St. Dominic Catholic Church FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Houston, TX January 31, 2016

Dear Friends in St. Dominic. This year- 2016- we remember the 50th anniversary of the Diocesan Services Fund campaign in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. This year’s theme is: HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER (Psalm 136). This week-end, we shall have the video presentation of the 2016 DSF campaign focusing on the office of vocations, correctional ministries, aging ministry and the catholic chaplain corps – which are just a few of the 60 + programs that advance the mission of the catholic church. Your support for DSF meets the needs much larger than our parish can serve alone. I invite everyone to help us sustain these critical programs and works of mercy that are essential to following our shared path or discipleship. Through your unwavering support of DSF, the Archdiocese will continue to be the hands and feet and compassionate face of the Lord to all those who seek, as Pope Francis says—the signs of the closeness of God. Next week-end (February 6th & 7th ) as a faith community, we will make our DSF 2016 commitment to reach our parish goal of $ 34,000. Please pray for your commitment and active participation! This week-end’s scriptures pose a question for us to reflect on: Are we successful Christians? This is not an easy question to answer. What is the measure of success for the followers of Christ? Is it enough to avoid really big sins and make it to Mass on Sundays? That was not the criteria that Christ gave us. He put the bar higher, because he loves us, and when you love someone you always seek the very best for them. You are not satisfied with mediocrity. Christ did not command us just to go to Church and be nice. It does not stop there. Christ commanded us to love one another as he loved us, and to go out and make disciples of all nations. That is what Christ did. He was successful at it. And what did his success bring him? Misunderstanding, persecution, rejection, unpopularity. He went around doing good, tiring himself out healing the sick, casting demons out of the possessed, comforting the troubled, giving himself to others out of love, and what did he get for it? All the influential and powerful people - the Pharisees and Sadducees - started calling him a rabble-rouser and spreading rumors that he was a drunkard and an agent of the devil. He went around preaching the truth, the truth about sin and salvation. He preached it fearlessly, eloquently, lovingly, with his words and with his example. And what did he get for it? His own townspeople rejected him; they tried to throw him off a cliff! Christ fulfilled his life mission, but it did not make him popular. If we are to fulfill our life mission we need to be ready to suffer similar consequences. We can measure our success as Christians not by how comfortable our faith is making us, but by how uncomfortable it is making us. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. Roger Estorque

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest

of these is love. — 1 Corinthians 13:13

Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Ahora tenemos estas tres virtudes: la fe, la esperanza, y el amor;

— 1 Corintios 13:13

WANTING Our chief want in life is somebody who shall make

us do what we can.

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time: That we may live more God-centered lives and become less self-centered. “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous.” (1 Corinthians 13:4) Do you get jealous? Do you focus more on the things that other people have than on the gifts that God has given to you? Are you pompous? Do you acquire more possessions to impress others? At times we are all guilty of these things. Pray for more humility. Pray to become less self-centered and more God-centered 4to.

THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE

I t is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to write what we now know as the thirteenth chapter of

First Corinthians, knew that he was penning what was to become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this brief passage, he set down ideals about love that have held fast through the centuries. Sometimes we may think that because these are ideals to which we aspire, we are excused from them in our daily living. But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends, providing them with some sound advice about what it meant—and still means—to live in love, day by day, as a follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God and neighbor. Today we hear what this love must look like in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our relationships with others.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

F or the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have been a sense of marriage as a church institution.

Christians followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government’s role in marriage. In general, they expected Christians to know that marriage was good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a divine institution, that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the official religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter. On wedding days people gathered in the bride’s house, where the father would “give her hand” to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the couple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in procession to the bride’s new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a blessing at the meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a “photo-op” feel to it that was widely emulated. Before long, at least in the East, it looked as if the priest were joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union.
