SAINT JOHN MISSION STATEMENT:

We are a community of faith that is: gathered for worship and fellowship, empowered by Scripture and the Sacraments, strengthened for service and sent forth as witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Come Holy Spirit, Come! Although Pentecost is a mi-nor festival when compared to Easter or Christmas, the gift of the Holy Spirit is so integral to our faith that the celebration never fails to evoke a sense of excitement as well as comfort. The comfort comes from knowing that God’s Spirit is always with us, giving us wisdom and empowering us to live the resurrected life. The excitement arises from the fact that our God cares so much about being in rela-tionship with us that the Spirit’s presence was consid-ered foundational by God, even at creation. It is only the one God wor-shiped by the three Abra-hamic faiths that desires so strongly to be in close rela-tionship with us, rather than some distant deity that ma-nipulates us and expects sacrifices to curry favor. We are so blessed to have this gift of the Holy Spirit, which although intangible, can so often be clearly dis-cerned as a force in our lives.

As is our custom here at Saint John, we will be cele-brating the first Holy Com-munion of two of our chil-dren, Khloe Klatman and Makayla Mooney. They have been a t tending w o r s h i p since infan-cy, and in Sunday school together since they were about three years old. As is so often the case, during the past year or so they have been eagerly awaiting their opportunity to partake of the Eucharistic meal with us. We are look-ing forward to their instruc-tion, it is such a joy to see how the children understand and respond to God’s gift of grace and to spend time with their parents. Personally, I can attest to the presence of the Spirit in my life. It was a pretty big surprise when the Spirit called me to the ordained ministry, and I have relied on the wisdom and comfort-ing presence of the Spirit throughout the 21 years I have served the people of Saint John. During the last few months, it was the discernment of the Spirit that made me un-derstand that the time had come to retire from full-time ministry, although I do

believe there is another chap-ter ahead – perhaps part-time interim work or some other challenge that the Spirit has in store for me. I have learned the Spirit is full of surprises! I cannot help but trust that this must be the right time for the right person to become the new pastor at Saint John. Perhaps even now they are discerning that the Spirit has something special in store for them, as I did 21 years ago, and I have confidence that they will be guided and com-forted just as I have been on the journey. They will bring enthusiasm and a fresh new perspective to the challenges that we all face doing minis-try together in this time and place. Our Tanzanian partners in ministry expressed our feel-ings about Pentecost so beau-tifully: “Gracious Spirit, heed our plead-ing, fashion us all anew. It’s your leading that we’re needing, help us to follow you. Keep us fervent in our witness; un-swayed by earth’s allure. Ever grant us zealous fitness, which you alone assure.” (WOV 687) May the gift of the Holy Spirit be with you always,

The children are working with Ms. Quinn on new music to share with us on Pentecost Sunday. If you

child did not bring home their music, please let us know so we can get a copy to you. Practice at home makes the children more confident when they get up in front of the congregation. We are looking for a few volunteers to team teach Sunday school next year. With team teaching no one needs to teach every

Sunday. Anyone interested should see Jennifer Cline Sargent. There will be no Intergenerational Bible study on Sunday, May 6. We are hoping to reschedule it.

Our last day of Sunday school will be on Sunday, June 3. We hope that all of the children will be

able to join us to participate in the fun and games that are part of our end of the year celebration!

YOUTH FUNDRAISER In the spirit of “change” that our youth will be embrac-ing this summer we welcome the repre-sentatives from doTERRA to teach us how we can “change” our approach to health and wellness with their essen-tial oils and other home, health and beauty products .

SOCIAL MINISTRY Blessings to all mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, aunts and all ladies who nurture others.

May you be blessed ten-fold! As you may know, Ed Finn is on the mend and we continue to keep him in our prayers for healing. Yet he managed to get in a delivery prior to his illness. Ed Finn took an additional 49 lbs. of groceries to New Life Center in April.

Thank you to all who donated groceries towards the Easter bas-ket drive. We will get a tally and

include the poundage next month. May you enjoy the reawakening of Spring!

The Outreach/ Social Ministry Committee

WOMEN OF THE ELCA The meal preparation for the INN (International Nutrition Network) is on the first Tues-day FOLLOWING the first Wednesday of each month at

5:30pm. We have gotten the task down to one hour! Another example proving "many hands make light work", so if you have a free hour once a month, please join us! This month we will be cooking on Tuesday, May 8. We hope that everyone had an opportunity to see the beautiful quilts our LWR quilters had blessed during worship on Sunday, April 29. Our small group continues this labor of love every Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Howe Room and welcome new-comers at any time. There are many ways to help, not just sewing!!

The next WELCA Bible study will be at Grace North Bellmore on Friday, May 25 at 10:00 am. Pastor Krauser will lead the discussion about an inter-

generational topic from the May issue of Gath-er magazine.
