Dear Parents & Guardians It has been a busy October. The weather has led to stunning autumn foliage which has drawn many visitors and tourists from around the world to our school area. The students were also visited by a pair of eagles that observed the comings and goings for a morning. Our teachers enjoyed meeting all the parents and guardians who attended the goal-setting conferences earlier this month. We held both a fire drill and an earthquake “shake out” drill during the month. Students were calm and obedient during both drills. Our Buddy Reading volunteers continue to read daily with our younger students. All the students were able to pick out a terrific book from “Books for Me”. The first B.E.A.R. event of the year was a success. Thank you to the many families who came out to read with the children. A Vancouver City Police officer came by with a special assembly for all students on being safe at Halloween. He was able to pass on the information in a light-hearted approachable manner that the children enjoyed. We wish you a safe Halloween night. SAFETY CONCERNS

Important Information Regarding Kindergarten Registration

Thank you for submitting a registration form for your child to attend Kindergarten in September.

Tillicum Community Annex and Hastings Elementary share a common school catchment area. Students who reside within this catchment (in-catchment registrants) will receive priority for enrolment at one of the two school sites based upon available space.

When completing a registration form parents will be asked if they prefer the annex or the main school. This information will be noted at the top of your child’s registration form. The district will attempt to accommodate parental preferences for placement, once available space has been determined.

At some sites there may be more in-catchment applicants than available space. In these instances, the following process will be used to prioritize enrolment:

Kindergarten Applications Received Between November 1 and January 31

In-catchment Kindergarten registrants who have a sibling who is currently attending and who will continue to attend Tillicum Community Annex or Hastings Elementary next year will be enrolled first at their preferred location.

The names of all other in-catchment registrants will be entered into a random draw for the remaining Kindergarten spaces. Students will be registered at their preferred location as space permits.

Students who cannot be accommodated at their preferred location will be accommodated at the location that has space and placed on waitlist for their preferred location in the order in which their name is drawn.

Between January 31 and the second Friday in June (when school organizations are finalized), students on the ordered waitlist will be offered spaces at their preferred location as space becomes available. This waitlist will remain active until September 14, 2018.

Kindergarten Registrations Received AFTER January 31

All in-catchment Kindergarten applications received after January 31, will be registered at their preferred location, if there is space, or added to the bottom of the existing waitlist for their preferred location and registered at the location that has space to accommodate them.

Please Note:

There will be no priority given to registrants with siblings already attending Tillicum Community Annex or Hastings Elementary if they register after January 31.

In the event there are more in-catchment registrants than can be accommodated at either catchment site, students will be placed at a neighbouring school until space becomes available.

“Sneezes & Diseases”

Educating yourself and your loved ones about communicable diseases and how to prevent infection is an important part of staying healthy.

Hand washing is the best way to stop the spread of infections.

Sneezes & Diseases resource for parents, teachers & caregivers

Sneezes & Diseases resource guide is a resource book for parents, providers in child care settings and teachers in elementary schools.

It includes prevention information, facts about diarrhea, vomiting & fever, facts about childhood diseases and infestations.

It is helpful to know when a trip to a doctor or clinic may be useful and when a child is safe to return to school.

Also, on page 31 there is info on the “Common Cold”, and check out page 37 to read about your child and the flu.

Our Community Health Nurse

Tillicum Community Annex has a

wonderful Community Health Nurse—

Cindy Diett. If you wish to contact her

about a medical concern, especially in

the area of immunizations, her phone

number is: 604-872-2511 (Local 3308)

Cindy has asked us to remind all new

Kindergarten parents to return the

immunization updates that were sent

out, as soon as possible.
