PRO-LIFE LIVING ROSARY Saturday, October 6, 2018

Eve of the annual Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary

The Couples for Christ community will sponsor the praying of a Pro-Life Living Rosary on the First Saturday of each month here at Saint John XXIII Church. All are invited to take part in the Living Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and in the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which will follow at the regular time of 5:00 p.m.

Couples for Christ (CFC) is an international Catholic religious association of the faithful of Pontifical Right. One of its core values is to be pro-life. In support of this, CFC has established the Gift of Life Ministry, catering to all matters in defense and preservation of life, teachings on the Theology of the Body, and other pro-life activities.

Every first Saturday of each month is a special day allotted, not only to show devotion to the Blessed Mother, but as well to pray for the intention of a greater respect for all human life from conception to natural death. Members of Couples for Christ and all parishioners at large are invited to participate in this important effort of prayer and sacrifice.

An Opportunity to Recycle PLASTIC CONTAINERS NEEDED

The Missionaries of Charity (i.e. Saint Mother Teresa’s Sisters) regularly distribute food to those in need, especially soup. To do this, the sisters are requesting various sized containers with lids, e.g. bigger yogurt containers, margarine tubs, plastic coffee containers, etc. Plastic carry bags, grocery bags, are also needed for people to place food containers in to carry with them. There is an ongoing need for both containers and bags throughout the year.

On Saturday, October 6th, Kids for Christ of the CFC West 3 Chapter will observe a KFC Global Day of Service. That evening, while their parents gather in the parish hall, children ages 4 – 12 years will be supervised in Room 12 and in the Lounge where they will wash and dry plastic containers and prepare them for delivery to the Missionaries of Charity. So if you have containers to donate, please drop them off at the parish office this week or before or immediately after the 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, October 6, 2018.

“The cry of the oppressed is God’s voice … The cry of the voiceless and the hopeless is God’s voice …

The protest of the poor is God’s voice … And the voice of the countries who are victims of these injustices is God’s voice.” — Dom Helder Camara

“The church is not in charge of God. It is a sacrament of God’s reign in the world, sustaining us to live and love the way Jesus of Nazareth did. Our faith is not in the church as a human institution,

but rather in God, in Jesus, in the gospel …” — Educator Thomas Groome __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“If everyone kept only what is necessary for ordinary needs and left the surplus to the poor, wealth and poverty would be abolished.” — Saint Basil the Great (329-379)

SPIRITUALLY ADOPTED BABY PROGRAM: On October 6th and 7th the Knights of Columbus of St. James Council will launch their Spiritually Adopted Baby Program. A Pro-Life display will be set up just inside the south church entrance along with lapel pins and mini-roses for donations if desired. Those who choose to Spiritually adopt will be asked to pray each day over the next nine months. On or around Mother’s Day 2019 proceeds and donations will be taken to THRIVE Community Support Circle. Thrive is dedicated to providing services that support women, pregnant women, men and children, at all stages, to cultivate family life, empower individuals and grow community. In conjunction with the Mother’s Day presentation, our Knitting Group is already hard at work making items for the layettes that also will be donated. If you would like to learn more about the Spiritually Adopted Baby program, please contact Jeff Lutz of the Knights of Columbus at 204-888-0343.

PARISH CATECHISM CLASSES 2018 – 2019

Catechism classes are held on Sunday mornings at 10:15 a.m. Once again we are utilizing the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies liturgically-based catechetical program that provides weekly handouts with a short description of the Sunday Gospel plus suggested activities and discussion starters for each age level. In keeping with the seasons and feasts of the liturgical year, children in class and with their families can have fun while learning about Jesus, his Church and the teachings of our faith.

Those who would like their children to take part in catechism classes are asked to complete a REGISTRATION FORM for each child. A catechism registration fee will help defray some of the costs of running our program. Nevertheless, this requested fee should in no way be considered a reason to refrain from enrolling children for whose parents the fee would impose an undue hardship. As a rule, each Sunday children participating in our parish catechism program gather in the parish hall with their parents/guardians by 10:15 a.m. for some initial prayers and announcements. Then children break into their various catechetical groups and proceed with their catechists to their designated classrooms. Catechetical classes are divided into the following age groups: SEEDS (Preschool), PROMISE (Kindergarten – Grade 1), GOOD NEWS (Grades 2-3), VENTURE (GRADES 4-6) and VISIONS (Grades 7-8). Parents/guardians are asked to return to the parish hall by 11:15 a.m. to be ready to pick up their children.

WE STILL COULD USE THE HELP OF A FEW MORE VOLUNTEERS to serve as catechists, substitute catechists and assistants. If you are willing to assist in any way, please advise Sharon Camier (our Pastoral Assistant). Let us all pray for the continued success of our faith formation program for children.

HOW DO I BECOME CATHOLIC?

Many avenues lead individuals to the Catholic Church. The journey of faith can be a winding road. Whatever path has led you to this time of searching or interest in becoming a baptized Christian or, if already baptized, making a profession into the full communion of the Catholic Church, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process that could be Good News for you in your journey of faith. Our pastor, Father Robert, and our pastoral assistant, Sharon, are once again considering starting up this fall the RCIA process in our parish. Tentative plans include initial inquiry sessions to be held immediately following Mass on Wednesday evenings. To help us make preparations for the RCIA in our parish, please let us know if you might be interested in participating. Please speak with Father Robert and/or Sharon. We have a limited number of packs of leaflets of the series Understanding Christian Initiation which we can distribute to those discerning whether they would like to begin participation in the RCIA process.

PREPARATION FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION

On Sunday October 14th at 1:15 p.m. an ORIENTATION SESSION will be held for youth, their parents (and interested catholic adults not yet confirmed) who wish to prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2019 to be conferred when the Archbishop comes to our parish probably sometime in the spring. Please contact Sharon Camier or Fr. Robert to register and to find out what the preparation program will entail. We look forward to meeting our new confirmation candidates at our orientation session on October 14th.

Sunday, September 30, 2018 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Numbers 11.25-29 Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were Prophets!

Psalm 19.7, 9, 11-12, 13 The precepts of the Lord are right, and give joy to the heart.

James 5.1-6 Your riches have rotted.

Mark 9.38-43, 45, 47-48 Whoever is not against us if for us. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION Our Gospel passage and the Second Reading from the Letter of St. James urge us to examine our lives for anything that

is keeping us from loving God above all else. Jesus says, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off… If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. And if your eye causes you

to sin, pluck it out.” St. James warns, “Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your

clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you.” The urgency of our need to detach from all that is not God is clear. When we hold onto possessions too tightly, they

come to possess us. The “stuff” can easily become the focus of our energy and attention. Attachment to material things slowly and steadily corrupts.

The spiritual discipline of tithing — or stewardship of treasure — can help us with this. Tithing leads us to let go of unhealthy attachment to material things and leads us to attach instead to God, relying on Him as our true source of security and happiness. We come to understand that all that we have is a gift from our loving Father and we use it to bless others and glorify Him.

Amazingly, we actually enjoy material gifts, and all other gifts, more as a result because we realize where they really came from and are using them as God intended. What wonderful freedom there is in living this way!

Sunday, October 7, 2018 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Genesis 2.7ab, 15, 18-24 The two become one flesh.

Psalm 128.1-2, 3, 4-5 May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives.

Hebrews 2.9-11 For the one who sanctifies

and those who are sanctified all have one Father.

Mark 10.2-16 What God has joined together, let no man separate.

STEWARDSHIP RELFECTION Today’s readings give us a wonderful refresher on the Biblical origins of the Sacrament of Marriage, going all the way

back to the second chapter of Genesis in our First Reading, and then reinforced by Jesus in our Gospel Reading from St. Mark. Perhaps more than any other time in Christianity, marriage and family life are under attack right now. It is vital that we

have a proper understanding of the Church’s beautiful and solid teachings in these areas. We call this type of knowledge, “Formation” and it is one of the pillars of a stewardship way of life. Solid formation in the faith not only strengthens us in our own walk with the Lord, but it allows us to pass on this knowledge to others who are thirsting to know the truth about the human person, and it also arms us to defend our beliefs, when necessary.

Page 9: Saint John XXIII Roman Catholic Church · 30-09-2018  · Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3K 0Z3 Telephone: 204-832-7175 • Fax: 204-885-2447 ... Life Ministry, catering to all matters

9

These readings also invite us to reflect on the reality that we are to be good stewards of the vocation the Lord has entrusted to us. If I am married, do I recognize that my spouse and my marriage are a gift from God that must be nourished, developed and tended? This brings to mind the stewardship aspect of “Time.” After time spent with God, my next priority of time should be for my spouse. Do I realize that at the end of my life I will have to give an account to God for how I cared for the gift of my spouse and marriage?

During October 3 - 28, 2018, Catholic bishops from around the world will gather in Rome for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on “Young People, the Faith and Vocational Discernment”. The synod is an

opportunity for the bishops to discuss with one another and to advise the Holy Father on issues that are important to the Church. In this synod, they will also listen to the voices of young people who have been invited to speak at the synod as representatives from various parts of the world. The bishops will consider the concrete challenges faced by young people, Catholic and non-Catholic, across the world today and how the Church may be called to accompany them along the path of discernment, listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit and living the life of love and truth that is the vocation of every human person. Throughout the month of October, Salt + Light will be bringing you a variety of programming to keep you up-to-date on all that is happening inside the synod. Pope Francis will declare Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Oscar Romero saints of the universal church in a ceremony in the Vatican on October 14th during the Synod for Bishops on young people. They will be canonized along with five other blesseds.

Pope Francis beatified Paul VI at a ceremony in St. Peter’s Square on October 19, 2014 while Cardinal Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided over the

beatification ceremony for Archbishop Romero in San Salvador in May 2015. It is surely significant that Archbishop Romero’s beatification first, and now his canonization, comes when for the first

time in history there is a Latin American pope on the See of Peter who wants “a poor church, for the poor.” Moreover, it is fitting that Pope Francis should canonize these two great church leaders since he sees his own ministry as being in continuity with both bishops whom he will soon declare saints of the universal church. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SHARING GOD’S GIFTS

Our parish’s appeal target for 2018 is $25,720.00 As of Friday September 28th our parish has reached 114% of our

target, i.e. total received to date and pledges = $29,350.00

CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to all parishioners of Saint John XXIII who have so generously contributed to the campaign in support of our Archdiocesan pastoral services!

Remember that when our parish exceeds its Sharing God’s Gifts target, donations in excess of the target are returned to the parish exempt from further assessment to be used towards local priorities.

Although our parish has reached its Sharing God’s Gifts target for 2018, we must remember that we still have substantial outstanding financial obligations including the balance of Archdiocesan Assessment owed for 2017 and the full amount for 2018. So any further contributions to Sharing God’s Gifts can help us to meet these outstanding obligations. Contributions to Sharing God’s Gifts may be forwarded through the parish office or directly to the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. Various payment options are available. If you wish to contribute via cheque, please make cheques payable to “Sharing God’s Gifts”. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“It is a lovely thing to have a husband and wife developing together and having the feeling of falling

in love again. That is what marriage really means: helping one another to reach the full status of being persons, responsible and autonomous beings who do not run away from life.”

OCTOBER IS WORLD MISSION MONTH “Go! Make disciples of all nations.” (Mt.28:19) These words—the imperative mission of Christ—call each baptized

Catholic to action. The Church has a lasting mission to perform in this world, a mission that is ever more apparent, and the need for it is ever more urgent. In fact, mission isn’t something the Church does. It is what the Church is!

This year, World Mission Sunday is on October 21st. This is a worldwide collection for the missionary Church that offers emergency aid when disaster strikes, cares for refugees in war-torn countries, provides rural health clinics and transportation for priests, catechists, religious and lay pastoral workers. It offers financial support for the daily needs of all missionaries. Please pray for the missions and be generous on World Mission Sunday.

Prayer for World Mission Sunday We pray to the Lord our pledge to preach with our youth the Gospel to everyone:

You call us to preach your Good News to all nations, in every situation! Inspired by you, we come out from our churches and our houses to preach the Good News. Inspired by our youth, their dreams and their questions, we are keen about your Mission.

Together, we will build a new Earth, which will be more just, more in solidarity, and more fraternal. We will build relationships marked by trust, Sharing, and openness to other people.

We will not erect walls of division, but we will build bridges to connect your large human family!

Amen.

All children and adults are welcome! Further details in the next parish bulletin.
