Salvia divinorum (also known as Diviner's Sage Ska Mara Pastora Seer'sSage, and by its genus name Salvia) is a psychoactive plant which can

inducedissociative effects and is a potent producer of "visions" and otherhallucinatory experiences. Its native habitat is within cloud forest in theisolated Sierra Mazateca ofOaxaca, Mexico, where it grows in shady and moistlocations. The plant grows to over a meter high, has hollow square stems, largeleaves, and occasional white flowers with violet calyxes. Botanists have notdetermined whetherSalvia divinorum is a cultigen or a hybrid; native plantsreproduce vegetatively, rarely producing viable seed.

Salvia divinorum is native to the Sierra Mazateca in Oaxaca, Mexico, where itis still used by the Mazatec, primarily to facilitate shamanic visions in thecontext of curing or divination. S. divinorum is one of several species withhallucinogenic properties that are ritually used by Mazatec shamans. The history of the plant is not well known, and there has been no definitiveanswer to the question of its origin. Speculation includes Salvia divinorumbeing a wild plant native to the area; a cultigen of the Mazatecs; or a cultigenintroduced by another indigenous group. Botanists have also not been able todetermine whether it is a hybrid or a cultigen.

The salvia has no negative side effects. Only a small number of people report headaches, insomnia and irritation of the lungs after smoking salvia. It is believed that these effects are

caused by the products resulting from combustion smoke to any type of plant, and not by

    salvinorin.

It is virtually impossible to overdose on salvia when it is normally used. A fatal dose has not

been established, but many scientists believe is quite high. Probably desmaias before you get

close to a fatal dose. But if you use a higher dose of salvinorin risks are much greater. This

    should be avoided.
