May 2013 S AM N E W S Greetings from Executive Director Paul Peterson Effective April 1, 2013, a new policy went into effect at each of the Covenant Retirement Communities (CRC). The policy benefits residents who wish to take an extended absence from the campus. As part of the residency agreement, residents of CRC pay for meals per day through their monthly service fee. The residency agreement states that there is no credit in the monthly service fee provided to residents for extended absences except as provided by corporate policy. Even when a resident is away from the campus, the majority of the costs of maintaining the individual apartment and common areas continues throughout the absence. However because the resident is not eating meals in the campus dining room, an adjustment may be provided in the monthly service fee. To be eligible for the extended absence meal credit, a resident is absent from his/her apartment for fourteen (14) or more consecutive days and paying the full monthly service fee. Residents wishing to apply for meal credits according to the new policy will complete CRC Form #503 which will be verified by the executive director or designee. The form is available at the reception desk in the administration building. When the adjustment is made to the monthly statement, it is done retroactively after the resident has been absent from his/her apartment for fourteen (14) or more consecutive days. An adjustment is not made in anticipation of an absence. Greetings from Executive DirectorPaul PetersonEffective April 1, 2013, a new policy went into effect at each of the Covenant Retirement Communities (CRC).

SAM NEWSHe Lives By  Chaplain  Sherry  Peterson

We have celebrated Easter Day and the church calendar gives us six Sundays in the Season of Easter until we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. On these Sundays, we focus on the resurrection appearances of Jesus to his disciples and many more. While many struggle with how this can be true, I want to bear witness to the fact that I experience the “living presence of Jesus” in my days right here. The Easter hymn “He Lives” says it this way:

I serve a living Savior, he’s in the world today;I know that he is living, whatever some may say;I see his hand of mercy, I hear his voice of cheer,And just the time I need him he’s always near.He lives, he lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.He lives, he lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart.

During these last months we’ve had many more deaths than usual. We’ve said goodbye to long-time residents and to those who were with us just a day or two. It is our great privilege to get to care for each person and to get to be present at the moment of death. For all of us, it is a very holy time, much as is the birth of a child; one is entering the world, another is leaving this world. I never cease to be in awe! I also get to witness the loving care our staff gives to residents! They come to love those they serve and they have a difficult time saying goodbye.

Sometimes in the days or hours before death, a resident will reach out as if to greet someone or to take one’s hand. Other times they may speak to family members who have gone before. Scripture at this time often brings great comfort to both residents and their families even when they haven’t been religious. Recently, one non-religious family asked me to read Psalm 23 after I’d read several others to their mother. It was their grandmother’s favorite. As I spoke verse 6, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever,” the resident breathed her last breath. This has happened very many times—often at verse 3! Each time I am in awe at how the Spirit works. I get to see “his hand of mercy” and to experience his life in action.

Opera Night May 15th by John Menudier A very recent production of "La Boheme" will be our last presentation for the 2012-2013 season. This Boheme was the talk of the 2012 Salzburg Festival, the first production of Puccini's timeless masterpiece ever given there, in a bold and meticulously observed contemporary staging. A top flight cast brings a thoroughly modern perspective to the chaotic lives and tragic loves of the young Bohemians. Join us and experience the vivid contrast   to the traditional Boheme we presented for the very first "Opera at The Samarkand" in September 2005 (yes, eight years ago!) with Teresa Stratas who has retired from the operatic scene, and Placido Domingo who still sings but, now, as a baritone. Conductor Daniele Gatti leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Salzburg Festspiele Choir. Anna Netrebko gorgeously sings Mimi, Nino Machaidze sings Musetta, while Piotr Beczala and Massimo Cavalletti sing Rodolfo and Marcello.  The performance is sung in Italian with excellent English subtitles. Join us for "La Boheme" at the Samarkand Opera House (a.k.a. The Mountain Room) on Wednesday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m.

SAM NEWS

Ying, a personal care aide at Brandell, was born in Gui Lin, Guang Xi Province, China. Many tourists visit Gui Lin because of its beauty. In fact, the Allaways have a framed picture of her home town in their apartment.

Ying grew up in a family that loved music. She has three brothers and one sister. Her father taught music in a high school and the family had their own band. She has made a CD with her siblings.

Ying became an RN in China and worked in hospitals, eventually teaching nursing. She also learned to drive there and says driving in the USA is safer and cars in the USA are better made than Chinese automobiles.

Ying and her husband, Allen, met over the Internet. He came to visit her three times before she came here. They were married at SBCC in a Transcendental Meditation ceremony. She wore a red dress, and “it was a wonderful occasion,” she says.

Allen has a business selling objects made of imported stone; he has over twenty fountains and large slabs of many kinds of stone for sale. The business is so successful that they are opening a new store this month. Her twenty-one year old son also works in the business. Ying says they have made a very peaceful life in Ojai and people like to visit their store for the sounds from the fountains and the cool, relaxing atmosphere there.

At home, they have two special pets: a Labrador retriever, Chocco, and Lucky, a playful kitty. Chocco has a “big heart and is a calm, friendly dog, while Lucky, who adopted us, has learned from him.” Ying believes that animals can teach us a lot.

Based on American culture, older people are not valued. She thinks that in China older people are “highly regarded, shown respect, bring luck to our lives and they want to be treated like kings and queens.” She likes working here because residents are “surprised by my attention and interest in them and they appreciate everything I do. That makes me feel good.”

Mother’s  Love Her love is likean island in life’s ocean, vast and wideA peaceful, quiet shelterFrom the wind, the rain, the tide.’Tis bound on the north by Hope,By Patience on the West,By tender Counsel on the SouthAnd on the East by Rest.Above it like a beacon lightShine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer; And thro’ the changing scenes of lifeI find a haven there. SAM NEWSMusic  and  Motion  in  Assisted  Livingby Therese Brown, Assisted Living Director

To the casual calendar reader, it probably is not always clear why a particular program is on the schedule in Heritage Court or Brandel Hall. Why do the Amazing Grays conduct a sing-a-long? What is JoyMo? Why are there regular Player Piano concerts and music programs?

The answer to those questions is in the music. Research has shown that music therapy is an increasingly effective treatment strategy for dementia patients. As dementia progresses many seniors find the slow descent into memory loss a frustrating reality that is very difficult to accept. These emotions can lead to anger and aggression on the part of the dementia sufferer. Music therapists have discovered, however, that we all have a “music memory” that seems to function well even in spite of a debilitating illness like Alzheimer's or dementia. Seniors suffering from this disease can find a much needed respite with music when it taps this memory, bringing back thoughts of happy times connected with familiar songs. These familiar tunes relieve anxiety creating joyful faces as residents move, tap, hum or sing to the music. Heritage Court Program Coordinator Val Maxey understands the important role that music plays in enhancing the quality of life. “Music stimulates the long term memories of our residents with dementia which adds significant therapeutic value to our programming.” Val invites all Samarkand residents to join her in experiencing the joy of music.

SAM NEWS

Everyone  Deserves  Music!by  Lois  Okerstrom

This was the bumper sticker on the car of our church organist and choir director in the Bay Area, before we moved to Samarkand. These words are also incentive for the Amazing Grays who offer their time and musical talents to the residents at the Smith Health Center and Heritage Court.

These musical Amazing Grays have a variety of talent which they share enthusiastically and often. Roger Ferris comes once a month with trombone in hand, bringing a CD accompaniment to add a full and rich background to his instrument as he plays Dixieland, jazz and old popular tunes. He explains his instrument and gets full attention. There is a lot of toe-tapping going on when Roger plays!

Two faithful pianists come regularly. Halleine Morrison plays beautiful music once a month in Garden Court. Marilyn Birchfield plays twice a month in SHC, both solos and for sing-a-longs. The latter feature the old favorites. Who among us does not remember them? Starting off always with “The More We Get Together,” favorites like “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” and “Bicycle Built for Two” follow. While some residents may not converse much, almost all respond to music. They remember the lyrics and eagerly clap or foot tap. Amazing Grays who regularly join in the Sing-a-Longs are Jane Ayres, Betty Jane Houk, Mary Kershaw, Joy Nelson and Char Watkins.

Musical offerings always anticipated are George Gilmour’s Handbell Choir who come twice a year and a group brought by Joan Hotop who play recorders beautifully. A big and hearty thank you to all these “music-makers.” We appreciate you!

And while not Amazing Grays, we want to pay tribute and give big applause as well to the Linnard Family, the parental family of Smith’s Activity Director, Heather Conrad. They are all musical and all generous in giving their time. Heather plays the piano every weekday at 4 pm; she also is adept with the flute and plays it often. Brother Loren is an able vocalist and pianist.

Sister Luanne plays a beautiful orchestral harp. These three gave a memorable and beautiful performance together celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with many wonderful Irish songs. The Conrad father always reminded his children, “If you’re thinking about marrying someone, remind them they have to pass the family’s musical audition first!”

Heather sums up the music contributions of the Amazing Grays: “Your music brings a smile to many faces and always lifts the spirits!”

From the Health Care Administrator’s DeskBy Dwayne GabrielsonWhen you read this, your reaction might be, “What is the big deal about getting this accomplished?”   But let me tell you, it is very important that this occurred.   On Monday afternoon, I received a letter from the California Department of Public Health and I was contemplating what it might be.  Was there an incident that required a plan of correction?  What else might it be?

As I opened the envelope and took out the single piece of paper inside, I realized it was our license which allows us to do business for another year. This year, it meant coming up with a check for the annual licensing fee of over $19,000.  It also meant filling out a form and mailing to Sacramento with our payment.  Part of the form went to our California Department of Public Health Office in Oxnard answering questions regarding ownership of the facility and any changes that might have occurred in the last year. This year we had another form from the State, an HS 215 A, that each CRC board member had to fill out and sign and get back to me so we could submit it with the application to renew our license.

You may remember information that Paul Peterson or John Notehelfer shared with you that the Covenant Hospital in Turlock was being sold to the Tenet Healthcare Corporation and the 145 bed Skilled Nursing Facility run by Emanuel Hospital was going to now be run by Covenant Village of Turlock. This also required that this HS 215 A form be filled out by the CRC board members. What a blessing to have these forms filled out at the same time.

Also, as I thought through all the events of this year and remembered the old self-reported incidents that have since been resolved and how we were able to regain our 5 Star Nursing Home Status for The Samarkand Skilled Nursing Facility, I realized we had so much to be thankful for. To receive something so vitally important, like a license to operate, is not as easy as one might think. But in the end, it is great to work through the obstacles and get that important piece of paper. Maybe you have heard me say, “Some miracles just take a little longer.”   And yes, a license is very important because we want to be able to serve you when you need us, so we give thanks even for such a basic need being met, in just the right way and at just the appropriate time.
