Project Pipelay Campaign
In May 2018, Sarawak Shell Berhad(SSB) embarked a pipelaycampaign for the E6 field – anelongated pinnacle-type carbonateoil and gas field of Middle Miocene. The pipelay campaign consists ofthe installation of 2 High PressureHigh Temperature (HPHT) pipelines;16” (16km) wet gas pipeline toE8DR-A and 10” (68km) crude oilpipeline to D35R-A, 2 risers and 4subsea spools. Sapura OffshoreSdn Bhd (SOSB) deployed theirnewest DP3 heavy lift and pipelayvessel, namely SAPURA 3500(S3500) for the pipelines installationcampaign.
There are many challenges thatrevolved around the pipelineinstallation works starting fromonshore and offshore pipelinepreservation, pipe cycling, welding, field joint coating etc. Each of theseactivities would have direct orindirect impact on the pipelineinstallation schedule. Through closecollaboration with various in-houseengineering disciplines andcontractors, a few new technologydeployments have been identifiedand successfully deployed for thiscampaign.

Strong and continuous support in driving Injury Free mindset by launchingthe Injury Free Club (IFC) onboard S3500.
Both COMPANY and CONTRACTOR work collaboratively and transparently in achieving successful pipelay campaign.
Performed pipe cycling/consistency weld onboard S3500 before andduring transit to offshore location to assure the optimized Auto WeldingSystem Parameters and to increase workforce welding efficiency andperformance level prior to actual production
Performed field joint coating and welding simulation onshore to analyzethe required timing for each task for actual pipelay production offshore. Tasksperformed at each available station are optimized onboard S3500 to reduce“wait” time based on simulation result.
Utilization of new Field Joint Coating technology - STOPAQ that reducescoating time and number of work station in the firing line.
Joint review by MCI, SURF, CAT1 engineers and TAs for the weldacceptance criteria considering both ECA and API 1104 requirements toensure practicality (not overly stringent) while maintaining weld integrity.
COMPANY supplied line pipes were well preserved with regular, i.e. half-yearly inspection to ensure pipeline be in top notch ready-to-weld conditionresulted in zero rejected pipe offshore.
Increased number of welders onboard to improve pipelay productivitydespite Ramadan Month.

The Technology
Generic
NameVisco Elastic Polyisobutene
Description
• An uniform thickness wrapping band wrapping, resistant/
impermeable to water. Application with outer wrap is required.
• Initially designed for onshore pipeline coating – moving to
offshore as topside fabric maintenance solution e.g. riser, piping
and now offshore field joint coating.
Advantages
• Improved personnel safety – minimise open torch flame
application
• Cost effective – Reduction of manpower requirement
• Reduce application time of each joint up to 36% quicker :
• Simple application and inspection
• Simple repair procedure

Project Pipelay Campaign
Excellent safety performance (Injury Free) for more than 400,000
manhours throughout offshore pipelay campaign.
Higher average pipeline lay rate against planned.
Repair rate as low as 0.5% (10”) and 1.3% (16”) vs KPI of 5%
Early completion of pipelay campaign - 16 days ahead of schedule.
