SANTA CRUZ RECORD JANUARY 10, 2017 – VOL. 46 #12 LOCAL BUSINESS STARTS HERE WWW.SANTACRUZRECORD.COM J ohn Albrecht created Good Life Ceram- ics knowing that a pinch pot had saved his life. John explains, “The short of my story is that I had been suffering with anxiety and depression for several years and found the key to my recovery in Kathryn McBride’s beginning ceramics class at Cabrillo College. After several psychiatrists, layers of medications and many other attempts for calm, it was after a ceramics class that it hit me. Walking out of the studio that day, I was broadsided by the peace I had lost and so very much wanted. No anxiety. No ruminating. No labored breath- ing. Calm. On that day I decided if I could feel that way from making a clay pot, I could certainly feel that way doing the other things in my life. It was hard and took time, but I did it. I survived.” After a discussion at a dinner party regard- ing a tray he had made. John was asked, “Where did you get that beautiful tray?” he responded, “ I made it at Cabrillo College in a beginning ceramic class. Really fun. You should do it.” With some back and forth, his friend told him that she could not take the class because she was not creative. He told her how easy the process was, but she felt that he was just much more ar- tistic than she was. At that very moment John realized that he wanted to create a space where people who feel like she did could just walk-in and make a simple tray. No lessons, no classes, no expectations, and with very little commitment of time and money. And the name of this space came to John right away. Good Life Ceramics! It had made for a good life for him, and he knew it could offer the same for others. John now knows that we are all born cre- ative. In his TED Talk, David Kelley talks about Good Life Ceramics building your creative confidence. He talks about overcoming the fear of judgment that most of us feel. Once we experience our creativity, we have more confidence in our lives. He says with this confidence, we make better decisions, consider more options, communicate better and we find comfort knowing that we are creative. Good Life Ceramics is a welcoming -make-your-own ceramic art studio. Their doors are open to all from seasoned ce- ramic artists to first-timers. With guided proj - ects for walk-ins, a fully equipped studio for members and the option to reserve the studio for private parties and corporate off- sets, individuals are able to experience the beauty of clay. And it is there that John and the staff at GLC strive to realize their mission. “To enlighten and nurture the creative con- fidence inherent in all.” For classes, hours and everything you need to know visit: www.goodlifeceramics.com

John Albrecht created Good Life Ceram-ics knowing that a pinch pot had saved his life. John explains, “The short of my

story is that I had been suffering with anxiety and depression for several years and found the key to my recovery in Kathryn McBride’s beginning ceramics class at Cabrillo College. After several psychiatrists, layers of medications and many other attempts for calm, it was after a ceramics class that it hit me. Walking out of the studio that day, I was broadsided by the peace I had lost and so very much wanted. No anxiety. No ruminating. No labored breath-ing. Calm. On that day I decided if I could feel that way from making a clay pot, I could certainly feel that way doing the other things in my life. It was hard and took time, but I did it. I survived.”

After a discussion at a dinner party regard-ing a tray he had made. John was asked,

“Where did you get that beautiful tray?” he responded, “ I made it at Cabrillo College in a beginning ceramic class. Really fun. You should do it.” With some back and forth, his friend told him that she could not take the class because she was not creative. He told

her how easy the process was, but she felt that he was just much more ar-

tistic than she was. At that very moment John realized that he wanted to create a space where people who feel like she did could just walk-in and make a simple tray. No lessons, no

classes, no expectations, and with very little commitment of time

and money. And the name of this space came to John right away. Good Life Ceramics! It had made for a good life for him, and he knew it could offer the same for others.

John now knows that we are all born cre-ative. In his TED Talk, David Kelley talks about

building your creative confidence. He talks about overcoming the fear of judgment that most of us feel. Once we experience our creativity, we have more confidence in our lives. He says with this confidence, we make better decisions, consider more options, communicate better and we find comfort knowing that we are creative.

To go.Whoever put those two de-licious words together really

knew what they were doing: order your food, ask for it “to go,” save yourself time, and eat wherever you want. You might not even have to get out of the car. Yes, “to go” are magic words but, as in the new book “Ray and Joan” by Lisa Napoli, there are still things you can’t take with you when you do. It all started with oranges. “Millions of oranges… dotted” the southern California hills in the pre-Depression years and, with newly-affordable automobiles spurring Americans to travel, broth-ers Mac and Dick McDonald saw a golden opportunity. They’d studied the way hamburger joints were run then, and they devised a better way. One of their new ideas was to hire an agent to sell franchises, which is where Ray Kroc stepped in. Born in 1902 to Bohemian immi-grants, Kroc had always possessed charisma, the gift of gab, and love for the limelight, eventually parlaying those strengths into a sales job that took him around the country. When he discovered what the brothers Mc-Donald were doing, Kroc knew he’d

seen the future and he persuaded them to hire him. Though financing was never quite secure in those early years, it wasn’t long before McDon-

ald’s restaurants were seemingly every-where.And so, of course, was Ray Kroc. Part of his job was to approve new “store” openings and it was on one such trip that he met Joan Smith, who was playing piano in an up-

scale Minneapolis lounge. Though both were wed to

someone else, they were smitten with one another; he asked her twice to marry him and she finally did.But blissful happiness wasn’t to be. Kroc was volatile, and drank too much, while Joan was bored with merely being a billionaire’s wife, and she restlessly searched for proj-ects. When Kroc died in 1984, she mourned, then seized her chance – but not in any conventional way.Says Napoli, “She wanted to make a difference, but serving on a corporate board, on any board, wasn’t what she had in mind.”Have you ever become so captivated by a story that you felt unmoored

when it ended? Yep, I could have read “Ray & Joan” all day.Yet, undoubtedly, as author Lisa Napoli indicates in her book, if Joan Kroc had had her way, we wouldn’t know the rest of the story. Kroc, says Napoli, wanted her philanthropic ac-tions to be anonymous, even though she enigmatically left plenty of clues. Between tales of both Krocs and their contemporaries, Napoli follows those hints to leave readers wonder-ing what we don’t know. This bit of mystery, inadvertent as it might have been originally, feels like the plot of a book of intrigue, and serves to leave readers hungry for the next page, and the next…This book will likely be found in the business section of bookstore or library, but it’s really so much more. “Ray & Joan” has shades of history, pop-culture, biography, and finance inside – and doesn’t that sound delicious? n

Our Most Important Marketing Tips of 2016SlIngShOT TO SucceSS

by Bryce Root

It’s that time of year where you begin seeing the “Top” lists reviewing the best of what transpired

in 2016, so we thought it would be useful if we compiled all our top tips that we’ve shared with the small business community throughout 2016. Sit back, unplug and let your mind begin to wan-der through all the possibilities you’ll have at your fingertips in 2017.

Customer Experience Audit1. Call your business to see how your employ-

ees answer the phone with specific, popular and unpopular questions your customers typically ask.

2. Ensure all your social media alerts and push notifications are activated so you can imme-diately respond to customer inquiries.

Strategic Partnerships

1. Perform due diligence with potential part-ners prior to reaching out to them.

2. Take baby steps with your first collaboration, and document via email who is responsible for tasks, and communicate regularly.

Social Media1. You’re already busy, so use your phone’s

camera to capture everything you do by tak-ing people behind the scenes. Demonstrate how things are made, chosen and sourced.

2. Utilize as much video as you can and be-come creative with your photos.

PR1. Align your news to regional or national

trends and headlines to localize your news so reporters become interested.

2. Think Twitter for your headlines as they need to be concise, catchy and “WOW” re-porters and consumers who are bombarded by email and social media.

Events1. Be sure to post your events to cruzcal.org,

santacruz.com, santacruzsentinel.com, cre-ate a Facebook event, patch.com, ksbw.com, myscottsvalley.com, and tpgonlinedaily.com.

2. Always create a unique angle, activity, or el-ement to your event that differentiates your events from the multitude of other seasonal events.

Advertising1. Always determine whether the publication

you’re curious about advertising with, actu-ally reaches your target market and take time to ask customers about what their favorite websites, magazines and news resources are.

2. If you determine that the stars are aligned and the advertising opportunity is spot on perfect, make sure you always ask for added value for having chosen to advertise with them.

3. If you take the publication up on creating your ad for you, begin by giving them your precise fonts, colors and format that your ads typically follow so your ad will follow the branding of your previous marketing communications.

Email1. Monitor who is clicking on which links in

your eblasts and follow up with those peo-ple to see how you can help them further in that particular area of service or product line.

2. Spend a lot of time on the subject line of your email and don’t send it until you cre-ate one that you’re 100% sure your target customer would open because they simply can’t resist.

1%1. Always treat your top 1% of loyal customers

like royalty to create amazing word of mouth.2. Create unique experiences that blow them

away and they can’t resist telling all their friends about.

3. Give them VIP access to your events, give them unique perks, and/or create oppor-tunities where they get to experience be-hind the scenes access, and document it via video or photos. n

Event Santa CruzNearly three years ago, Matthew

Swinnerton started Event Santa Cruz to showcase the amazing entre-preneurs in Santa Cruz and, at the same time, create an event for people to network, listen to live local music, drink a beer or two and have a great time.

Event Santa Cruz has flourished and is now “the” monthly event for local business owners and entrepreneurs.

Every month, over 200 entrepreneurs and other engaged Santa Cruz resi-dents attend Event Santa Cruz to listen to short talks by local business owners. There is a different theme each month:

from photography to beer, to PopUp food to non-starving artist, Event Santa Cruz is not your run-of-the-mill network-ing event.

Next month, Event Santa Cruz is try-ing something different. On June 8 at 6

p.m. at the Rio, in partnership with Visit Santa Cruz County, “This is How We Cruz!” will be an epic extravaganza cel-ebrating the local people, places, projects and busi-

nesses that make Santa Cruz County such an awesome place to be.

For more info on Event Santa Cruz, visit EventSantaCruz.com or www.facebook.com/EventSantaCruz.

1. Was there an event or moment in your life when you decided you wanted to own your own business?I don’t think there was a moment in particular. I liked the idea of having my own salon from the day I started beauty school at 16, but it gradually became a more realistic dream with time and experience.

2. What’s the biggest business mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?Paying for expensive print ads. Focus-ing on creating an awesome customer experience in the salon and online would have been a far more effective way to get new people in the door.

3. What advice would you offer an entrepreneur just starting a business?Find a mentor, or several. Never stop learning; take classes, read books. Try and prioritize self care once you get past the initial crazi-ness of when you first open. Know that your only competition is your-self. Always try and create a better

experience for your customer and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing. You’ll be busier than you can handle. I promise!

4. When you were younger, what was the first thing you bought with your own money? The first big purchase I remem-ber making that felt like a really big deal was getting my younger brother a gaming system for Christ-mas. I grew up very poor and always dreamed about being able to do those types of things for my family and friends. The people I love have always been my motiva-tion to be successful.

5. What do you do outside of work that helps you deal with the day to day stress of owning a business? So many things! I have an amazing husband who is my biggest support system. I spend time with friends. I do chair yoga and meditation. I go to therapy (which I personally think everyone should do). I get a mas-

Ready. Set. Glow.

Treat yourself to an afternoon of ho-listic rejuvenation. Glow & Grace

Collective presents its first holistic facial rejuvenation social event on Saturday, May 21 from 1:30 to 4:40 pm. Located at Ancient Waves Wellness, their new clinic overlooks the beautiful Santa Cruz Harbor. Lauren, Anna and Deva are experts in the field of holistic anti-aging and skin care. They will be offering mini treatments that combine ancient time tested techniques with new and inno-vative skin care advancements. This free social will also include demon-strations, skin enhancing herbal tonics, facial product sam-pling, free gifts and more! Lauren Moser, Anna Surber and Deva Cassandra, the owners of Glow & Grace Col-lective, all graduated with a Mas-ters degree in Traditional Chinese Med-icine from Five Branches University in Santa Cruz. With a mutual love for the combination of Chinese Medicine and Skin Care, they decided to join forces and form Glow & Grace Collective.

Lauren Moser, both a licensed acu-puncturist and licensed esthetician, fell in love with skin care at an early age as both her mother and grandmother

were estheticians. Wanting to deepen and expand her scope of practice, she moved to Santa Cruz from Maui in 2008

to study Chinese Medicine with the goal of combining her love of

both practices.

Deva Cassandra, originally from Mt. Shasta Califor-

nia, came to study at Five Branches University in order to

deepen her knowledge and ability as an professional herbalist. She is pas-sionate about incorporating herbalism and acupuncture into modern skin care practices to cultivate beauty and balance within and without.

Anna Surber, L. Ac., grew up in west-ern Nevada and attended the Univer-sity of Nevada-Reno on an academic scholarship. Her interest in healing and

promoting healthy self esteem lead her to enroll as a graduate student at Five Branches University in Santa Cruz, California. Through her education she found she was most interested in treat-ing the skin to help her clients feel beau-tiful and confident. For more informa-tion visit www.glowandgrace.com

Cruz Viewsfive minutes with: Mike Pitt

1. Was there an event or moment in your life when you decided you wanted to own your own business? What was it?Not exactly. I was planning on doing corporate law and working for a big company. That changed when I started working for O’Neill as an in-dependent sales representative right out of college. It was probably the perfect career for me in that it was an industry I was already credible in and I was able to manage my own program even though ultimately, I had bosses. After about 10 years, I started to look for a new challenge and on a whim, purchased my first small business. That was Castaways, a neighborhood bar in Pleasure Point. The plan was always to keep my “career” and have the other business on the side but by the time I was starting my third “side business”, the new direc-tion was pretty clear. I gave up working for O’Neill after 17 years as a sales rep to focus solely on my businesses.

2. What advice would you offer an entrepreneur just starting a business?Be flexible/adaptive. You en-counter so many unforeseen obstacles with all the variables starting a business, it is im-portant to be able to navigate them without being too set on a specific course. There usually isn’t just one way to accomplish your goals, there are many. That path tends to evolve along the way.

3. What’s the biggest business mistake you’ve made and what did you learn from it?Underestimating the complexity of it all. What seems to be fairly straight forward in theory tends to always be more difficult in execution. There are so many moving parts that align-ing them all the way you want is of-ten easier imagined than in practice.

4. What do you do outside of work that helps you deal with the day to day stress of owning a business?Surfing has been my sport and ther-apy of choice since I was 11 years old. It’s so ingrained in my life that I rarely even think about it, I just do it. However, I fully recognize it’s signifi-cance to me and how it helps balance

my entrepreneurial side. Surfing has definitely taught me to be patient. Through surfing I’ve learned to ac-cept the things I can’t change and not to give up on the things I care about

and can change.

5. When you were younger, what was the first thing you bought with your own money?Candy? Haha. I have no idea. We didn’t have much money growing up so I tended to use more creative means to attain the things I really wanted. From a very young age, barter-ing and salesmanship were my tools. When I really wanted my first surfboard, I traded a Walk-Man I got at the flea market for a bike that was then traded for the surfboard. I re-member making that happen. Before that, I’d just show up at home with new items and my mom would have to ask how I got them. n
