opportunity to reconnect with the other Mission Colleges in New Zealand and for

students to make personal connections with young women from these schools. Next year we look

forward to hosting the tournament here in Lower Hutt.

Our Parents, Friend, Supporters group (PFS) is a small dedicated group whose activities support our

school in a variety of ways. Currently they are concentrating their efforts on hosting the multitude of

events we have at school. In that vein a request was put out to students and families for donations of

cups to make catering easier and more affordable. Fortunately we had a generous family who saw this

request and anonymously donated 206 cups!! We are very grateful to them and know that their

generosity will be rewarded. The next meeting is Mon 30th July at 7pm in the staffroom – all welcome.

I was fortunate to attend the triannual Catholic Conference where Catholic educators, bishops, priests,

school trustees and a range of others associated with our New Zealand Catholic education system

collaborate, share ideas and learn together to benefit all Catholic schools. The theme of the conference

this year was Christ's Call: to love, to be, to do (Ko Tā Te Karaiti Karanga: kia aroha, kia tuturu, kia ora);

a humbling challenge for us all, particularly when it is easy to get lost in the busyness of our days.

We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone.

Next week is the last week of term before two weeks' holiday. Please support your daughter/s to make

the most of the break, to take the time to relax as well as catch up on any work. We want them back in

term 3 ready to focus on their learning and being successful in their endeavours.

Situation Vacant

Part-time Music Administrator to start Term 3

(5 hours per week, term time only)

The busy Music Department at Sacred Heart College is looking

for a part-time assistant who is available for an hour each week

day. Prior administration experience would be desirable.

The successful application needs competent computer skills, to

be comfortable communicating with students and their families

in person, by phone or email, and able to be responsible for a

variety of regular tasks such as filing and photocopying.

Interest in Music would be beneficial. The successful applicant

will be expected to support the ethos and special character of

the school.

We are encouraging all students to take ownership of their own learning plan. This means that they are tracking all their credits.

Students can access results at any time using their student ID and password.

A reminder that all students pay an NCEA fee of $76.70 which is passed on to NZQA by the school. If unpaid, students do not receive their learning record. Financial assistance is available http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/assets/qualifications-and-

Act of Perseverance

Students are being encouraged to perform an Act of

Perseverance (a continued effort to do something).

Hopefully this Act will become a habit! Eg wearing their

uniform correctly every day, being organised for class,

being on time to school every day, trying hard even when

they are finding the work tricky.

crucifixes. It was decided that every classroom, at the very

least, needed a prayer table, a bible and a cross. The first

two, no problem. The latter however were in short supply.

Enter our brotherly heroes at St Bernard's College. A short

SOS email to DRS Jonny Boon was flicked to HOD

Technology Patrick Cassidy who in turn handed the task to

two Year 12 students – Max Allardyce and Jayden Riddell.

The photograph bears witness to the trade skills and

spiritual integrity of these young men. Father Joy from Te

Awakairangi Parish came one morning tea to appropriately

bless Max and Jayden's work, the fruits of which can now

be witnessed in all parts of our College.

We thank Max and Jayden for bringing to our buildings, in

Alternative Pathways to Careers

Sacred Heart College, together with St Bernard's, St

Oran's and Chilton St James organised and held an event

at the Walter Nash Stadium. We called this 'Alternative

Pathways to University', with the event's goal being to

inform and educate our young people in the Hutt Valley

about the pathways to careers and the many different

options they could choose.

A variety of Hutt Valley tertiary training organisations and

employers participated. These included ATNZ

(Apprentice Training NZ), BCITO (Building and

Construction Industrial Training Organisation), Career

Force, Service IQ, Primary ITO, Weltec, Whitireia, UCOL,

Open Polytechnic, NZ School of Travel and Tourism,

Taratahi, Yoobee, Learning Connection, NZ School

Fashion Technology, Defence Careers, Police, Fire

Engineer, and Hutt Hospital showcasing the careers in the

health sector.

We took year 11 and 12 students to the exhibition to give

them the opportunity to find out more about the

pathways they can take and to think about alternatives

they had not considered before. A good example of this

would be girls in the construction industry. We hope that

by understanding the alternatives to university and the

opportunities they have they can make good decisions

about their future.

We look forward to growing this event in the future with

the support of other schools, the Council and local

employers, giving all young people in the Hutt Valley the

we have a wide range of options and courses available

Year 11 Māori and Pasifika Victoria University Experience

On the 11 June, 20 Year 11 Māori and Pasifika students visited Victoria University. The day was designed to encourage

students to consider university education as a pathway to a career, enable students to explore career pathways of their

choice, enable students to familiarise themselves with the campus, and gain first-hand experience of university study and

potential career options through fun, interactive lectures and workshops. The students had a great time and are looking

Academy Conference – Big Ideas for Bright Minds

On 15 May, 13 of our top senior students attended the

Academy Conference – Big Ideas for Bright Minds. The

Conference provided the opportunity for the girls to listen to

world class thinkers and to explore some of the Big Ideas

facing mankind today. Ideas explored were: truth and logic,

and the role of contemporary media in reshaping these

ideas; the origins and nature of matter; the afterlife; and

how to create a gold medal mindset. The day finished with a

lively debate on the topic of whether everyone should tell

the truth all the time or not. Mrs Carol Free

BCITO's Big Construction Tour

On 31 May a group of girls headed out to look at potential

career opportunities in the Building and Construction

Industry. The day's programme saw them visit the Otaki

Expressway, a building construction site, Allied Concrete and

Bramco Granite and Marble where they were able to see

first-hand what it is like to work in the industry and to talk

with employers, workers and apprentices about potential

pathways. A big thanks to BCITO who organised and funded

the day and to Mrs Hight who accompanied the girls.

Congratulations to the girls who recently completed the Red Shirts in Schools programme, gaining their Level 2 Certificate in

Customer Service Skills and 22 credits towards Level 2. A great effort girls – well done!

course at WelTec

where they gained a

knowledge of menus and beverages, and learnt skills in professional table service and front of house service. At the end of the

course, Sacred Heart College Staff were treated to lunch in the training restaurant, served by our girls.

The Big Sing

This year we took 40 girls, two choirs to The Big Sing Regional Competition and Festival held in the Michael Fowler Centre. The girls sang their socks off. Feedback from music staff in other schools said how our girls moved them to tears, that they loved their tone, confidence and pride on stage, all the harmonies, and how many of the girls had featured solos. We are very proud of them.

They received their Participation Certificate (the most important award recognising all their efforts). But this year they also gained other awards.

Sonore (all-comers choir Year 9-12) won certificates for:

- Excellent Performance of a NZ composition (written by "Pablo" Paul Fitzgerald)

- Adjudicator's Choice for best performance by a student directed choir (they conducted themselves for 2/3 pieces).

Year 12 and 13 Music Classes Choir won:

- Adjudicator's choice for their two songs "Will the Circle" and "A Million Dreams".

Experience in participating in the Secondary Chamber Music Contest

I had always looked forward to participating in the Chamber Music Contest when I was old enough. Now that I am Year 9, I could finally perform this year.

My first year of chamber music experience has been truly amazing! I had the opportunity to play in two chamber groups; a string quartet and a piano trio.

Leading up to the contest, both my groups had a lot of rehearsing. I had about five times a week of chamber practice!

My trio played the piece Trio for Two Violins and Piano by the New Zealand composer Christopher Norton. It is a beautiful piece which I had extremely enjoyed playing and I'm so glad my teacher chose it. All three movements had something different, which made it so interesting and exciting to play.

Chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments with one performer to a part. Chamber music is great because after you work on your own part and put all the different parts together, it sounds magical with such rich texture.

My trio consists of me on the violin and another violinist, Sam Merton - a Year 11 student from Hutt International Boys School, and a fellow Sacred Heart school mate, Jasmine Robinson from Year 11 on the piano.

I performed on both 9th and 10th of June for each of my chamber groups, and both groups received wonderful feedback from the judges. Some words from the adjudicator for my trio group were "Lovely sound from all 3 players. Balanced lovely expressive playing. Beautiful intonation and quality playing from the violins. Very together.". I was quite pleased with my performances.

I certainly look forward to playing more chamber music in the near future and can't wait to start my next chamber project and participate in the chamber contest again next year.

Caritas Song Composition

Sacred Heart College Year 11 students Ngarangi Sadlier-Patmore and Shanille Lat won the Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand SINGout4JUSTICE song composition senior category with their song 'Questions'. Congratulations girls.

Ngā Manu Kōrero

Sacred Heart College was fortunate to enter four speakers into the Regional Ngā Manu Kōrero Regional Speech Competition held at Hutt Valley High School on 25 May 2018.

Ruby Bradbrook was a great representative for our Junior English section. Analia Snowden-Isles placed 2nd in the Junior Maori section and Chelani Gray-Clarke placed 3rd in the Senior Maori section. Tuimaleali'ifano Fiso placed 1st in the Senior English section.

We are very proud of all the girls who spoke. We would like to thank all our supporters who came with us on the day.

We look forward to travelling to Gisborne later this year to support Tuimaleali'ifano at the Nationals in Gisborne.

Library News

We have a new 'toy' in the library – a Promethean ActivPanel. Thanks to the financial support of the Thomas George Macarthy Trust, we were able to purchase this touch screen device.

Some of our teachers and the Library Team have been learning how to make use of this device and how best to use it to support our teaching programmes. We have also been encouraging our students to try it out during their lunch breaks. We installed a few drawing and educational apps and have found that, for many of our students, their natural curiosity has helped them to learn how to use it with minimal instruction from us. Our hope is that students and school staff alike can become familiar with the ActivPanel and broaden their technological expertise.

Brooke Wyburn and Brooke Thomas from 12 MC, taught themselves how to use one of the drawing apps within one lunchtime, including saving their work to the gallery and editing their artwork.

We are tremendously grateful to the Thomas George Macarthy Trust for their continuing financial support of educational establishments in the Wellington region.

Marching

At the end of last term Aimee Burton, Mercedes Isaako-Livingston, Roisin McKendry and Emma Burton competed, with the rest of their Under 16 Glennette marching team, in the New Zealand Marching Championships in Hamilton. The girls put in well over 100 hours of practice leading up to the event. Their team attained 3rd Technical Drill team, and 2nd Display team, overall placing 3rd NZ Championship team in

their grade. Well done girls.

13 Reasons Why:

The NZ Mental Health Foundation now has a whole area

devoted to '13 Reasons Why' a popular Netflix series (second series released May 18th 2018, rated R18).

The series explores several difficult issues many young people may face. The issues covered in the series may be distressing, confronting and emotion triggering so if you or one of your friends or one of your young people is watching this it can be really helpful to talk about the content together.

The school guidance counsellors are also available to talk to and there are several national helplines listed on the website that offer support, information & help. There is also a guide available on the website for parents and guardians called 'Challenging media: Talking with young people about what they are watching'.

PE

On Friday 25 May both Year 13 PE classes competed in the Tough Guy, Tough Girl event in Wainuiomata. Prior to the event all students participated in a training programme to prepare them physically for the challenge they were about to undertake.

The Tough Guy, Tough Girl competition is a 6km obstacle event. Sacred Heart College was one of the largest competing schools at this event in 2018.

To name a few of the obstacles they faced on their 6km, the girls had to wade through mud, scramble through drainpipes, climb over some very large obstacles, run a hill that had a gradient so steep that rope was needed, and avoid the live wires in the commando crawl section.

It was an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to take a wonderful bunch of young women to the event. They not only demonstrated great determination and resiliency but compassion and the willingness to support others, and they took pride in doing so. You should all be incredibly proud of your achievement. You represented not only your school but whānau to the highest level. Well done. Miss Katie McCarthy

Innovative Young Minds (IYM) Attendees

Following on from last year's success of having four students attend the IYM programme and Hayley Krippner as IYM Ambassador, we have two students (that I know of) that have been accepted for 2018 – Kaylee McDonald (11MO) and Sangitha Sivakumar (12CD). There were 90 applications for 40 places and unfortunately two other SHC students missed out.

The students spend a week at the Silverstream Retreat Centre with 38 other female students. During the week they are introduced to women working in Science and Technology in the Greater Wellington area and visit a number of work places.

Students pay $150 with Rotary covering the rest of the week stay. Mrs Maria Blackburn

Sportswoman of the Week

The Sports Council have initiated a new reward to bring recognition to a player each week who has displayed one or more of the following:

Outstanding performance

Good sportsmanship

Showed great improvement

Displayed school sisterhood

There will be a nomination slip to fill in, outside the sports office by the drop box for anyone to nominate. A winner will be decided each Friday and rewarded with a small prize.

Week one's winner went to Gianna Lill for volunteering to umpire another school's netball game at late notice The school remarked on what a wonderful umpire she was, that she was highly professional, extremely knowledgeable and very fair. Fantastic effort Gianna!

Week two's winner went to Anitalinty Wamiri who showed great courage and strength during the 1st XI Football game. Anita displayed some fantastic goal keeping skills and, even after a strong blow to the face by a football at close range, Anita showed incredible resilience and battled on, helping keep her team to a two all draw against Onslow. Awesome performance Anitalinty.

St Mary's Exchange

On 12 June 2018 our Senior A, B, 9A and 10A Netball teams, Senior Basketball, and 1st XI Hockey and Football teams competed in the annual St Mary's exchange. The teams played in horrendous weather conditions but toughed it out. The Senior A Netball team had a nail-biting 1-point win and 10A Netball won their match 32-21.

Mission Cup and Te Toa

Over Queen's Birthday weekend, the Senior A Netball and 1st XI Hockey teams competed in Mission Cup and Te Toa respectively. The event was hosted by Sacred Heart College, Napier.

This is an annual tournament involving all Mission Colleges in the North Island: Sacred Heart Lower Hutt, Napier, New Plymouth, Hamilton, and St Joseph's Maori Girls' colleges. Our netball team competed well winning three out of the four games, only going down to Hamilton in a tough physical exchange.

The young 1st XI Hockey team failed to post a win but fought hard, gained new skills and played some of their best hockey to date.

Swim Champs

The College Sport Wellington Individual Swim Champs were held on June 21 and the following girls competed in various events: Brianna Carson, Milla Coe, Anya Dunlop-Brown, Lucy England, Tsai Stevens, Una Strickland and Gracee Gresham. Fantastic effort was given by all on the day with Brianna Carson coming 2nd in the Girls 15 & over 100 SC Metre Butterfly.

Amazing and well-deserved success

Our Senior A and B Netball coach, Bubs Reweti, has won Volunteer of the Year at the Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards. This is a very prestigious award and Bubs was one of five finalists. The caption below from the Sport Wellington website captures Bubs' dedication and commitment. We are very lucky to have her with us at Sacred Heart College.

"Bubs is a netball legend who continues to give her time, energy and commitment to the game. Bubs has held many volunteer positions and her fundraising efforts have gone a long way, supporting teams to get to national tournaments and ensuring that fundraising targets are met to support teams or clubs to stay afloat."

The Year 10 Sports Academy class have been working closely with Podium Performance to develop their knowledge and understanding of injury prevention, how to implement key strategies to improve performance, and increasing awareness of correct movement patterns.

The girls undertook growth and development testing at the start of the year, with an emphasis on the whole person rather than focusing solely on isolated tests. It is important to keep a balance at this young age while girls are still developing, as we would like to see them remain injury free and lifelong participants in activity, rather than burn out at a young age.

It has been a pleasure working with the team from Podium Performance, and watching the girls grow from strength to strength in many facets throughout the course. The students have had great success within their sporting codes so far this year and we wish them all the best as they venture off to Winter Tournament next term. Mrs Maria Kerr
