Explore one or more of the 9 bays and 36 beaches of Huatulco, which offer more than enough opportunities for fun in the sun.


There are also archaeological sites to explore, rivers to raft, and waterfalls whose pools invite childlike splashing.


Bird lovers will also enjoy the Huatulco region which is home to more than 225 bird species, like the wildly colorful orange-breasted bunting (left) and citreoline trogon (right).

One of the region's most politically and socially stable nations, Nicaragua has been billed as the next great spot for eco-cultural and culinary tourism.

Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica Sunday, October 11 – 8 am to 6 pm

Puerto Caldera (Puntarenas), Costa Rica is within easy day-trip distance of the country's multiple national parks.


Venture out to explore the variety of this Central American country's outdoor attractions and activities including gushing waterfalls,


sightseeing near active volcanoes, bird-watching in nature reserves and sanctuaries,


and horseback riding on Pacific beaches.

Sailing through the Panama Canal Tuesday, October 13 – 5 am to 7 pm

Today we marvel at one of the world's great engineering wonders, the Panama Canal. Wake up early this morning as we enter the locks in Balboa to begin our 48-mile journey from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea at Colon.


Traveling between these two cities, an epic tale unfolds before you—an old-school feat of engineering, ambition and courage.


As David McCullough recounts in his sweeping history The Path Between the Seas, it was a combination of sheer human might and engineering prowess that today allows ships to cross the Panama isthmus, saving sailors from making the dangerous, almost 8,000-mile journey around the tip of South America.


As we cruise through the canal, keep watch for one of the more than 100 species of mammals and reptiles or some of the 500 different birds which thrive in the nature reserves along the length of the canal.


In the evening, roughly around 7 pm, we will make our way through the locks in Colon and into the Caribbean.

Oranjestad, Aruba Thursday, October 15 – 8 am to 5 pm

Located off the coast of Venezuela, the windswept Dutch island of Aruba is otherworldly.


Here, the beaches are spectacularly pristine, the waters are romantically restless,


the island interior is lunar-like and filled with cacti, and the trees are—quite famously—bent in the wind.


The main port and capital city, Oranjestad, is a maze of Dutch-colonial architecture painted in a palette of Caribbean pastels. There are some historic sites of note and myriad shops, from boutiques to megastores, selling all sorts of keepsakes, with jewelry and gold being popular items.


And the underwater adventures in Aruba are quite spectacular as well.
