———CALENDAR OF THE WEEK———
Dear Parishioners and Visitors,
Greetings from Lourdes, France. Over the past
few days, the group and I have been tracing
some “Ignatian” history, following in the footsteps of St.
Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, and his stal-
wart companion and first missionary, St. Francis Xavier.
But, as much as I love the spirituality of St. Ignatius, much
closer to my heart is the story of St. Bernadette Soubirous
and our Lady of Lourdes. This is by far is my favorite
Marian apparition. Though I hope to visit Fatima someday,
as well as the Rue du Bac in Paris (where our Lady gave
the miraculous medal to St. Catherine Labouré) and though
I have been to Medjugorje as a teenager, I was brought up
on the story of the poor St. Bernadette and how Mary ap-
peared to her in what my father called a “trash-dump,” as
indeed the grotto at Massabielle was at the time of Mary’s
first apparition there in February 1858. It is a tender story
of faith, hope, and above all, love.
I have since read and re-read the book Song of Ber-
nadette by Franz Werfel. It tells the simple but profound
story of a communication between the Lady of Lourdes and
this innocent child that is wrapped up, to paraphrase the
author, in a beauty that was far beyond the physical but
which radiated the interior beauty that comes from sublime
goodness, the most attractive of all beauties. It was from
there that the spring of water flowed to bring healing to so
many. It will be a privilege to celebrate Mass in the grotto
this morning. I will certainly remember you in my prayers
at this most sacred spot. See you next week. May God
bless you,
Fr. Michael

schools. Volunteers spend 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours one day a week at
the school of their choice.
There is also a need for Math Tutors to teach basic addi-
tion, subtraction, multiplication & division. Anyone interested
in more info, please call Dick Testa at 754-5492.
RESPECT LIFE! Gov. Cuomo’s “Reproductive Health Act” of
2019 has legalized late-term abortions of fully-formed infants in
the womb, expanded the pool of practitioners who can perform
abortions, and has removed legal protections for babies who sur-
vive abortion. As Catholic Christians we need to voice our
protest of this legislation. At the entrances of the church are let-
ters to send to Gov. Cuomo to express our opposition to abortion.
Please take one home, sign it, and mail it in to the address on the
letter; if you prefer, you can drop it off at the rectory or place in
the collection basket, and we will mail all letters together.

Our Lady of the Rosary
October 7
The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted to honor Mary
for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7,
1571. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary
for victory. The Rosary, or the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, is one of the best prayers to Mary, the Mother of God.
The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with
the Apostles' Creed, which summarizes the great mysteries of the
Catholic faith. The Our Father, which introduces each mystery, is
from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel's
words announcing Christ's birth and Elizabeth's greeting to Mary.
St. Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The
Mysteries of the Rosary center on the events of Christ's life. There
are four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and––
added by Saint John Paul II in 2002––the Luminous. The repeti-
tion in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contempla-
tive prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the
words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where
Christ's spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a
group.
The Five Joyful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Mondays, Sat-
urdays, and, during the season of Advent, on Sundays:
The Annunciation; The Visitation; The Nativity; The Presentation in
the Temple; The Finding in the Temple
The Five Sorrowful Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Tuesdays,
Fridays, and, during the season of Lent, on Sundays:
The Agony in the Garden; The Scourging at the Pillar; The Crown-
ing with Thorns; The Carrying of the Cross; The Crucifixion and
Death
The Five Glorious Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Wednesdays
and, outside the seasons of Advent and Lent, on Sundays:
The Resurrection; The Ascension; The Descent of the Holy Spirit;
The Assumption; The Coronation of Mary
The Five Luminous Mysteries are traditionally prayed on Thursdays:
The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan; The Wedding Feast at Cana;
Jesus' Proclamation of the Coming of the Kingdom of God; The
Transfiguration; The Institution of the Eucharist

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from
the Office of Family Life Education (A
Hope Appeal Agency)
Faith is one of those things we just can’t
get enough of! In today’s gospel the apostles asked Jesus to
“Increase our faith.” It is faith in ourselves, our spouse, our
children and our parents which equips us to overlook annoy-
ances, helps us to forgive and urges us to ask forgiveness.
“Lord, increase our faith!”
