Object buildings are nOt the answer. True brilliance of design lies in solutions that unite all the characteristics of a project. It is an architect’s responsibility to act as the mediator between these forces that shape the building. Some will be conflicting and others harmonious. To emphasize one at the expense of another is careless when we consider that WE design the human environment. I believe every building I create should view its image as only one part of a complex web of considerations that include how the building respects its surroundings and inspires its community.

Implanting itself between a 14th Century Basilca and 21st Century Pallazo, the atrium connects a deep history of Palladian order and harmony with contemporary theory.

When a building is properly designed for its urban context it not only satisfies its own spatial requirements, but also those of the resulting public space. These contextual requirements include: creating enclosure using similar datum lines (above, left) and thresholds that eminate from piazza corners, eliminating areas where activity would be sparse (far left).

The site section compares the programmatic elements in relation to size and height from the piazze ground plane. To coincide with the large basilica room, the meeting rooms are connected through the atrium to the new addition, with public offices below and the Palladio Museum above.

The building’s program requires connecting the basilica main room to a multitude of support spaces, consisting of meeting rooms, an auditorium and museum spaces. To make these transitions cohesive, the whole process is fed through the atrium space, where a system of platforms, bridges and elevators connects these building activites with the public realm.

At the intersection of mass transit and urban housing, wildlife creates its own niche, utilizing a forest plaza as a stepping stone to other habitats; while we appreciate native tree canopies and cleansing bioswales.

Natural landscape merges with the urban form though bioswales, vegetative roofs and retention wetlands to heighten awareness of both systems (above). Sidewalks integrate bioswales into the entry transition of the residential development while a series of vegetavive roofs and planters step down the housing terraces to the public wetland at the center of the site (below).

Street trees and bioswales work in concert with a network of tree cores to act as wildlife corridors for urban animals (above). Creating safe migration routes through the city is one aspect of preserving natural habitats on site, the second is achieving privacy for both animals and humans using natural processes such as rainwater and diverse vegetation types around live-work units and other public areas (below).

The building is situated to capture the southern light filtering in the enveloping canopy while buffering heavy automobile traffic to the north. Historic elements and renewable water features are strategically placed throughout the building to educate youth about environmental issues.

In the city built on the sea, the studio calls upon historical Venetian space planning while presenting a facade modern in materials but deriving from local orders.

The plan derives from the combination of the surrounding building’s construction to create a pivoting column structure (above left). The facade responds to this pivot, leaving a “rift” space along the Grand Canal where glass balconies and boat moorings occur (above, previous page). The interior is laid out to simplify the complex shape of the site, placing the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms in a simple block on the west edge (above).

Italian medieval cities are recognized for their cohesive spatial planning. Here a city’s buildings and the public square -known as piazza- share an intimate relationship between solid and void.

A building’s characteristics play a major role in shaping the “street room” in which they reside. Height, entryways, window placement and datum-lines influence the feel of the space and therefore need to cooperate within their context.Piazza Anfiteatro, Lucca

Recognizing the importance of material use in building forms and details is easiest when your classroom includes over two centuries of historical architecture, where material are used as determinants of form, space and decoration.
