Solemnity of Christmas The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The prophet Isaiah tells us that the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. Unto us a child will be born who will be called Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. He will rule in justice and peace forever. St. Paul tells Titus that the grace of God has appeared, saving all who await the appearance and glory of our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave himself to “deliver us from lawlessness and cleanse for himself a people as his own.” This light and hope become a reality as St. Luke tells the story of Jesus’ birth. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem to be enrolled for the census. Because there was no room for them at the inn, Mary gives birth to Jesus in a manger in the stable. The angel proclaims the good news of great joy; a savior has been born who is Christ the Lord. Isaiah 9:1-6 Titus 2:11-14 Luke 2:1-14

Fourth Sunday of Advent In the first reading, the prophet Micah foretells that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem. “His greatness shall reach the ends of the earth and he will be peace.” The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews tells the people that God desires obedience rather than sacrificial offerings. Christ came into the world to offer himself as the sacrifice of perfect obe-dience to God’s will, for the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of his people. In the gospel story of Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth, we hear Elizabeth’s declaration of faith, calling Mary the mother of her Lord. Filled with the Holy Spirit Elizabeth exclaims, “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Blessed are you who be-lieved that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” Micah 5:1-4a Hebrews 10:5-10 Luke 1:39-45

In order to allow sufficient time to prepare the Church for Christmas, there will not be a

8:30 am Mass on Monday, December 24, 2018.

Intentions that were scheduled for that mass have been moved to

Friday, December 28, 2018 at 8:30 am.

Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

This week we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the birth of our Savior on Christmas Day. This is a wonderful time of grace, joy and hope fulfilled. Our readings help us to focus on what is truly important in our lives: the bless-ings that God has bestowed on us, particularly the gift of the special people in our lives. Just as Jesus was born into our human family to show us the face of God’s love, so, too, in our lives, the grace of God is made present to us through those who love us. We share most fully in God’s divinity when we allow this love to enter our hearts, and then to return it to those around us. This is the great season of our Prince of Peace. Christ, born in a humble manger, calls us to let go of our pride and stubbornness. This is the season when we make a special effort to reconcile rela-tionships, forgiving those who have hurt us and honestly seeking forgiveness from those we have hurt. In response to God’s overwhelming generosity we are called to respond generously to the needs of those around us. The Christmas season invites us to be more kind, generous and open-hearted as we celebrate the miracle of Christmas with great joy and wonder. We hear the promise of salvation in our Advent readings. Nearly 800 years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Mi-cah foretells that the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem, one of the most insignificant towns in Judea. From this hum-ble beginning, his kingdom will reach the ends of the earth and he will bring peace forever. The author of Hebrews tells us that Christ has come to bring a New Covenant that will last forever. In Luke’s gospel story, Elizabeth is preg-nant with John the Baptist. When Mary greets her, the infant leaps in her womb because he (John) recognizes the Messiah present in Mary’s womb. Elizabeth pronounces Mary blessed because she believed that what was spoken by the Lord would be fulfilled. The message that the angel Gabriel gave to Mary at the Annunciation was that the child she would conceive would be called Emmanuel “God with us” who will save his people from their sins. At Christmas this promise is fulfilled. Isaiah says that those who walked in darkness have seen a great light. And this light will bring us abundant joy because the yoke of burden will be lifted. The child to be born will bring peace and salvation and his kingdom will last forever. St Paul tells us that the grace of God has appeared in the person of Jesus Christ, bringing salvation and deliverance from evil. In the gospel the message is made known to the shepherds as the angel announces the fulfillment of God’s promise: “I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.” As we celebrate with great joy this great gift of our salvation, may we all experience the warmth of God’s love. May we share that love, peace and reconciliation with one another. In a special way I would like to welcome all those who are visiting us here at St. Robert’s, all who are returning home to spend the holidays with your families and all those who have been away from the Church. To all our parish family, may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you this Christmas and throughout the coming year. Wall Calendars for 2019, courtesy of Lawrence Funeral Home, are available at the back of church and in the rectory. We are providing a complimentary copy of Edward Sri’s new book, “Into His Likeness” to our parishioners and those who attend our Christmas masses. Edward Sri works with college students and writes a practical way that we can re-ally follow Jesus in the ordinary events of life. Please take only one copy per family, so that everyone can enjoy this exciting journey with Jesus. Thank you to everyone who hosted our holiday celebrations: the Simbang Gabi Mass and Dinner, the SPRED Christmas Party, the Holly/Hobby Fair, the Christmas Pageant and the Volunteer Appreciation lunch. These festive occasions brightened up our lives and made us all feel appreciated during this very busy time. Pleases keep in your prayers all who will be alone this Christmas, those who are mourning the loss of a loved one and those who are struggling to find a reason for joy. Let us pray for the safe return of the men and women of our armed services, for the people of Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, and, in this season of peace, for an end to war and violence. Have a Blessed, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. In the peace of Christ, Fr. Neil
