4. FIRST AID MEASURES

4.1 Description of first aid measures

Following inhalation Remove from contaminated area, lay patient down, keep warm and rested.

Obtain medical attention.

In case of skin contact Wash with plenty of water and soap.

If irritation occurs, continues and/or worsens, stop using the product, consult a physician

In case of eye contact Wash out immediately with fresh running water for several minutes.

Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and moving the

eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids, seek medical attention if irritation occurs.

If swallowed Do not induce vomiting, if the person is conscious, wash out mouth thoroughly with water.

Never give anything to a person showing signs of being sleepy or with reduced awareness; i.e.

becoming unconscious. Obtain medical attention.

4.2 Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed

Inhalation May be harmful when inhaled, may cause irritation of the respiratory tract.

Ethanol [CAS# 64-17-5]:

At concentrations above 50% may cause local mucosal wounds due to dehydration and

precipitation of albumin. Rhinitis (nasal membrane inflammation) may occur. Cough, headache,

fatigue may be seen.

Skin Although no adverse effects are expected, the product contains ingredients which may cause

sensitization by skin contact, people who are sensitive to chemicals should be careful when using

the product.

Eyes Causes serious eye irritation. Burning sensation, increased lacrimation and redness may be seen.

Ingestion May be harmful if swallowed. May cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. Nausea, vomiting

and diarrhea may also be seen.

4.3 Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Central nervous system depression, narcosis, nausea, vomiting may be seen when swallowed.

Thoroughly observe the patient and treat symptomatically.

5. FIREFIGHTING MEASURES

5.1 Extinguishing media

If safe to do so, remove containers from path of fire.

Water used to extinguish fire should not enter drainage systems, soil, or stretches of water.

Contaminated fire-extinguishing water must be disposed of in accordance with the regulations

issued by the appropriate local authorities.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

6.1 Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

6.1.1 For non-emergency personnel

Ensure adequate ventilation, avoid inhalation of vapors/fumes and contact with eyes.

Remove all sources of ignition.

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so, keep away from incompatible products.

Evacuate the area.

6.1.2 For emergency responders

Evacuate personnel to safe areas.

Remove all sources of ignition.

Ensure adequate ventilation, avoid inhalation of vapors/fumes and contact with eyes.

Consider exposure limits and use personal protective equipment referred in Section 8.

6.2 Environmental precautions

Try to prevent the material from entering drains or water courses.

Spillages or uncontrolled discharges into watercourses must be alerted to the Environmental Agency or other appropriate

regulatory body.

6.3 Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up

Remove with an inert non-combustible absorbent (like vermiculite, sand, cat litter) and dispose of absorbent as hazardous waste.

Wash the contaminated surface with water.

Dispose of waste material according to local, state and federal regulations.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

7.1 Precautions for safe handling

Use ex-proof equipment when handling.

Ethanol vapors may form explosive mixtures with air (Lower Explosion Limit 3,1% v/v, Upper Explosion Limit 27,7% v/v), do

not work in confined spaces and fume hoods with unknown performance.

The product is flammable; do not spray directly on fire or hot surfaces.

Handle in accordance with the general rules of occupational hygiene and safety.

Avoid inhalation of vapours, wear protective clothing when risk of exposure occurs, ensure adequate ventilation.

Do not eat, drink or smoke in areas where the material is used, wash thoroughly after handling the material.

Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas.

7.2 Conditions for safe storage including any incompatibilities

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area protected from environmental extremes.

Protect from heat, flames and sparks, extremes of temperature and direct sunlight.

Store away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs and foodstuff containers.

Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.

All equipment must be grounded - bonded when transferring product in order to avoid static discharge from the equipment, and

subsequent possible fire.

Storage class 3 (Flammable liquid substances), only substances of the same storage class should be stored together.

Observe manufacturer's storing and handling recommendations, take all precautions mentioned in this document.

Store away from alkali metals, ammonia, oxidizing agents and peroxides.

Observe the national and local regulations concerning handling and storage.

8.2 Exposure controls

8.2.1 Process conditions/Engineering measures

Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice, wash hands before breaks and at the end of workday.

Use closed apparatus if possible.

If release of the substance cannot be prevented, then it should be suctioned off at the point of exit.

Ensure adequate ventilation, do not breathe vapors, consider emission limit values, use ex-proof ventilation equipment.

Label containers clearly, do not leave containers open.

The substance must not be present at workplaces in quantities above that required for work to be progressed.

Wash thoroughly after using product, wash hands before eating or drinking.

May cause allergic contact dermatitis in some people.22

Mutagenicity Based on available data, the classification criteria are not met.

Ethanol [CAS# 64-17-5];

Mutagenic effects were definitely determined in animal experiments, however the

corresponding dosages were already distinctly toxic. Therefore, the germ cell-mutagenic

potential is considered to be negligible under these conditions.

2,2',2''-nitrilotriethanol [CAS# 102-71-6]:

In various bacterial test systems, in cell cultures and in a micronucleus test on mice, did

not show any genotoxic activity.23 Nevertheless, a mutagenic effect was not excluded as a

consequence of exposure to Triethanolamine in a mixture with diethanolamine and nitrite

as contaminants (formation of the nitrosamine).

Carcinogenicity This product contains a component which is identified as carcinogen by NTP,24 IARC25 or

OSHA26 in case of long-term intake of large amounts in the form of alcoholic beverages.

In a two-year study, female B6C3F1 mice were exposed to Triethanolamine via skin (100,

300, 1000 mg/kg, 5 days a week). Carcinogenic activity has been observed in the form of

increased hepatocellular adenoma. It was concluded that this effect is likely caused by

choline-depletion.

IARC Group 1: Carcinogenic to humans. Long term intake of large amounts in the form of alcoholic

beverages can cause tumors in the oral cavity/pharynx, larynx, gullet, liver and probably also in the

breast and bowels.

IARC Group 3: This category is used most commonly for agents, mixtures and exposure

circumstances for which the evidence of carcinogenicity is inadequate in humans and inadequate or

limited in experimental animals.

13. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

13.1 Waste treatment methods

Do not allow wash water from cleaning or process equipment to enter drains, it may be

necessary to collect all wash water for treatment before disposal.
