We are celebrating the feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple. According to the Law of Moses, every firstborn, both human and animal, was to be con-secrated to God. This is what the Lord God pre-scribed to Moses: “Consecrate to me every firstborn; whatever opens the womb among the Isra-elites, whether of human being or beast, belongs to me” (Ex.13:2). The Lord God also said to Moses, that every boy shall be circumcised on the eighth day (Cf. Lev. 12:3). Another prescription of Moses was that a woman who gives birth must offer a sac-rifice of purification, usually a lamb. If she cannot afford a lamb, then she can offer a pair of turtledove or pigeon (Cf. Lev. 12:1-8). It is in this context that Joseph and Mary went to the Temple eight days after the birth of Jesus to consecrate him to God and to have him circumcised, following the Law prescribed by Moses, and to offer the sacrifice of purification. They were welcomed by the prophet Simeon and the prophetess Anna. Both prophets, led by the Spirit, spoke greatly about the child Jesus and his mission of redemption. Like the Lord Jesus, we too are consecrated to God in virtue of our baptism. When our parents took us to the church to be baptized, it was in a sense our “presentation in the temple.” We were consecrated to God when we were anointed with the sacred chrism. Like Christ, we become also “a light for revelation to the gentiles.” With the grace of God, let us live up to our bap-tismal consecration so that salvation may reach all we meet each and every day.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

Composed by the

Most Rev. Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn

Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have in-structed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vine-yard of Your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangeliza-tion. We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us to be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future.

Lord, you told the Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in Vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life.

We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest, Amen.
