At the banquet offered to commence filming
the movie ¨ Welcome Mary ¨ which was financed by
Cantinflas, and produced by his son Mario Arturo
Moreno Ivanova, in which I took part in the production,
I went to the table that was assigned to me and an
actress, showing cleavage, knowing that I was part of
the production, insinuated and provocatively asked me to give her a role in the
film, insisting she was willing to do anything to get it. At that time, I had to
excuse myself to go speak to the manager. Upon return, there were more
people at the table and one of them asked me: ¨Hey Father, what time do we
leave tomorrow for the shooting?” This surprised the aforementioned actress,
who with disbelief, had asked if I had a role as Father in the film. When I said
that I was a Priest, she was immediately embarrassed, modestly buttoned up
her shirt and said, as she looked down, ¨Nice to meet you, Father¨. From that
moment on, the conversation was focused on questions about how to approach
God, being in the artistic world.
Many interesting points are emphasized in the todays Gospel
passage. Jesus, being a Jew, asks a Samaritan woman to give him something
to drink. The woman is surprised by this, because Jews and Samaritans did not
treat each other mutually, due to their difference of opinion on where they
should praise God; whether at the well of Jacob or the Temple of Jerusalem, to
which Jesus replied that God is praised not in one place, but in spirit and truth.
Surely, before the uncommon personality of Jesus, this woman is attracted to
him and perhaps takes his approach in a very different way than those of
Jesus' intentions, therefore, when He asks her to bring her husband, thinking
that He may be a good prospect, she replied that she had no husband, to which
Jesus answers “True indeed”, since she has had five and the one living with
her is not her husband. Her attitude changes, when, much to her surprise, she
realizes that she is talking to a prophet. When Jesus reveals that he is the
Messiah, she becomes a messenger of the Good News and communicates it to
everyone, who, believing what she says, follow Him.
Moreover, the Apostles are surprised to see Jesus talking with a
woman, since according to Jewish custom, to this very day among Orthodox
Jews, men do not talk to women unless it is extremely necessary. Jesus
breaks this rule recognizing the dignity of women, as He does with his mother
Mary, Mary Magdalene, and all women He encounters, who eventually become
fervent followers with active participation in the Church He founded.
The Apostles offered him food and Jesus surely seizes the moment
to joke with them and evangelize stating He has nourishment they do not
know about; which is to do the will of His Father, and invites them to take part
in this Divine Mission.
When the people, invited by the Samaritan, arrive, they are
surprised by the teachings of Jesus’, who stays with them for two days, and as
a result, tell the woman of the well: ¨We no longer believe because of what
you've told us, for we ,ourselves, have heard and know that He is the Savior
of the World¨.
Most of us have had faith inherited from our parents and since
childhood were taught Catechism. But it is not until we have a personal
encounter with Christ in our lives, that we take in the immense love He has for
us. That is, when we recognize Him as our Savior, we become not passive
recipients, but rather fervent messengers of the Gospel, making known to
others what we ourselves have received from Him, so that others believe, not
by what we say, but by what they, themselves discover from the love of God
in their own lives
LA SAMARITANA
Pbro. Jorge A. Román
SAINT JOSEPH
Everything we know about the husband of Mary and
the foster father of Jesus comes from Scripture and that has
seemed too little for those who made up legends about him.
We know he was a carpenter, a working man, for the
skeptical Nazarenes ask about Jesus, "Is this not the
carpenter's son?" (Matthew 13:55). He wasn't rich for when he
took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be
purified he offered the sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of
pigeons, allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb
(Luke 2:24).
Despite his humble work and means, Joseph came
from a royal lineage. Luke and Matthew disagree some about
the details of Joseph's genealogy but they both mark his
descent from David, the greatest king of Israel (Matthew 1:1-
16 and Luke 3:23-38). Indeed the angel who first tells Joseph
about Jesus greets him as "son of David," a royal title used also
for Jesus.
We know Joseph was a compassionate, caring man.
When he discovered Mary was pregnant after they had been
betrothed, he knew the child was not
his but was as yet unaware that she was
carrying the Son of God. He planned to
divorce Mary according to the law but
he was concerned for her suffering and
safety. He knew that women accused to
adultery could be stoned to death, so he
decided to divorce her quietly and not
expose her to shame or cruelty
(Matthew 1:19-25).
We know Joseph was man of
faith, obedient to whatever God asked
of him without knowing the outcome.
When the angel came to Joseph in a
dream and told him the truth about the
child Mary was carrying, Joseph
immediately and without question or
concern for gossip, took Mary as his
wife. When the angel came again to tell
him that his family was in danger, he
immediately left everything he owned, all
his family and friends, and fled to a
strange country with his young wife and
the baby. He waited in Egypt without
question until the angel told him it was safe to go back
(Matthew 2:13-23).
We know Joseph loved Jesus. His one concern was
for the safety of this child entrusted to him. Not only did he
leave his home to protect Jesus, but upon his return settled in
the obscure town of Nazareth out of fear for his life. When
Jesus stayed in the Temple we are told Joseph (along with
Mary) searched with great anxiety for three days for him (Luke
2:48). We also know that Joseph treated Jesus as his own son
for over and over the people of Nazareth say of Jesus, "Is this
not the son of Joseph?" (Luke 4:22)
We know Joseph respected God. He followed God's
commands in handling the situation with Mary and going to
Jerusalem to have Jesus circumcised and Mary purified after
Jesus' birth. He is a model as a father, husband, and a honest
man and hard worker.
SAN JOSÉ
ESPOSO DE MARÍA y PADRE VIRGINAL DE JESUS
silencio" No conocemos palabras ex-
San Mateo (1:16) llama a San José
solo prometida a José.

Remarks by Bishop Stephen Blaire at the Stand With Us Rally at the Sacramento State Capitol on Wednesday March 15, 2017
Good Afternoon Everyone! Today here in Sacramento we stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors who are without papers and are being unjustly targeted and vilified. For too long our broken immigration system has needed to be fixed. For too long undocumented people have been living in the shadows. For too long we have needed reform that gives immigrants without papers a path to legalization with an eye to becoming citizens. As one necessary step forward we strongly support SB 54, the California Values Act, as well as SB 31 and SB 6. We do this because the rush to increase enforcement and deportations without reforming the system only leads to human rights violations and disregard for human dignity. Today we stand in public witness to accompany our suffering brothers and sisters. But also let us not forget the power of prayer. Jesus taught us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. We pray that they will have a change of heart. We pray because all things are possible with the grace of God. But above all let our prayer be "the cries of the poor." Amen. MASS FROM MONDAY TO FRIDAY - At 7 am in the Rectory. Come to Mass and stay for
coffee and meet new friends after the Celebration.
