To make owners and operators aware of the potential for personal injury caused by pressure build up in the transmission and recommend actions to avoid injuries.

Description

Sandvik has become aware of incidents where due to pressure build up in the transmission the dipstick was pushed out of its housing and hot oil discharged in the operator's cabin.

This is only applicable to machines manufactured prior to 2015 where the dipstick is located in the operator's cabin. In later models (LS 151, LS171, LS 191, LS190-B) the dipstick is located under the transmission bay cover.

Pressure can build up in the transmission due to hydraulic pump seal failure or when the incorrect breather is installed. The correct breather is a two-way breather with part number A2U450-592062. This breather looks similar to the one way breather used on the hydraulic tank (A2U220-592056) which holds pressure until the relief setting is reached. The only method of differentiating the two breathers is that the hydraulic tank breather has a decal on the side with the pressure setting. See picture 2 and 3.

Recommendations

1. Check if the machine has the dipstick located in the operator's cabin. If it is not located in thecabin disregard this Technical Bulletin. See picture1.

2. Check if the correct two-way transmission breather A2U450-592062 is fitted to the transmission.Refer to picture 2 and 3.

3. Fit over toggle clamp and clip (part# A2U900-252062) to the dipstick cover to minimize thepotential for oil spill and the resultant risk of injury. See picture 4. Installation can be completedby either welding or using 4 off M4 x 8mm SHCS (part# 445800461 ).

4. At next overhaul or transmission replacement, Sandvik recommend relocation of the dipstick tothe transmission bay by fitting dipstick kit BU00033826. See Appendix A. This requires thetransmission to be removed from the machine. The kit consists of all parts to relocate thedipstick plus a gas strut to assist in opening the transmission bay cover from the cabin.
