JUNE 26, 2016 - THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FROM FR. CHARLES:My sisters and brothers in Christ,

I am amazed at how time flies. One year has passed since I began my ministry at Saint Michael Parish. I am very grateful to Father Jim Lee for having given me the opportunity to write in the Pastor’s notebook to simply say “Thank you” and “Goodbye.” I will leave you on June 30 th to begin my new assignment in Lewis County. I am appointed Parochial Vicar of St. Mary Parish in Centralia, St. Joseph Parish in Chehalis, St. Yves Mission in Harmony, Sacred Heart Parish in Morton, Packwood Station in Packwood, Saint Francis Xavier Parish in Toledo and Sacred Heart Station in Winlock.

My heart is full of gratitude to God for the time of my ministry at Saint Michael Parish. I praise God for what he has accomplished among us from July 3, 2015 until now. I am very grateful to Archbishop Sartain for allowing me to do pastoral work in the Archdiocese of Seattle. I am deeply indebted and grateful to Fr. Lee and to all of you for welcoming me so warmly from the day I arrived in Olympia. Thank you for your support, your friendship, your generosity, your kindness, especially your love for the Catholic Church which is truly “Universal”. Thank you for allowing me to share in your lives during my ministry at Saint Michael Parish. Even though I am sad in leaving you, whom I love, I go to my new assignment with, joy trusting in God’s Providence in all things. In the end, I ask your forgivness for my failures as your Parochial Vicar. I ask your prayers for me, that I may fulfill generously and well my new responsibilities. I ask God to continue to pour all his heavenly blessings upon Saint Michael Parish. May God bless you. May God bless us all in his service.

- Fr. Charles

AND THIS FROM FR. CODY!Hello Saint Michael Parish!

My name is Fr. Cody Ross, but you can just call me “Fr. Cody”! Some of you may remember me from ten years ago when I served as Steward for Life Teen (2006-7). It is so great to be back here in Olympia at Saint Michael Parish, but it’s an even greater honor to be here as your new parochial vicar! I completed my sixth year of seminary forma-tion at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon in May and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese on June 25 at St. James Cathedral. I’m a “baby priest” and I still have much to learn, but I’m so grateful for the Archbishop to assign me here to learn from all of you and from Fr. Lee — someone whose priesthood I admire greatly! (Fr. Lee was my vesting priest at my diaconate ordination.) I enjoy the outdoors and anything active, especially skiing, rock climbing, and doing backflips! I’m looking forward to diving into the life of the parish — growing in relationship with you and Jesus! Blessings!

- Fr. Cody

FR. JIM ADDS:As Fr. Charles prepares to leave for his new assignment with Father Maurer in Lewis County, I want to o®er my grateful thanksgiving for his ever faithful ministry here at Saint Michael Parish. Fr. Charles was always ready to assist me and I am extremely grateful for his diligent ministry. Sometimes Fr. Charles would have two or three emergency calls in one day and he would always be gracious about visiting those in need.

I’m also grateful for how Fr. Charles embraced Hispanic ministry by learning yet another language. This will be very helpful for him wherever he finds himself in the archdiocese.

Let us hold Fr. Charles in prayer and let us also open our arms to receive the newly ordained Father Cody Ross.

One final note: thank you everyone for your prayers for my recovery. As I’m writing this, I am still in Grays Harbor Hospital. Your kindness is most appreciated. I suspect the recovery will take a while and I will keep you informed as time goes on. Again, thank you so very much for your prayers!

“No one who sets a hand to the plow, and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.” Jesus was fond of using agricultural terms and images when teaching His Apostles and His followers, and this quote, which comes at the end of our Gospel Reading from Luke today, is an excellent example of that.

In fact, you almost have to have had experience with farming and plowing to understand what it means. It is important for the health and sustenance of crops that the furrows made by a plow, and in which the seeds will be planted, are straight. Whether plowing in Jesus’ time either by hand or with a plow pulled by oxen, in order to plow straight rows, someone had to focus on where he was going, not on where he had been. It has not changed with our modern farm equipment today.

In other words, the secret is to look forward, and to assure that you are going in a straight line. Looking back invariably made the person plowing lose focus. That is Jesus’ point to us. As good stewards we must keep our focus on Him, on following Him, and on being His disciples. That allows us to move toward our goal of holiness and of being the kind of disciple He wants us to be.

First and foremost, I encounter God in daily prayer; asking God to direct my life and to help me conform my will to Jesus. It is extremely important to me to allow God to be present with me in silence; to better follow his word and listen to God’s voice. I pray for my family and for my siblings, nephew and nieces and other extended family for their health, safety and protection. I also pray to St Monica to intercede on the behalf of my siblings and extended family so they will grow closer to God. Praying for the poor and those in need is important as well. An hour a week of adoration in the presence of the blessed sacrament is also central in my spiritual life, knowing that the mind, body, soul and divinity of Jesus is fully present in the blessed sacrament and that by receiving the Eucharist, I am in communion with Him and the Church.

May God bless you always

THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY“Being diagnosed with cancer has turned my life around in an unexpected way. God has given me this opportunity to live my life as a participant rather than an observer. When removing my eye patches after cataract surgery It was like I was seeing the world in a new way - everything was brighter, clearer - this is the same experience I had when being diagnosed. Everything in my life became a brighter and clearer picture, especially my relationship with God. I am experiencing my faith in a way I never thought possible. “

VBS UPDATEFr. Jim decided to fall o® a bike on Monday, thereby being proactive and allowing VBS to be authentic in our Tuesday theme of mercy, “Comfort the Sick”. He ought to have known we already had a service project planned for that morning. The Agents of Mercy had a second opportunity to be of service. They used a variety of bicycle stationery to draw pictures, write letters that they were praying for him and share their own stories about “how fun it is to crash your bike”! Many of them just shared whatever came to mind, as so many children do.

Vacation Bible School has had an amazing, action packed and bless-ed week. Please go to the SMP News section of our website to read all of the daily newsletters from “Agents of Mercy”. Thank you all for your support of this great Faith Formation opportunity.

VBS UPDATEFr. Jim decided to fall o® a bike on

Today I was at a restaurant with my dad. Service was not great today and I was becoming impatient and frustrated with everyone and every-thing. Finally, I walked to the desk to get our invoice. Earlier, I had noticed an elderly women and her disabled adult son having lunch near us. I wanted to ask her if she needed help

but didn’t want to get brushed o® - to be told “I can do it my self” or “leave me alone”. Since we were still waiting for the waitress, I finally went to her table and explained that I was waiting as well and could I help her cut up her lunch? She was so grateful! She said “please!”, and smiled. Her son smiled as well. She was a parishioner who normally attends Mass at the Westside and who had worked on parish business with my Dad. I wished them well and went on with the day. I did stop and thank God for giving me a purpose to help another and for the push to o®er help. Later, I saw her again in the CNR hallway and stopped to tell my Dad that he raised a great daughter. We laughed. He didn’t understand but it did make my day. Thank you, Jesus! - Michelle Underwood

IS YOUR SMALL GROUP STILL IN FULL SWING?

It’s summertime, but don’t let your faith take a vacation. If your small group is not meeting regularly, why not get together for a family picnic or meet for Mass and lunch? Do a service project together or have a movie night and watch one of the great Catholic movies on our new “FORMED” program. Stay connected and keep supporting each other!

If you’re not in a small group yet, some groups are open to receive new members at any time. Check out the open groups on our parish website or email Diane at [email protected].

SVDP DONATION GUIDELINES!All donations should clean, ready to use, and in good working order.

Clothing: We accept all clothing items. Most critical are underwear, socks, and outerwear of the season, warm coats and rain gear for fall and winter.

Shoes: We accept all, but the greater need is casual shoes for men, children, and women, and work shoes for men.

Bedding: We take sheets, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, towels and wash cloths!

Kitchen and tableware: That’s plates, glasses, cups, and all manner of tableware. All manner of cookware, frying pans, kettles, and co®ee pots are welcome.

Miscellaneous: Bring us books, working TVs and other audio/visual equipment; toiletries, especially soap, shampoo, tooth paste, etc., child and adult diapers.

Note: We have no laundry or repair facilities. If an item needs to be repaired or laundered- please, we can’t use it! We simply don’t have the facilities to make use of it.

The majority of individuals and families we serve are under 30 years old — they wear casual clothing. Most must use laundromats for washing. Many face eviction or have been evicted and are starting over. If they have been evicted chances are they’ve lost everything. Thus, clothing, bedding, and kitchenware are their primary needs.

The Clothing Bank works together with Pregnancy Aid in accepting donations via the donation facility in upper parking lot. Pregnancy and infant clothing, car seats, diapers, etc. can all be donated utilizing that facility.

SAVE THE DATE - SMP SUMMER PICNIC!We’ve had to reschedule our picnic and Mass on the Grass to August 28! We normally hold this event in concert with Lakefair weekend (3rd weekend in July), but the school field is getting new grass and it won’t be mature enough in time this year. Watch the bulletin and website for updates!

YOUTH MINISTRY

THIS WEEK:

COMBINED LIFE TEEN AND EDGE FAMILY BBQ AFTER THE 5PM LIFE TEEN MASS!

In early February, Deacon Bergford and I (Chris Peterson) had the opportunity to go to Haiti and experience the Life Teen Mission in Madian. For one week we lived, prayed and evangelized with some amazing full time missionaries. Let me tell you, Christ is working in some powerful ways in the communities we encountered while there. One day, we had the opportunity to participate in a village mission. This involved visiting a parishioner’s home, setting up a ton of chairs, and inviting their neighbors to come hear the word of God proclaimed. I must confess I was a little nervous because it appeared at first like no one was going to come. After a few minutes of looking at empty chairs we decided to go door to door and invite people to the mission. After visiting the homes in the surrounding area, people began responding to the invitation and the chairs quickly filled up. We started the mission with some music, a scripture, and a personal testimony of God’s mercy and love. Then we invited people to response to God’s invitation to be in relationship with Him by coming up and being prayed over. It was a beautiful thing to witness people responding to the invitation to say yes to Jesus. I was convicted by this experience and realized that I needed to invite more people in my own life to Christ. When we do not invite, we cannot expect people to come. I was reminded that part of being a disciple of Jesus is going out, sharing God’s invitation and calling people to respond in faith. As our missionaries leave for Haiti tonight, please pray for us by name and ask our Lord to give us the courage to share God’s invitation of love with all we encounter.
