ST. CLARE OF ASSISI FEAST DAY: AUGUST 11

As a girl in 12th century Italy, Clare heard the legendary St. Francis preaching in the square below her family home. Inspired, Clare snuck away in the middle of the night to join Francis and his followers. Francis cut her hair like the men and gave her a rough tunic and veil to wear. For the sake of propriety, Clare was placed in a Benedictine nun monastery for several years. As more women were drawn to the simple spirituality, a new order was founded, now known as the Poor Clares. Despite requests from the pope himself to relax their vow of poverty, Clare stood firm in following the spirit of St. Francis. Clare's reputation for virtue spread and attracted women -- rich and poor alike -- to the new order that still exists today.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.” (Exodus 16:4) When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, self-reliance, pride and ego leads to hoarding and excessive surplus of goods and money. Living a stewardship lifestyle helps us discern our “wants” from our “needs”. Living a generous lifestyle reminds us that God will provide all that we need and that we have plenty to share.

MONTHLY PRAYER WITH MARY

—AUGUST 11 The Monthly Prayer with Mary will be on Saturday, August 11 after the 8:30 am Mass in Mary’s Chapel. After recitation of the rosary, we will have a reflection on the Queenship of Mary. The Legion of

Mary invites you to attend.

I always observe an overflowing attendance during Christmas and Easter Masses. We usually have large number of non-Catholics simply because they are visiting Catholic

family and friends in our parish. Weddings (Rite of Holy Matrimony), especially when one of the parties getting married is a non-Catholic, will have a large number of non-Catholics in the congregation. Non-Catholics can also be anticipated at Masses offered for other sacramental initiations and life-cycle events, such as baptism, confirmation and funerals, but they cannot receive Holy Communion.

Certainly, I am always happy to see the church filled with the congregation, especially as we welcome new parishioners. I am always thrilled to see the family receiving Holy Communion but at the same time a heart-piercing experience whenever I witness a notorious person receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. It is beyond my capacity to know the state of the souls of my parishioners seeking to receive communion. I cannot read souls; only God can. But when can a priest or an extraordinary ministers justifiably deny giving Communion even to a Catholic?

There is a distinction between sinners; some are discreet, others are notorious, like being a Mafia hitman, abortionist, a Catholic politician or supporters upholding government legislations and programs contrary to the dignity of human life – contrary to Catholic faith and morals, drug dealer, a professional thief, etc... Every Christian, by the virtue of baptism, has a right and is admitted to table of the Lord except for some open cause. In 1 Corinthians 5:11, St. Paul tells us, “not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother or

(continued above)

sister who is... Do not even eat with such a one. St. Augustine remarks that, “we cannot inhibit any person (clergy and laity)from Communion except he has openly confessed or has been named and convicted by some ecclesiastical or lay tribunal” (De Verbis. Dom.; cf. Serm. Lxxxii).

St. Thomas Aquinas instructs us that, “a priest who has knowledge of the crime can privately warn the secret sinner, or warn all openly in public, from approaching the Lord’s table, until they have repented of their sins and have been reconciled to the Church; because after the sacrament of repentance and reconciliation, Communion must not be refused even to public sinners, especially at the hour of death” (Summa Theologiae III, 80,6).

Someone, including clergy, who is an open and public sinner in a grave matter, and so proud to continue performing the public sin for all to see, can and should be denied Communion to avoid scandal. But when the sin is not open and public, then the Church does not deny Communion to the sinner even if the sin is grave and the individual is wrong in seeking Communion. Not only the priest but also the Christian community must give a prudent, private and respectful counsel to the sinner before receiving the Holy Communion. It is the ultimate responsibility of the individual for worthy reception of Communion. In imitation of Jesus Christ, the Church prefers to make mistake on the side of compassion rather than on the side of rigorousness when it comes to pastoral ministry avoiding any desecration of the real presence of Jesus in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

Love,

Fr. Roy

TAKE COURAGE, HE IS CALLING YOU! Healing the Wounds of

Abortion RACHEL’S VINEYARD

RETREAT —SEPTEMBER 7-8-9

The psychological and spiritual wounds from

abortion can be vast and crippling. You may feel stuck in life and not know why, or even numb, not able to name the buried pain or recognize the symptoms of post abortion syndrome. An abortion can often have a devastating impact on the father and grandparents of the aborted child and the friend/s of their parents, as well. Do not continue to hide in shame, fear or confusion. The Rachel’s Vineyard retreat is a chance to focus on this difficult time in your life while moving you through a non-judgmental group process. This is done in a supportive atmosphere with confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. The program is designed to help both women and men to revive their hope by experiencing the tender mercy of God in Christ Jesus. If you are suffering from a past abortion experience and have isolated yourself from help and forgiveness, we’ve been there! Consider attending the upcoming retreat weekend here in the archdiocese on September 7-8-9, 2018 (Spanish speaking also). For confidential help and information, please call us at the Newark Respect Life office at 973-497-4350 or [email protected] Also, see www.Rachelsvineyard.org for more information.
