Moving to the Santa Cruz Mountains in 1987 to build his family busi-

ness, Byington Winery; David Brissen-den quickly found solace in the Redwoods. While working under the chefs at the winery during breaks from College in Humboldt, he realized his heart was in the culinary field. David has been a chef for 25 years now, channeling his creativity and working within some of the largest Catering companies and high-end restaurants in the Bay Area. While doing grassroots work for

Prop 215 under Ben Rice in ’95-’96, Da-vid realized the importance of taking a stand with the Cannabis plant. How-

ever, it wasn’t until 2015 that he expe-rienced for himself, the therapeutic effects of Cannabis. It transformed the focus of his life, and quickly turned his passion for cooking, chemistry and cannabis into Cosmo D’s Outrageous Edibles.

David creates arti-sanal chocolate bars with the same care and technique as his restau-rant desserts, which lead Cosmo D’s to win Best Edible and Best Dessert at Hempcon 2017.

Now, working on his new Summer menu with a Toffee-Snickerdoodle Rice Krispy treat and a few other sur-prises; Cosmo D’s is ready to show the edible market that ‘Delicious’ can be a part of the conversation. 831-325-9191. www.cosmosedibles.com.

Claim the most important online directory listings for your small business in 2017

SlInGSHoT To SuCCESS

by Andy Van Valer

Small business owners use to worry about plac-ing the right address and phone number in the

phone book. Today, there are so many online di-rectories it can be hard to keep up.

Develop a strategy for claiming and updating a few of the most important online business list-ings for your company. So which directories are worth your time and attention? Here are five big ones you’ll want to start with.

• Google My Business: The search engine giant has a listing service directed at small business owners like you. Start by claiming or adding your business to Google My Busi-ness. From there, your business location, contact information and services will appear across Google+, Google Maps and gain trac-tion in the search engine’s results..

• MapQuest: It may be a surprise, but the geo-mapping service we all use so fre-

quently offers a listing service for busi-nesses, allowing customers to find you while on the road and in your area. A basic listing on MapQuest will include your business name, address, phone num-ber, website, several business categories and your longitude and latitude. To list your small business, you’ll need to email MapQuest’s support team by first visiting help.mapquest.com.

• Bing Place for Business: It’s a good idea to make sure that your business has claimed its listing on all three major search engines. That includes Microsoft’s search engine, Bing. Bing Places for Business allows owners to claim their listing or add their company details. Simply visit bingplaces.com and walk through the steps.

• Yelp: Yelp gets a bad rep among small busi-ness owners because of unfair—even bi-ased—reviews and customer rants. But there is value in Yelp’s business listings. Visit biz.

yelp.com to claim or add your business. Once claimed, however, be prepared to spend time monitoring your company page and addressing any dissatisfaction among your customers.

• YP.com: Yellow Pages kept up with the dig-ital revolution by building YP.com. You can claim your business page by entering your business info. Many consumers still consider the Yellow Pages their go-to resource for looking up businesses, making this a great business directory to be on.

If you don’t have time to keep up with these five directories—and dozens of others—there are services that can help. n

Andy Van Valer, CEO Slingshot, is an organiza-tion that helps entrepreneurs get the support, re-sources and advice they’ll need to make their busi-ness idea a reality or to scale to the next level. For more information visit www.slingshotsv.com.

Here. Try this.Take a sip. Give it a whirl. Do a

taste-test. A preliminary trial, it won’t take long. Here, see what you think. We’re asked to sample things every day, from products to ideas but, as in the new book, “Valley of the Gods” by Alexandra Wolfe, is every-thing worth a try?College costs money. For millions of high school grads, that’s a fact of which they don’t need reminding. It’ll cost most of them a lot, and for years to come – unless they’ve got a better plan, such as Pay-Pal cofounder Peter Thiel’s “20 Under 20.”Alexandra Wolfe was friends with Thiel before she learned about his program, then offering twenty young adults, all under twenty years old, a whopping $100,000 to “stop out” of college. Take a gap year or don’t go at all, Thiel said. Instead, come to Silicon Valley, create a start-up, work your revolutionary idea, and change the world.Prior to 1971, there was no “Silicon Valley,” says Wolfe; only after the many silicon chip manufacturers moved in did the area get its moniker. Today, the largest industries all have “massive bases there” and it’s “one of the biggest

concentrations of billionaires in the world.” It’s a place where failure is suc-cess, and success is stratospheric. In 2009, by invitation from Thiel, the pro- gram was launched

and twenty new high school graduates came to this frantic-for-the-next-big-th-ing business com-munity with their near-genius ideas: John Burnham, who wanted to explore aster-oid mining. Laura Deming, believer in immortality.

James Proud, app builder. John Marbach, who hoped

to revolutionize education. As Wolfe learned while following them, Silicon Valley “tech giants” wanted workers who were “self-taught,” and Thiel’s 2009 group was the very essence of that. Still, the program wasn’t the fast-track to riches every-one hoped: many of The Twenty lived in dorm-like buildings, obsessing about coding and aimlessly part-time-job-hopping with little-to-no distinc-tion between work and life. Their eyes were opened to polyamorous lifestyles, social isolation, and gender inequality. For them, “Climbing corporate rungs was so ten years ago,” says Wolfe. But particularly when you’re “Under 20”

and trying your wings, dreams die hard. It’s quite easy to trot out the old You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry cliché, but it’s true in “Valley of the Gods.” You’ll also get confused an awful lot.The good news is that author Alexan-dra Wolfe delves into a world that few have seen up-close: her book takes place in hallowed businesses that many of us only know by their online pres-ences, and it’s an eye-opening look. And yet – while reading about this one elite group of would-be entrepreneurs and the extraordinary lengths that those tech companies go to woo them, there’s a lot to digest and it often comes at a breathless, almost relentless, name-dropping pace. Ctrl-alt-delete.Less of that and more about the Twenty, perhaps, would’ve been nice but I still liked this book. If you want a good peek into tech businesses and, possibly, the future, find “Valley of the Gods” and give it a try. n
