Purpose

To notify the owners and operators of Sandvik Bolter Miners it has come to our attention that installations of Trolex TX6383 Flammable Gas Sensor/Transmitters and associated intrinsically safe components installed on our equipment may be operating outside of the prescribed intrinsically safe entity parameters.

Description

All Sandvik Bolter Miners are fitted with a methane system to monitor the concentration of methane gas in the air directly surrounding the machine. As part of this system the gas concentration level is measured by the methane sensor heads and the intrinsically safe signal is transmitted to the control system located in the safe area via an intrinsically safe current repeater. The measured gas concentration level is transmitted to the control system only for display on the operator display screens.

The intrinsically safe signal is a 4-20mA current loop driven by the flammable gas sensor/transmitters which source power from the methane system controller. It is an inherent property of a current loop to drive the signal current around the loop irrespective of circuit resistance so long as the maximum voltage drop is not exceeded. This remains true for the flammable gas sensor/transmitters under fault conditions meaning that there is a potential for the maximum fault current Io to be present irrespective of circuit resistance or any installed current limiting resistors.

This document shall be incorporated in the "information of use" documentation and kept there for the life of the product.

Unless otherwise specified, Sandvik accepts no responsibility for changes, labour or replacements incurred from this bulletin.

The current repeaters which are most commonly used in the methane system on Sandvik Bolter Miners are MTL Instruments MTL5541 and Pepperl + Fuchs KFD2-STC4-Ex1. A copy of the relevant certificates of conformity for each component are attached to this bulletin for reference.

Recommendations

1. All owners and operators of Sandvik Bolter Miners should verify whether their machine is affected by this bulletin by reviewing the machine documentation and/or physically inspecting the machine. NOTE: Those machines which are fitted with Trolex TX6383.84.01.11.240 flammable gas sensor/transmitters which are configured as 0.4-2Vdc voltage output will not be affected by this bulletin.

2. The potential Io of the flammable gas sensor/transmitters is defined in the certificate of conformity ANZEx 12.3021X Issue 0 and AUS Ex 02.3842X Issue 2 as 322mA(peak). Where the allowable Ii of the current repeaters is exceeded by the potential Io of the flammable gas sensor/transmitters then the current repeaters should temporarily be removed from the sensor current loop. NOTE: If the current repeaters are removed from the sensor current loop the methane concentration will no longer be shown on the operator display screens. This will have no impact on machine functionality or affect the high methane concentration warning and trip functions which are provided by the methane system controller independent of the machine control system.

3. The current repeaters can be re-connected into the sensor current loop if a suitably certified intrinsically safe fuse is installed in series to limit the maximum fault current below the allowable Ii of the current repeaters.

The Austdac Io Thermal Limiter FWT-0050-1 is an example of a certified fuse that would be suitable for installation with both the MTL5541 and KFD2-STC4-Ex1 current repeaters. A copy of the product datasheet and certificate of conformity is attached to this bulletin for reference.

THERMAL Io LIMITER TYPE FWT1

DESCRIPTION

The thermal Io limiter type FWT1 is an intrinsically safe Io current limiter that may be used to match a load maximum input current (Ii) to a power supply maximum output current (Io). The Io limiter is particularly useful when constructing panels or systems with multiple intrinsically safe loads powered from the same intrinsically safe power source. Occasionally one or several of the loads may have an Ii entity parameter that is lower than the Io entity parameter of the power supply, making the connection of the load to the power source unsafe. The thermal Io limiter type FWT1 solves this problem by providing an Ii parameter that is suitable for the power source and an Io parameter that is suitable for the load. The FWT1 is simply wired in series with the positive supply lead from the power source to the load with the low Ii parameter. Other loads connected directly to the power source are unaffected by the FWT1. The Uo parameter of the power source and the Ui parameter of the load are unaffected by the Io thermal limiter type FWT1 and still require assessment in accordance with IEC/AS/NZS 60079-25. The FWT1 has two identical output circuits each with a separate fuse, these two circuits can be used to power individual loads or one circuit can be kept in reserve in case the first circuit fuse is ruptured due to a high load.

Never connect the two individual output circuits together to obtain higher output currents. The FWT1 has a Ui entity parameter of 16.0 volts making it suitable for most installations encountered in coal mining applications. The FWT1 is available with maximum Io output currents ranging from 85mA to 1700mA. The thermal Io limiter is housed in a small IP20 (NEMA Type 1) DIN rail mounting enclosure measuring 75mm (H) x 17mm (W) x 52.5mm (D) (2.95" (H) x 0.67" (W) x 2.07" (D)) making it suitable for mounting in panels or enclosures where space is at a premium. The FWT1 must be housed within an enclosure having a minimum ingress protection rating of IP54 (NEMA Type 3). CERTIFICATION

The thermal Io limiter is IECEx certified for use in group I hazardous areas under certificate IECEx TSA 10.0030X Ex ia I. If the FWT1 is used in a hazardous area it must be fitted inside a host enclosure rated IP54 (NEMA Type 3) or greater.

Additional Information concerning the MTL 55XX range of Barrier Isolator Interfaces Detailed Product Description The MTL5510 Switch / Proximity Detector Interface is designed to restrict the transfer of energy from the unspecified non-hazardous area apparatus to four intrinsically safe circuits by limitation of voltage and current. An isolating transformer and an opto-coupler provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry. Each channel of the MTL5510 monitors either a detector or a switch in the hazardous area and controls a non-hazardous area load via a solid state output. The apparatus comprises an isolating transformer, an opto-coupler, zener diodes and resistors to provide voltage and current limitation. The above, together with other electronic components are mounted on a single printed circuit board (PCB) and housed in moulded plastic enclosure. Polarised plugs and sockets are provided for hazardous and non-hazardous area connections. LED indication is provided to indicate power-on, the status of each output and Line Fault Detection (LFD). The MTL5510B Multifunction Digital Input Interface has the same hazardous area circuitry and parameters as the MTL5510 but has a different configuration via the removal of a link in the non-hazardous area circuitry. The MTL5513 Switch / Proximity Detector Interface is a depopulated version of the MTL5510, using the same PCB and enclosure having only two channels populated. The MTL5511 / MTL5514 / MTL5516C / MTL5517 Switch / Proximity Detector Interface are designed to restrict the transfer of energy from unspecified non-hazardous area apparatus to up to two intrinsically safe circuits by limitation of voltage and current. A transformer and relays provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry. Each channel of the interface monitors either a detector or switch located in the hazardous area and controls non-hazardous area loads via relays. Some models of the interface are fitted with independent phase reverse controls and Line Fault Detection (LFD) circuitry allow an alarm condition to be signalled for either state, set by switches on the side of the interface. The apparatus comprises an isolating transformer, relays, zener diodes and current limiting resistors to provide voltage and current limitation on each channel. These, together with other electronic components are mounted on a single printed circuit board and housed in a plastic enclosure. Polarised plugs and sockets are provided for connection to the hazardous and non-hazardous area. LED indication is provided to indicate Power-on, state of the outputs and LFD status. The above listed models are all built on a common printed circuit board. The differences between the models relate to the configuration of relays and non-hazardous area connections. The MTL5521, 5522, 5523, 5524 and 5525 Series Solenoid / Alarm Drivers are designed to control and monitor a device located in the hazardous area and restrict the transfer of energy from unspecified apparatus in the non-hazardous area to an intrinsically safe circuit in the hazardous area by the limitation of voltage and current. A transformer and opto-isolators provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry. The apparatus comprises an isolating transformer, opto-isolators, duplicated zener diode chains and current limiting resistors to provide voltage and current limitation. The above, together with other electronic components are mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) and housed in a moulded plastic enclosure. Polarised plugs and sockets are provided for hazardous and non-hazardous area connections. The MTL552* Series Solenoid / Alarm Drivers comprise a number of different models denoted by * in the model number. All models are built on a common PCB and are configured have certain features such as Line Fault Detection

(LFD) and Phase Reversal facilities. There are also models in the range that are loop powered or have low current hazardous area outputs. All models have LED indication dependent on the model configuration. The MTL 5522 does NOT comply with IIC requirements. The MTL5544 Repeater Power Supply, 4/20mA for 2 or 3-Wire Transmitters is designed to provide a floating d.c. supply for energising two conventional 2 or 3-Wire 4/20mA transmitters or a ‘smart’ transmitter in the hazardous area and repeat these currents in the non-hazardous area, whilst restricting the transfer of energy from the unspecified non-hazardous area apparatus to the intrinsically safe circuits by the means of limitation of current and voltage. The apparatus also allows bi-directional signal communication between the hazardous and non-hazardous area by the connection of a hand-held communicator (HHC). The MTL5544 Repeater Power Supply, 4/20mA for 2 or 3-Wire Transmitters comprises four isolating transformers that provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry, zener diode chains and resistors providing voltage and current limitation. The above, together with other electronic components, are mounted on a single printed circuit board (PCB) and housed in a moulded plastic enclosure. Polarised plug and sockets are provided for the hazardous and non-hazardous area connections. All models are fitted with a power indication LED.

The MTL5541 Repeater Power Supply, 4/20mA for 2 or 3-Wire Transmitters is a depopulated version of the MTL5544 and has only one channel populated. The MTL5546 Single Channel Isolating Driver, 4/20mA for Smart I/P Converters accepts a 4/20mA signal from a controller located in the non-hazardous area to drive a load in the hazardous area. It permits bi-directional transmission of digital signals to and from an operator station or hand-held communicator. The apparatus restricts the transfer of energy from unspecified non-hazardous area apparatus to an intrinsically safe circuit by limitation of voltage and current. Three transformers provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry. The apparatus comprises a power transformer, two current transformers, zener diodes and current limiting resistors to provide voltage and current limitation. The above, together with other electronic components are mounted on a printed circuit board and housed in a moulded plastic enclosure. Polarised plugs and sockets are provided for hazardous and non-hazardous area connections. The MTL5549 2 Channel Isolating Driver, 4/20mA for Smart I/P Converters accepts up to two separate 4/20mA signals from controllers located in the non-hazardous to drive loads in the hazardous area. It permits bi-directional transmission of digital signals to and from an operator station or hand-held communicator. The apparatus restricts the transfer of energy from unspecified non-hazardous area apparatus to intrinsically safe circuits by limitation of voltage and current. Three transformers on each channel provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry. Each channel of the apparatus comprise a power transformer, two current transformers, zener diodes and current limiting resistors to provide voltage and current limitation. The above, together with other electronic components are mounted on a printed circuit board and housed in a moulded plastic enclosure. Polarised plugs and sockets are provided for hazardous and non-hazardous area connections. The MTL5575 Temperature Converter is designed to restrict the transfer of energy from unspecified non-hazardous area apparatus to either thermocouples or RTD’s located in the hazardous area by limitation of voltage and current. A transformer and opto-isolators provide galvanic isolation between the hazardous and non-hazardous area circuitry. The MTL5575 Temperature converter is designed for connection to thermocouples or two, three or four wire RTD’s situated in the hazardous area. The apparatus converts the low level d.c. signal from the sensor mounted in the hazardous area into a 4/20mA current for driving a load in the non-hazardous area. An optional cold junction compensation plug can be fitted to the hazardous area connections, which alters the internal connections and affects the output parameters. The apparatus comprises an isolating transformer, opto-isolators, duplicated zener diode chains and current limiting resistors to provide voltage and current limitation. The above, together with other electronic components are mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) and housed in a moulded plastic enclosure. Polarised plugs and sockets are provided

Equipment:

The KFD2-STC(V)4-Ex1(.2O)... Smart Transmitter Isolator is designed to provide galvanic isolation between intrinsically safe circuits in a hazardous area and circuits in a safe area and limit voltage and current into the hazardous area to intrinsically safe levels. The apparatus comprises a number of electrical components, including transformers, fuses, resistors and zener diodes, all mounted on a single printed circuit board and housed within a plastic enclosure fitted with terminals for external connections. The use of 'C' or 'V' in the type description specifies Current source / sink or Voltage respectively. Options following 'Ex1' in the type description are:

.2O (Dual non-hazardous area output) -Y… (Current sink - used with 'C') -1 (5 Volt - used with 'V') -2 (10 Volt - used with 'V')

The apparatus is designed to operate from a DC supply of up to 35V on terminals 7 to 12, 14 and 15, and power rail connector terminals 1 and 2. The segregation of the hazardous area circuits meets the requirements for 250V.

EQUIPMENT:

Equipment and systems covered by this certificate are as follows:

The equipment is designed to limit thermal output current of an intrinsically safe power supply. It consists of two fuses mounted on asingle PCB. Both fuses are connected together to the single supply input terminals 1, 2 and 3. There are two output terminals. Theoutput terminal 4 is connected to one fuse and the output terminal 6 is connected to other fuse. Therefore the thermal output current islimited by the rating of fuses used. The spark current is limited only by the input current supplied to this apparatus. All PCB tracks are 2mm wide. The PCB is mounted inside a plastic enclosure which is provided with DIN rail mounting. This has IP20 level of protection. Therefore apparatus is meant to be placed inside a host enclosure with IP54 rating when used in hazardous area. The screw terminalsare directly soldered on to the PCB.

Schedule EQUIPMENT:

The TX6383-Series Flammable Gas Sensor/Transmitters take a signal from a gas sensing head mounted on a sensor

board; this signal is conditioned and an analogue signal is then transmitted to other monitoring equipment.

The TX6383 comprises an output board, which is connected to two sensor-head boards and an optional display

board. The assembly is housed in a metal-loaded polycarbonate or Polycarbonate/ABS enclosure with anti-static

properties. A polycarbonate window is fitted to allow viewing of the liquid crystal display.

The sensor head may be mounted in the main unit, or housed in a brass or polycarbonate enclosure in a remote

location connected by up to 10 m of cable. The Group I builds use an intrinsically safe sensing head, whereas the

Group IIB builds use a previously certified flameproof sensing head.

There are four versions of the TX6383:

1 TX6383.84.01.12.240 Group I, 4 to 20 mA output

2 TX6383.84.01.11.240 Group I, 0.4 to 2 V output

3 TX6383.84.01.13.240 Group I, 5 to 15 Hz output

4 TX6383.84.02.12.240 Group IIB, 4 to 20 mA output

where 84 indicates the model has a remote sensing head, otherwise these two digits are omitted

01 indicates a Group I build

02 indicates a Group II build

11 indicates a 0.4-2 V output

12 indicates a 4-20 mA output

13 indicates a 5-15 Hz output

240 indicates that the head is intended for methane

o maximum length 10 m o maximum inductance 9 µH o maximum capacitance 2 nF o maximum L/R 20 µH/Ω

All other conditions specified in the original issue of this certificate remain unchanged.

Variations Permitted by Issue 2: Variation permitted in the Group I parameters to allow Lo/Ro up to 40 µH/Ω at the terminals T1, T2. This has been assessed for compliance in test report 29155. Conditions of Certification relating to Issue 2 of this certificate: 1. The following entity parameters for the terminals shall be taken into account for Group I installations:

Group I T4/T3 (power)

(See note 1) Ui 16.5 V Ci 0

(See note 3) Li 0 T1/T2 (sensor output signal) 4-20 mA 4-wire 0.4-2 V 5-15 Hz Ui 16.5 V 16.5 V 16.5 V Ii 200 mA 200 mA Pi 0.271 W 0.271 W Ci 0 Li 0 Uo 16.5 V (See note 2) 5.88 V 0 Io(peak) Io(continuous)

322 mA 213 mA

24 mA -

Po 1.328 W 35 mW Co 9.7 µF 9.7 µF Lo/Ro ≤40 µH/Ω ≤40 µH/Ω

Note 1: The TX6383 may be connected to supplies derived from a single power source or from two separate power

sources. Where two separate power sources are used, the power and signal supplies should be regarded as separate intrinsically safe circuits unless the combination of the sources has been assessed as non-incendive.

Note 2: The quoted Uo, Io(peak) and Po parameters are worst-case values based on a Ui value of 16.5 V. Uo has the same

value as Ui, so, if a Ui value of less than 16.5 V is used, the same lower value may be used for Uo. Io(peak) and Po are also reduced.

Note 3: There is no terminal capacitance at the supply voltage but, for system assessment purposes, the installer should

note that there is a terminal capacitance of 7.0 µF at 5.88 V with one countable fault.
