  • SAFETY TALK WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Work-Life Balance: Balance is one of the identified psychosocial risk factors that can impact an individual's mental health.

Work-life balance is a state of well-being that allows a person to effectively manage multiple responsibilities at work, at home

and in their community. This is different for everyone and it supports physical, emotional, family and community health without

    grief, stress or negative impact.

Four broad categories are associated with work-life balance:

Role overload: total demands on time and energy for multiple roles are too great to perform the roles adequately

Work-to-family interference: work demands and responsibilities make it more difficult to fulfill family -role responsibilities

(e.g., long hours prevent attendance at a child's sporting event)

Family-to-work interference: family demands and responsibilities make it more difficult to fulfill work -role responsibilities

(e.g., a child's illness prevents attendance at work)

Caregiver strain: multi-dimensional, can be attributed to the need to provide care to someone else who needs it.

Consider these ideas to find the work-life balance that’s best for you:

    Acknowledge priorities

Leave work at work/ turning off your phone and being present

    Set and enforce boundaries

Avoid over-commitment: Learn when and how to say "no."

    Communicate

    Keep hobbies

Avoid perfectionism: If you set your standards higher than you can obtain,

you will never feel like anything is complete.

Determine which tasks are worth your time. For the remaining unwanted

tasks, consider hiring someone to do them.

Continuously adapt: Recognize that achieving work-life balance is a never-ending process.

Know when to seek help. One resource available is the Employee Assistance Program.

Work-life balance enables you to feel as if you are paying attention to all the important aspects of your life. Creating work-life

balance is a continuous process as your family, interests and work life change. Periodically examine your priorities - and make

    changes, if necessary.
