SAM DAWPORTFOLIO
I am a second-year student studying towards a Graphic Design
degree at University of the West of England, Bristol.
As a designer I always stay curious of the world around me and
work with purpose, enthusiasm and initiative. I am hard working
and perform well independently and as part of a team. I strive
to be professional and achieve quality in my work. I am open-
minded and relish new experiences and ideas.
The exchange at Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst Gent will push me
out of my comfort zone opening my mind to new levels of design
and culture. Your facilities are another reason why I would love
to study with you. Your focus on multi disciplinary teaching and
workshops appeals to me, as my style of work is constantly
changing and I work across several different mediums. I believe
that the learning community of Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst Gent
will broaden my knowledge of contemporary art and design.
Design is an integral part of my life and source of enjoyment.
The exchange represents an opportunity of a lifetime and I would
like to develop my design skills and career you.
Thank you for considering of my application

This project demonstrates my experience in communicating with images.
The brief was to portray ten different descriptive words using ten un-edited photographs of a
particular object. The final outcome was a double-sided A2 poster which can be folded down to
A5. The folded poster sits inw an outer package that has a key that links the images to adjectives.
Photographic sequence exploring narrative and my fascination with a discarded camera. Printed
on A2 recycled paper with a large illustration on the reverse. I was interested in how I could lead
the viewer’s eye around the poster. This piece was created using three of my favourite computer
programs, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
This hand rendered poster was designed to advertise Bristol City Museum and its numerous
artefacts. I wanted to promote our interest in the minor details of objects.
I explored eleven random objects within the museum and illustrated the details that interested
me. The abstract sketches link to a key that describes the object.
I have explored several different methods of printing and my preferred method is screen-printing
where I enjoying working on a large scale experimenting with colour and technique.
Below: Print of imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. The binary code reads ‘Free Liu
Xiaobo’ and relates to his name being censored in Chinese media.
66 x 86 cm
Right: Layered portrait.
66 x 49 cm
Top Right: Collaborative exhibition.
Lower left: Four colour print of a missing person.
220 x 155 cm
Lower middle: Print inspired by LP and EP covers and released for international record day.
90 x 90 cm
Lower right: Mug shot diptych with abstract printed background.
69 x 100 cm
This is a typeface I created based on the theme of repetition and regularity. I explored my ideas
through sketches and photographs before creating the type using an online font-building tool
called FontStruct.
The second part of the project was to produce a type specimen booklet to advertise my font.
I created a pamphlet that folds into to an A3 poster.

Stills from a stop motion animation developing a narrative sequence of a discarded
camera. Created using paper cut outs and editing using iMovie. The sound was created
by recording people’s vocal reaction to the animation and mixed using LogicPro.

Stills from a thirty second collaborative film. I created the imagery in response to a fellow
students song entitled, “lost, the sound of my summer”. I animated different layers of
video and effects using AfterEffects.

Since I a young age I have always had a camera by my side and I love to explore
my ideas through photography. I am competent at developing my own film and
processing prints as well as using digital SLR cameras. I am interested in long
exposures, portraits and capturing/documenting environments.
I have produced and sold pottery with the Upwey Potters. I am competent at throwing on a wheel and have a good knowledge of finishing techniques and glaze.
Left: Thrown stoneware bowl with layered glaze.22 x 6 cm
Right: Thrown stoneware jugs with multiple opaque and transparent glazes.15 x 20 cm and 13 x 15 cm
I also enjoy creating large-scale acrylic and oil paintings. I use expressive marks and
a considered palette of colours to give the viewer a feel of particular environment.
Left: Acrylic on textured canvas. Capturing the movement of the ocean spray.
